christsstar -> I need music recommendations..... (5/8/2009 12:12:26 PM)

I am so tired of the music that I have and I have a $50 gift card at itunes. So ... I can get roughly 5 albums, or several pieces thereof.

Most of my music is ancient (in terms of music anyway) and I would like something fun and new.

My favorite older Christian groups/artists are:
*Relient K (I have all their albums I believe)
*Jars of Clay (I own 5 of these .. and am burned out on their sound)
*Third Day (I own 4 of these ... am burned out on his voice)
*Jennifer Knapp (I own all three of hers)
*Kendall Payne (I own both of hers)

I have recently discovered Red, Day of Fire and Decyfer Down. We own both Red albums and two Day of Fire albums (not sure if that's all they have or not). I really like this harder style, and is kind of what I'm looking for.

I like but am not in love with Skillet.

I own Audio Adrenaline and Newsboys, but again, am not in love with them. They were a fad of my teen years.

I enjoy Delirious, Chris Tomlin, Passion, and the more "worship-y" artists, but not my favorite for jamming to while running, working, cleaning, etc. However, since the albums I have are pretty old, I wouldn't be opposed to looking at something new in this genre. I don't know ANY of the songs we sing in church anymore, and I used to know them all.

I'm not a fan at all of the Top 40 style that's played on K-Love. (I wish I got Air 1 where I live....)

I own Tree63 and Olivia the Band; they're OK, but not my favorite.

I really enjoy Eli - I have both of his.

I have 2 Switchfoot albums --- their sound grates on my nerves a little bit. Feels to redundant and run-down.

Albums I have that I enjoy from time to time, but I really own because of the girls I used to hang with are: Casting Crowns, FFH and Erin O'Donnel.

I have a Considering Lily album - do they have more than 1? I enjoy it, but again, not my favorite. Of course the song that I love by them isn't even on this album - Beautiful You.

Many years ago I used to go into the Christian bookstore and get the $3 sampler CDs and that's how I found a lot of my music. But either those CDs aren't made anymore or my bookstore doesn't carry them. And I'm not too interested in paying $30 for the WOW CDs.

Any Thoughts???? Is there anything left for me??? I've searched on itunes and keep hitting the same dead end. I just don't know anymore.

(If you couldn't tell based on my randomness of the post, I just went through my CD case and named off what I had and my level of liking of it.)

LetGo2God -> RE: I need music recommendations..... (5/8/2009 12:57:56 PM)

Do you like Family Force 5? How about Lifehouse? or maybe The Fray?

rawr.ben -> RE: I need music recommendations..... (5/8/2009 12:59:16 PM)

Try GS Megaphone.

I am pretty sure they are no longer around, but dig up their old albums. Pretty talented guys.

christsstar -> RE: I need music recommendations..... (5/8/2009 1:04:59 PM)

Don't like Lifehouse. I have 2 albums (I forgot to mention them), but all their songs sound the same to me.

Family Force 5 I've not heard of. I'll check them out. And GS Megaphone. Thanks.

heathjack -> RE: I need music recommendations..... (5/8/2009 1:15:32 PM)

christsstar -> RE: I need music recommendations..... (5/8/2009 1:51:49 PM)

Heath ... I'm having a hard time with the names of the groups in your post. Can you put them in a list?

I think we have Decyfer Down's new CD.

Giggles56 -> RE: I need music recommendations..... (5/8/2009 4:06:53 PM)

May I suggest you check out these labels. They have a lot of what you are looking for. Click on the artist to get info and their myspace. There are samples on the websites as well.

http://www.toothandnail.com/artists/ A lot of great bands!!

http://www.becrecordings.com/ A little bit of everything.

http://www.solidstaterecords.com/ These are a mixture of metal and hardcore, if you like that type of music.

Hope this helps.

They had two albums, the first album had "Beautiful You" on it... it was a great album, especially if you liked that song. The second album was TERRIBLE. I'd consider picking up the first one.

christsstar -> RE: I need music recommendations..... (5/8/2009 5:33:28 PM)

I can't find the first one anywhere. I got Beautiful You on one of my compilation cheapy albums (that I can't seem to locate anymore ......).

Thanks Giggles. I'll check out those sites when I have some time. Can't do most of that stuff at work.

Adrenalinejunkie -> RE: I need music recommendations..... (5/8/2009 5:57:24 PM)

You like Relient K? Then I'd suggest Hawk Nelson, Nevertheless and Stellar Kart. As for the harder sound you mentioned, I would suggest DecembeRadio, Seventh Day Slumber, Thousand Foot Krutch, Falling Up and Pillar. Also you might want to check out NEEDTOBREATHE. They sound kinda similar to Third Day, but not exactly.

