Many of these "necessities" are claimed to be able to "save lives." I'm not sure I'm down with that line of reasoning, but I'm trying to decide if it needs its own thread.

I think the responses would still be much the same. People are going to answer based on their individual circumstances or those of the people they know and love.

Some people are the type who "get" that and others are, as my mama says, so "set in their ways" that they will continue to insist that "If it ain't a necessity for me, it ain't a necessity for anyone"

Well, I could see how some of those things could save someone's life. For example, if someone got hurt far awhile from a hospital, a car would be a lifesaver in that instance. But does that make a car a necessity? Maybe at that particular time and place. On the other hand, what if someone's life was saved because they had a gun, and were able to shoot someone who was about to kill them? Does that make guns a necessity? When you think about it, there are a lot of things that could potentially be a lifesaver in the right time and place that may not be a necessity. Or what if something else could have substituted for the lifesaver and had the same results? Which potential lifesaver becomes the necessity? Or maybe what is needed is not a particular item, but something more general such as "a weapon" or "a mode of transportation" or "some way to stay cool."

That makes a lot of sense Lisa.

Think about "simpler times" say..Little House on the Prairie No cars, but would anyone suggest that it wasn't a necessity to have at least a horse? Some way to get to a source of supplies and bring them back to the family?

Is it really that different today? Yes, we could quit our jobs ( no more need for a computer) and move on a bus line ( no more need for a car). However, pioneers like good ole Pa Ingalls could have just stayed in the eastern cities and never settled the West too.

At some point ( and I contend it is a different point for different people) some "extras" do become necessities.

Some things aren't essential until they are!

I guess I think of it like this: If I were in BK or something, where some outside party was making me justify every penny I spent, which of the items on the list would be approved?

That is how I view "necessity."

And none of those items are necessities in that sense.

I have all of the items on the list (including a dishwasher which has been used exactly four times in the past seven years--I need to run that thing just to make sure its innards are still good ), but I would have a very hard time justifying them as necessities. They are conveniences, and I like them a lot, but I cannot honestly say any of them are necessities.

W.O.F. is right about the false sense of security, though. We drive to my Dd's house and always lose cell phone service at a certain place and then get it back 12 miles down the road.

You'd also have a butter churn, plow, fireplace, saw, axe, etc. on the list of things that would be essential.

What do you mean by BK? I keep thinking Burger King, but I'm not sure that's what you meant.

Sometimes I wish most of them didn't exist. There would be a lot more cohesion in families without some of those things such as tv, dishwasher, microwave, cell phones, etc.

Most of them can be a plus or minus though depending on if it is used wisely. I would hate to be without my car and computer..the rest wouldn't matter too much.

If I could choose only 1 it would have to be air conditioning.

If I could choose only one . . .

Lessee, going down the list . . . I don't need an AC where I live (and many houses don't even have them).

I don't own (or use) a t.v., nor an iPod, nor a car.

That leaves clothes dryer, microwave, dishwasher, high speed internet, home computer, cell phone.

I don't own a microwave, dishwasher nor clothes dryer neither (and my highspeed internet is included in my rent) - but I do have access to and use all of those items.

If I could choose only one item . . . it would have to be my laptop computer. I rely on it for my business. I rely on the internet as well, but I could easily find a hot spot somewhere and contain my online activity within a certain time period. The cell phone would be nice (especially since I don't have a landline), but it wouldn't be a necessity; some of my clients send me emails when they want me to schedule them on my calendar; and those that don't, would be able to work around that if I was at a certain hot spot every day during a specific time frame.

I was getting stumped trying to figure out what necessities were at Burger King.

I'd have to agree with that.

And if you have a car your access to some of the others is much easier..library for internet, laundry mat, fast food instead of microwave

Now if we have to chose only one to use not just own...hmmm, I think I still have to go with the car.
