Yes I am an adult.

It depends on the subject matter.

I don't even pay attention to ratings. If I think it looks like a good movie, I'll watch it.

Yep. As an adult, I am perfectly capable of judging the context in which a particular action is portrayed. The number of times somebody swears, or shows a nipple, or says "jesus" is grossly insufficient as a criteria for judging the quality or "worthiness" of art (including film and music).

I'm an adult and watch them. I have also let my children watch a few as well. I'm very particular as to which ones the do, but it's with much discussion.

tafkam -> RE: does any one watches rated r moiveS? (5/8/2009 9:58:26 AM)

I'll watch any movie if it's good, period. Don't care about the rating....

Adrenalinejunkie -> RE: does any one watches rated r moiveS? (5/8/2009 10:45:15 AM)

I have seen one. "House", based on the book by TED DEKkER and Frank Peretti. It should have not been rated R. It was no where near that terrifying.

SuspenseWriter -> RE: does any one watches rated r moiveS? (5/8/2009 10:47:35 AM)

Yep. Case in point: Full Metal Jacket. Quite possibly the truest, rawest, most incredible war film ever made. But definitely not something you'd sit down and watch with your Aunt Tillie.

ETA: there's a chance--an outside chance--that my next novel, due out next fall, may be made into a film. There's a strong Christian message woven through it, but also some necessary, plot-driven violence (Vietnam battle scenes). I've been told if this thing does get made, an R rating is almost a foregone conclusion. I'm fine with that. Others may not be.

Consecrated2God -> RE: does any one watches rated r moiveS? (5/8/2009 11:08:25 AM)

I've seen one R rated movie, and that was "The Passion of the Christ." We generally stick to PG and G rated movies. Most of the movies I've seen that are rated PG-13 I felt were full of things that were not God-honoring, and I like to keep a clean conscience.

allisonbrett -> RE: does any one watches rated r moiveS? (5/8/2009 4:13:12 PM)

I do tend to watch for ratings as a guide. Many "R" rated movies are not ones I'd consider due to subject matter or genre regardless of their ratings but then there are some that are exceptional (i.e. Saving Private Ryan). There are those few movies that do surpass the ratings.

Personally, I don't like to watch a film with excessive cussing especially the F bomb. I went to see Lady Killers with Tom Hanks and got so tired of all ways the "F" word was used I finally got up and left (as did much of the theater audience). I never knew that word could be so grammatically versatile! I also disllike excessive or gratuitous violence especially when it has little meaning or plot. Gore themed flicks are a big "NO" for me. I also can't stand blatant sexuality/nudity. I have a much better imagination and don't need some soft porn version of some lousy director's interpretation to get the idea.

Overall, I am rather selective on what I watch. There are many things in this world that I just don't want to allow into my mind and thought patterns. I certainly wouldn't feel comfortable watching some slasher or soft core porn sharing popcorn with Jesus.

stateofgrace -> RE: does any one watches rated r moiveS? (5/8/2009 5:06:50 PM)

The rating system is very subjective. Films like "Slumdog Millionaire" get R ratings but your typical gross-joke comedy will get PG-13. And even stylized comic book style violence will get a film a PG-13 rating - big difference between the first two Spiderman films and the most recent two Batman films as far as the tone and the violence, but they have the same rating!

Well put.

There are many R rated movies out there that are very entertaining. There are also many G and PG rated movies that I would not see even if someone paid me.

It's very simple. If you don't like it, or don't think you should like it, then don't see it. Art tends to be subjective in it's interpretation. It's funny that way.

Last year, I took my kids to see "Spiderwick Chronicles." It should have been rated "R." The monsters were very scary and very gory when they got killed. The kids created some sort of magic barrier around their house to protect it. They conjured up some sort of creature at one point. I should have walked out but didn't. I found the witchcraft in this movie to be way more dangerous than anything in the "Harry Potter" movies. And this movie was PG, not even PG-13.

I was really bothered by the rating of this movie, and this is from someone who is not offended by language in movies, nor by (non-gratuitous) nudity in R rated movies.

I very rarely notice the rating. I usually go by if the movie seems interesting to me or not.

mikalf70 -> RE: does any one watches rated r moiveS? (5/12/2009 7:49:55 PM)

I am very careful about what I watch especially when it comes to entertainment. An R rating or even some PG-13 is typically a red flag for me. Since I begun walking closer with the Lord in the past year He has taken most of my appetite for entertainment that I once would have enjoyed. It's OK I really don't miss it. It is hard to enjoy or laugh at the things that reflect my life before I came to know Christ.

Colossians 3:1-7
1Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 2Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4When Christ, who is your[a] life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

5Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. 7You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.

If the entire bible will be made into a movie....it will not be G/PG ratings at all.

Ditto.

They would be hard pressed to get it an R rating, even. There's an awful lot of stuff in the bible that would earn an X rating if it were filmed true to the book.

That's how I feel.

JustaFan -> RE: does any one watches rated r moiveS? (5/21/2009 5:06:32 AM)

Often directors will intentionally put a few curses into a movie in order to get an R rating instead of a PG. They say some customers won't go to a PG movie because it's perceived as kidstuff. For instance, I listened to the directors commentary track on the Gosford Park DVD. He mentioned that he had one character use the F word two times in order to get an R rating.

You'll miss an awful lot of good movies that aren't offensive if you go by the rating system.

Same here, I usually take a double look before I consider an R rated film as a general rule. Either there will be excessive language, violence and/or nudity that I'd rather not see in a film at all.

I agree with this as well.

MrFribbles -> RE: does any one watches rated r moiveS? (5/23/2009 6:09:56 PM)

I think ratings can be helpful, but I think it's much wiser to examine the actual content instead of just going off the rating. As much as I dislike much of their opinionated writing, PluggedInOnline.com has a pretty good content guide for most new movies. There are some PG-13 movies I won't see because they seem too sketchy, whereas there are plenty of R rated films that easily top my personal Favorite Movies list.

So, all that to say, yes, I watch R rated movies sometimes.

Concerto -> RE: does any one watches rated r moiveS? (6/6/2009 6:59:53 AM)

I no longer watch R movies (although I did see Passion of the Christ)...R movies contain elements that believers should not be seeing. There are exceptions of course....war movies are naturally going to be violent..however, all the movies being put out today at abuse the name of the Lord should not be watched by believers, plain and simple.

How can a believer, who hears the name of the Lord cursed in a movie, consider that entertainment?
