I have not paid attention to ratings since seeing THIS MOVIE or something of its ilk, and its lame attempt to get an R rating to improve viewership. In it, a well dressed man comes along and cites the criteria for an R rating. Then he says, "Since this motiion picture contains none of these, the makers of this film have asked me to say ...." followed by a foul expletive. It was then that I learned that R ratings make more money, and filmmakers will throw things into their films that can be easily ignored, and don't harm the quality of the film overall. The Passion of the Christ is a good example of an R rating not making a movie offensive.

I avoid movies with nudity and sex, as I do not wish to subject myself to a temptation in that area in any way. Violence and language do not tempt me to sin, and unless they are very graphic, mostly don't bother me either. So I have gone to see Terminator Salvation, but I would not go see 300.

ORIGINAL: Consecrated2God I've seen one R rated movie, and that was "The Passion of the Christ." We generally stick to PG and G rated movies. Most of the movies I've seen that are rated PG-13 I felt were full of things that were not God-honoring, and I like to keep a clean conscience. I tend to follow the same guidelines, I have watched about three 'R' rated movies over the last couple of decades. All were movies with important themes one being the passion of Christ, and the other two dealing with the holocaust. All were movies I took my older children to see. As a rule we don't watch "R" rated movies and are careful with the other movies we watch. If a movie has too much "smut" in it for my children, then it isn't one I will watch either. I personally cringe when people tell me that "I can watch it because I'm an "adult""; if it is not God honoring for a teen, then it is not honoring for an adult.

I watch and own several R movies. I try to avoid those with sex and nudity, but fail sometimes. Most of the movies I own are of historical significance and are biographical. I love westerns, war and action movies. Sci Fi movies I like, but not horror movies. Horror movies are mostly rated R as well as movies aimed at teen audiences like Road Trip, Euro Trip, Good Luck Chuck and are just plain dumb and silly not to mention contains graphic sex and nudity. My son saw Watchmen at the invitation of a friend who got him in for free. He was so dissapointed because he said there was a lot of violence and graphic sex that didn't need to be in there. Crosswalk.com has a great review department that I rely on 99% of the time when deciding if I want to see a particular movie.

Other than "The Passion of the Christ," the only R-rated movie that I can recall being a good movie was "The Ghost and The Darkness." Val Kilmer and Michael Douglass starred in it, "a 1996 thriller about the Tsavo maneaters, two lions who attacked the builders of the Uganda-Mombasa Railway in 1898, killing about 135 of them, and the subsequent hunt to kill them. The attacks, which took place in Tsavo, Kenya, were recounted by Lieutenant Colonel John Henry Patterson in his book The Man-Eaters of Tsavo." (Description obtained from Wikipedia) To me, it was no more violent and bloody than a Discovery Channel or Animal Planet documentary on lions in the wild. But when I told a former Youth Pastor and his wife about the movie, they both went ballistic! "What are you doing watching an R-movie in the first place?!" I gave them the same explanation I just gave y'all, but they were still skeptical. I even offered to let them borrow my DVD to see it when their children weren't around - they passed. As I said, though, I don't watch R films . . . until they come on TV in an edited form. And then it's only a 'maybe' as to whether I do or not. Duane

I would say that promoting sin would be a movie that shows sinful behavior as good or that doing something wrong led to a good outcome or glorifying sinful lifestyles.

