Hi there. We are throwing my high school homeschooler a surprise graduation party Sat. night. I am look for ideas to make the evening special, fun and memorable. Any ideas or input that you could share would be appreciated. I am putting together a powerpoint presentation of his life, but need some more input. Have you done it or attended a private homeschool grad?? What would you do if you were giving the party? Thanks. It should be around 75 people there.

Is this at your home, a relative's backyard, a banquet facility? If it is a private home, is there a pool? [because then you can have water-balloon and squirt-gun games if it is informal or floating candles if it is formal.] What budget do you have? Like $5 per person? Or $100/person? Catered, self-catered with help from party trays, potluck from guests? Served and sit-down or buffet? Have something the guests can sign – a "fun" version of a guest book, perhaps a t-shirt, or a stuffed animal (would have to be a big one with that many guests), or a beach ball, or a poster, or an umbrella, or something significant that matches his hobbies or talent. Have every guest fill out a little file card with their "advice" for the adult world or college. 75 persons is a bit large to read them all, the groups I've seen have fun with this are more like 25-30, but maybe you could just do a few random ones… Trivia games can work well in large groups, especially if you have a microphone available for the emcee; ask some personal stuff about the grad (funniest schooling moment?) and ask some questions he had during his schooling (What is the first amendment about?) Are you as smart as a high school grad?

We did a picture stream on the laptop with a monitor. Sort of like a digital frame.

I"m hoping to do a cermony/party. I want to add christian ideas when we go through this. Like communion...not sure what else. I want to not only honor my graduating child but make the whole thing Christ centered so that it is a witness and testimony to even other christians. There is something very touching when we attend homeschool events and they open in prayer and freely talk about Christ and raising our children to be Christ like and I think sometimes we "loose" that depending on who we hang around. I can't see public school graduations being very Christ centered and that is the whole reason why we homeschooled to begin with. Maybe just my thoughts will stir up some ideas for you.

Our second child has graduated from homeschool, and we'll be having her party this Sunday evening. The theme will be a little different than her older sister's, but we'll have some things the same. It will be in the backyard with lots of food for everyone and music that our daughter selected. We might even have some dancing. We'll have a mic and ask people to say a few words about Laura and some words of wisdom for her. Hopefully, we can tape this. My husband will also say a few words about her and also thanks to those present for the contributions they've made to her life. Mostly, I hope she'll get to visit with the people there. This all seemed to work for my oldest, so that's why we're doing it again.
