One knock I've read against them is that they - using some kind of legal loophole - don't pay any royalties or fees to the artists they "borrow" tunes from for their parodies. I have no idea if this is true or not, it's just something that came up on another site where Christian music was being discussed. Anyone else heard this? Seems kind of a "slippery slope", especially for a Christian band, if this were to be true.

I think that's the Wierd Al law, that was passed so that Weird Al wasn't required to pay royalties when he parodied a song...

I heard just the opposite - that Wierd Al goes out of his way to make sure all royalties are paid, and then some. Which, of course makes the accusations against Apoligetix even more startling - the "secular" artist pays and the Christian artist supposedly does not. Again, I have no way of knowing what the real truth is. Just something I've read or heard along the way.

the way I understood it... The law allows anyone to parody songs without paying royalties. It is generally custom for artists to get permission from the original artist to parody their song, but I think that's courtesy, not law. The problem with what Apologetix are doing is that almost none of the artists that they parody would give them permission to do a "Christian" themed parody, so if they want to do parodies, they really CAN'T ask for permission. But like I said, I think it's generally a courtesy and not a law to get permission.

That makes perfect sense. Honestly, I think the person who brought up the whole paying royalties thing in the other discussion forum was looking for anything negative s/he could find about any Christian artist.

I love their songs. Has anyone seen the video on Youtube called Baa we're lambs? It's the tune of a Beachboys song. It's so cool! I just love that song.

ApologetiX are great! I got to have dinner with Jimmy Tanner, the drummer, and his wife in January of this year. Great people!