If we are going to be really technical about it, we could say that just about any movie ever made is contrary to God's will, and unworthy for Christian eyes. Movies like "Tron", "The Princess Bride", "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, and "Finding Nemo" display such qualities as the use of witchcraft, and personal accomplishment to the glory of self instead of God. How is God glorified by "secular" movies? The answer is He is not. Yet do those movies promote sin? It can be argued that indeed they do because they often demonstrate that we can accomplish anything we put our mind to without having to rely on God, or give thanks for His help. Which in turn can lead to the mindset that God is not necessary for anything we deal with in life. Which is where much of the secular world is today. And if God is not part of anyone's everyday considerations, then why worry about sin? If there is no God, then there is no sin, and nothing to worry about. I am reminded of a song from the early 1990's, which had the lyrics: -Temptation, is a part of life -It doesn't matter if it's wrong or right -It makes you do what you like So I (and others) believe it is a matter of what the individual can tolerate without being led to sin. In scripture it says God does not allow us to be tempted beyond what He knows we can handle. Now, certainly we can allow ourselves to be tempted past that point, but it does acknowledge that some of use can handle more than others of us. I can go to an art museum see a portrait of an attractive, naked woman, and appreciate the beauty of the picture. The quality of the brushstrokes and perspective of the artist. How the light and shadows are captured to make it look so lifelike. But there are others who will look at the same piece of art and start having inappropriate fantasies. Does that make the art bad? Does that mean that the artist's intent was to cause people to sin? I will not be naive enough to suggest that Hollywood producers and directors do not include scenes in movies that are designed to tittilate and pander to man's desire to things that sinful (lust, violence, etc.). I will just point out that there are those of us who can handle watching such things without falling away, and can even use such things as ministry opportunities.

I personally cringe when people tell me that "I can watch it because I'm an "adult""; if it is not God honoring for a teen, then it is not honoring for an adult. I hear you. When my kids were really little and stuff went over their heads, I didn't think much of it, but as they are growing older the excuse of "I'm an adult" didn't fly with me anymore. I found that there wasn't an honest way to answer the "why can't I watch it?" question. "No, honey, there's bad stuff in this movie, and God doesn't want you to watch bad stuff because you are under eighteen. But when you are an adult, you can watch bad stuff like I do." I realized that God's commands to think on things that are pure and holy and a good report didn't have an age limit to it. You don't grow out of the need to feed your mind on things that honor God. So I don't watch them. And the quality of my life hasn't suffered in the least. You know, this post made me think a little as to the choices of movies I watch and I realised what the difference is between what you do, (which is to not justify your movie watching just because you're an adult) and what I do. There are a lot of "grown up" movies that I don't have the boys watch. The majority of the reason is because they would be sooo bored by it. I went to a friends house and he had "Michael Clayton" on DVD and we decided to watch it since the boys weren't there. I felt good watching a "grown up" movie for the first time in forever. Then about 20 minutes into my friend and were bored and watched Night at the Museum. My boys have been gone for the past week and so I rented movies on NetFlix that I have wanted to watch that they wouldn't care to miss. You made a very good point, Lisa and it made me realise that I have made an unconscious effort to do what you already do.

I watch R Rated movies. I've never understood the "i'm not gonna watch this movie it's got bad words in it" thing. I hear those same words all the time in real life - sometimes from the same people that get freaked out about movies using those words. Now, if a movie uses the same word over and over to the point of the word being officially butchered to death, yeah that's stupid. (like Role Model's and their use of the F-word every 10 seconds). And as for violence and everything else, well..to me it's just a movie. It's fiction. (heck, even if it's based on a true story it's still mostly fiction ;) )

I think it's a bit simplistic to just say that if something is inappropriate for a child, it's also inappropriate for an adult. There are plenty of situations, deeds, or words whose use could be morally acceptable in one context and unacceptable in another. It depends on how the matter is handled within the movie. People being shot in Saving Private Ryan is different from people being shot in Natural Born Killers. Jesus being tortured in The Passion is different from people being tortured in Saw. A naked woman in a medical documentary is different from a naked woman in a soft-core porn. Children don't necessarily have the maturity and wisdom to be able to discern the difference. I think our definition of what's "pure and holy and of good report" should be set by more than just a counter of the number of swear words or acts of violence or naked bits. It should also account for the context in which those elements are used. -Dan.