LoveNeverDies -> RE: I need music recommendations..... (5/8/2009 6:48:59 PM)

MxPx, Dogwood, Crashdog, Headnoise, Children 18:3, Officer Negetive, and Flatfoot 56 are in the same genre as Relient K. They aren't the same sound-wise, though.
7th Time Down's sound is pretty southern. You might have to look online for their CDs, though.
Not sure if the kind of harder style you're looking for is in these bands, but worth a try. Narnia, X-Sinner, Saviour Machine, Virgin Black(if you don't like growls, avoid recent one. e_o Death growl central right there.), Demon Hunter(the not as screamy album is Storm the Gates of Hell), Circle of Dust, Place of Skulls, Jesus Wept, Underoath, Rob Rock, 7 Days, and Resurrection Band. For some more worshipy stuff, Glenn Kaiser is pretty good.

Auben -> RE: I need music recommendations..... (5/9/2009 8:22:05 PM)

I think that Tooth and Nail link is a good start.

I'm more on the acoustic/folky/alt country end of the spectrum so it would be hard to make recommendations but I've enjoyed some:

Thrice (didn't notice them until they released some acoustic stuff on their last album but usually they're harder then that)
mewithoutYou
SonLux (a bit more electronica then you're probably looking for)
Cloud Cult
House of Heroes

and even occasionally the Mae Shi (although they tend to be entirely too random for me)

Matthew-59 -> RE: I need music recommendations..... (5/9/2009 8:44:34 PM)

If you like real heavy Christian rock, then there is not much better than....

Eternal Decision

Their website: LINK

I like their first album (self titled) the best!!
My fav's on it... Overflow (starts out with theme to Scooby Doo. LOL!!), Power, Risen, Fearless, Hunger... and all the rest!! [:)]

Kendall Payne (I own both of hers)
Kendall actually has at least one more cd. It was very mellow, predominantly just her and a piano. I haven't been to her web site in while, so there may be even more new stuff. I love Jordan's Sister and Grown.

Now then, if you like Relient K, a couple of sound-alikes are Hawk Nelson and Stellar Kart.

I would like to recommend a group called MAE. Their web site is www.whatismae.com. I especially like "The Everglow" and "Destination B Sides".

We still occasionally get those samplers, bu not like in the old days. And the music on them is mainly what you don't want to hear.

christsstar -> RE: I need music recommendations..... (5/10/2009 4:06:38 PM)

Oh ... Bill ... you're right. Kendall Payne does have 3, and I have all three. Jordan's Sister, Grown and Paper Skin. And I love them all.

thanks for all the recommendations y'all. Keep them coming.

I'll second that one. They're not everyone's cup of tea, but personally, I love 'em. Their latest album, Brother Sister, is probably their most accessible, but if you enjoy rougher music, then any of their stuff would be a good bet.

If you like thoughtful lyrics, with a sorta folk/pop sound... and some really cool talking points in between the songs:

Click here >> Jason Gray
Or here >> acoustic storytime

Other CD's of his:
"All The Lovely Losers"
"Live Vol. 1 Hoping"
"A Place Called Hope"

LetGo2God -> RE: I need music recommendations..... (5/11/2009 12:34:35 PM)

I was going to mention Decyfer Down, but you said you were already onto them.Anyway, I hope you find what you're looking for.

humbleinspirit -> RE: I need music recommendations..... (5/11/2009 10:33:47 PM)

Hi Christine, I was wondering, what do you think about The Fray?

christsstar -> RE: I need music recommendations..... (5/12/2009 1:32:59 PM)

Haven't heard them. I'll check them out though. Thanks Mike.

humbleinspirit -> RE: I need music recommendations..... (5/14/2009 8:03:16 AM)

They are a band of Christians from Denver who have made it big in the mainstream and have a deal with a Christian label as well. I like them, but then again I am just a tad bit older. [;)]

christsstar -> RE: I need music recommendations..... (5/14/2009 12:09:48 PM)

How old are they? both the band and the members?

everythingat -> RE: I need music recommendations..... (5/14/2009 1:47:19 PM)

My recommendation for you would be to hit up Last FM. It's just a website for music. You can type in a band you like, then on the left you can click on Similar Artists and go through them. That's how I usually find new music.

I will 2nd this. Look at my profile on Last.fm (link in my signature), and I think you will find ALOT of artists you would like. Especially the ones that have alot of plays on my profile. :)
