Are there any books that you would not recommend? If so,why?

E_Lin -> RE: Books You Wouldn't Recommend (4/8/2009 11:00:39 PM)

"The Steel Remains" by Richard K. Morgan.

I had previously read all of his other books, and found them to be top notch science fiction. They all dealt in some way with dark twists in humanity's future, whether in the corporate setting or genetic manipulation, highlighting society's tendency towards self destruction and the good / bad sides of human nature.

This latest novel from him, however, is an entirely different story. Literally.

In "The Steel Remains", Morgan goes the route of a middle ages type fantasy setting. Right off the bat we are introduced to the main character, who we are vaguely introduced as a heroic warrior from some past war or conflict. Oh, and by the way, he is not only gay, but prefers younger teenage boys.

Wait - it gets better...

Apparently it seems that nearly every character introduced into the story is some kind of sexual deviant, with preferences that range from young girls and boys all the way to torture rape fetishes (that one was a shaman priest).

Now, ... I am a very tolerant person. There is a lot that I can stand when it comes to movies, books and art. But there are some things I just don't think need to be put into a story. And believe me, you don't want to know about the things that eventually made me stop reading the book (worse than what I have already listed above). Not to mention the fact that I got over 160 pages into it, and I still had no idea of where the story was going, other than I was probably going to find another kind of perversion on the next page.

Bottom line, you can read anything else written by Richard K. Morgan, as they are terrific novels. But "The Steel Remains"? I don't know what he was thinking. Don't even pick it up. It is a waste of paper and library shelf space.

The Tommyknockers, by Stephen King. I'm a huge King fan, but this one bored me to tears. Took 1,000 pages to tell a 500 page story.
Anything else by him, though, I'd say go for it. ...Well, there's still five or six books of his I haven't read, so I can't say anything, but so far I've enjoyed them all.

The Shack

Auben -> RE: Books You Wouldn't Recommend (4/9/2009 11:22:05 AM)

So true Mr. Fribbles. I think he refers to those as those as his 'just living through alcoholism' novels. Cujo is another one.

There are probably a lot of novels I would not recommend. Some I like but I don't think they're for everyone. The trouble is remembering what they are and being fair to novels I never finished.

Hannibal
She's Come Undone (did not finish)
Looking Backward
The Bridges of Madison County
Scarlett: the sequel to GWTW
The Horse Whisperer (although I didn't mind the movie)
The Natural (ditto)
Shoeless Joe
The Messenger or Gathering Blue
2061
The Night of the Iguana
The True History of the Elephant Man
The Man Who Women Loved
How to Make the World a Better Place
The Road to Wellville
Love Story
Gap Creek
The Island of Dr. Moreau
Geishas in Rivalry
Always Coming Home
A Year by the Sea
The Island of the Day Before
The Italian Secretary

and oh, so many, many more.

The Shack. It has really screwy theology in it.

Me too.

The DaVinci Code is another.

While I was reading this book, I was enjoying it thoroughly. The twists and turns, keeping me wondering what will happen next, were quite entertaining. Nevermind the questionable theological content. That doesn't bother me, as I know what I believe.

However, the book lost me at the end. For the entire novel, we are subjected to the hints and implications that there is this great secret that threatens what we believe about Jesus and Christianity. And it is further implied that there is physical proof to back it up.

Yet, at the end of the book, we discover... nothing. Nothing but a smile and a wink, to suggest that the secret is even to big to reveal to the readers of fiction. To me, that was a cop out. It's like going to a fireworks display, expecting to see magnificent explosions. But instead, all you get are fizzled out fuses, and a condescending Fire Marshall telling you that it's better that you don't really see such a thing. THEN WHY DID YOU TELL ME TO COME AND SEE THE FIREWORKS??? Or in other words, why did you write a book you didn't intend to have an ending???

Sammy_S -> RE: Books You Wouldn't Recommend (4/20/2009 1:27:17 AM)

Hmm Any book by:

Benny Hinn
TD Jakes

That's the best part! It still leaves you wanting. [8D]

I would have to say the Eragon series....BIG yawn.

It was an end-of-the-world zombie book...forgot the name of it.

Se answer to No. 1. It was bad, even for a vacation read.

Christfan18 -> RE: Books You Wouldn't Recommend (4/26/2009 4:19:16 PM)

Small_creation, was it World War Z?

EmmaC -> RE: Books You Wouldn't Recommend (4/29/2009 5:05:59 PM)

I wouldnt recommend Jane Green's books, i picked them up just for some light beach reading but shes just a bad writer and its really hard to get invested in the characters...

jazzact13 -> RE: Books You Wouldn't Recommend (4/30/2009 10:12:22 AM)

Anything emergent, from authors such as Brian McLaren, Rob Bell, Tony Jones, and that lot.

Auben -> RE: Books You Wouldn't Recommend (4/30/2009 10:47:06 AM)

A Year by the Sea by Joan Anderson

Smug non-fiction about a woman separating from her husband of 30 years to 'find herself.' Frankly, I could deal with that if what she found wasn't so boring and shallow. I didn't feel for her much and it was excruciating to read each little detail of her new life as if it should matter to me.

The things you read to be in a book club.

The Jesus Incident, by science fiction writer Frank Herbert. Defiling, pornographic, one of the few books I purchased, then tossed into the garbage.

Gail7364 -> RE: Books You Wouldn't Recommend (5/1/2009 6:56:38 PM)

Sammy_S - Obviously you do not like books written by ministers. Have you read any of their books or just making an overall judgment?

What about Charles Stanley? Anne Graham Lotz? Billy Graham? If you haven't read their books, you are missing some great reading, IMO.

Just wondering......

Miss Giggles -> RE: Books You Wouldn't Recommend (5/1/2009 6:59:08 PM)

I started to read a hundred years of solitude and it lost me in the first few chapters.

No Gail, those authors he mentioned are advocating flipped out theology which is running rampant in these church these days and passed as gospel. People like Greg Laurie, Anne Graham Lotz and Billy Graham is bibically based and they are good authors.

I'm sure he is endorcing those writers instead of those authors and others who are promoting whacked out theology.

Prairiehiker -> RE: Books You Wouldn't Recommend (5/4/2009 11:59:43 PM)

The Shack

Conversations with God

and I agree about not recommending anything from Joel and Victoria Osteen.

I'm still on the fence about Rob Bell and the emergent guys. I read Blue Like Jazz and I actually liked it.

John Eldredge's books are weak in theology. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone though most of his books are in my library because I actually understand him.

The Left Behind series -- rotten and defeatist fantasies. Corrosive to Christian hope, optimism, energy, and long-term projects.

The Late Great Planet Earth -- see above.

Not to mention those books are also very poorly written.

Oh I agree here. I also would not recommend Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert or any book in the same vein for the same reason. I can't stand all of the neurotic women finding themselves books. [:'(]

Auben -> RE: Books You Wouldn't Recommend (5/6/2009 11:39:05 AM)

Heh. I read The Late Great Planet Earth. I was in 9th grade.

Maybe that's why I avoided Left Behind?

Left Behind Series - Cheesy? Yes. Entertaining? Absolutely. (I must confess though... I only read the LAST book of the series - Yes... I'm bad [8D])

Late Great Planet Earth - Which printing? Still, it's a good read if you like prophecy.