ORIGINAL: heathjack I got two or three mostly cussing. i think some pg 13 moives should be rated even some pg should be ratedr. do any one watches rated r moives? I don't watch r rated movies anymore, with a rare exception. I think the content of the movie matters just as much as the rating though. Just because a movie is clean with no cursing or nudity, doesn't mean it's message is good. There is more to look at than just a rating. Like if it is a war movie, we know they almost always have a r rating due to the blood. Those I may watch. But if is sex laden, curse riddled, or promotes a lifestyle I am not in agreement with, I won't watch it. I actually got rid of most of the movies I had. Try to only watch movies I could sit down next to Jesus and watch. I know most of you all don't feel that way, but If I can't watch it with Him, I probably won't watch it.

I have taken my older kids to see movies like the Passion because I felt the subject matter warranted the violence that was part of the movie and because these are subjects that I believe are important for my older children to understand. The point was that "being an adult" is not a valid reason by itself for a Christian to choose to watch a movie. If there is a reason you are choosing to watch a movie that you wouldn't allow your teenager to watch then the question you should be asking yourself is "Why?" Or to put it another way, if you would not watch this movie with Jesus sitting at your side (and he really is), then you shouldn't be watching it at all.

That movie I liked also, though I haven't watched it unless it was on tv in the past few years, or since I have been saved. Yes there is a lot of cursing. I look at it this way....we are supposed to be renewing our minds by the Word of God, but if we keep voluntarily listening or watching things that will conflict with what the Word is teaching us, aren't we then negating much of what God is trying to do in our lives. If we are told to have no part in foul language and lewd jokes, yet watch movies that have those things in them, isn't that then disobedience? Just my thoughts on the topic. We can't control what we hear all the time, but if we have that ability to do so by watching certain things, shouldn't we take advantage of that?

I do not like the MPAA ratings system, as it is too blunt and approximate to really tell me what is going on in it. I much prefer http://www.kids-in-mind.com/ for their ratings which seperate out sex/nudity, violence/gore and profanity - giving a 1-10 rating for each. On the website they then list out what gave it that rating. Examples: Imagine That - 1.2.4 (sex - 1 very little; violence - 2 low; profanity - 4 moderate) for the latter they have this: PROFANITY 4 - 3 scatological terms, 12 mild scatological terms, 3 mild anatomical terms, 1 mild obscenity, name-calling (idiot, "Wakupida is a stupida," big dumb show-off, stinky, fool, liar, crybaby), exclamations (jeez, bull, zip it), 5 religious exclamations. Very helpful.

I do. And this R rated film comes out on Friday, which I will likely see. http://www.thestoning.com/ I'm on the email list of a Christian guy who works in Hollywood and he says quote:
I have seen it, and it is a powerful testimony of truth in a world of lies. Great story, great acting and great writing. It is based on a true story that occured after the Iranian Revolution of the late 70s. It shows the evil reality of Islamic Sharia Law as it is applied unjustly against women. It is not for the squeamish, but it is necessary, just as "Schindler's List" was necessary to see.

You all need to think about this from an engineering perspective. You go into a darkened room and sit in a reclining seat in front of a 20 + foot screen with a state of the art projector and audio system. When you go to a movie, you are taking an advanced class on a given topic that will be bored into your brain dramatic visual and audio images and even now in digital 3D. What you are doing is teaching yourself how to respond to a given life circumstance for 2 hours. You are literally laying down new or reinforcing old neural pathways in your brain. This is a fact. When it comes to the term entertainment and movies, the more appropriate term is programming. An no, I don't mean brain washing, but you are literally programming your brain. This is simple physics. I think Psalm 1 says a lot: Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper. Matt 5:8 Says: Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God. How does one keep their heart pure? By being careful about what you put into it. When you go to movies, you are putting content into your heart. That's a fact. I have found that the more you keep your heart pure, the more you get to experience the supernatural/sensual side of your relationship with God. Gal 5:22 says: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, The other day, I think I had the opportunity to experience Joy for the first time for about two days. It was way cool. If I had to say what it felt like would be sex, expect a different flavor. And it just vanished liked a popped balloon when I sinned.
