I recently saw "Welcome to Paradise" starring Crystal Bernard. It's definitely a family movie, as she plays a minister transferred to a small Texas town. She uses her offbeat charm and genuine love for others to overcome obstacles and set an example of Christ-like love. Without being preachy, the movie handles greed, ecclesiastical power-mongering, racism, helping the homeless, dealing with bullies and even dyslexia. She overcomes not by fighting fire with fire, but by standing on her convictions and seeking the best in others, even those who oppose her. All without a curse word or exposed flesh! Another one I like is "Edge of America". It's the fact based story of how an urban African American man coaches a girl's basket ball team at a reservation HS to be champions. He learns that there is more to life than trying to be in control of everything, and his students learn that they can overcome many obstacles if they set their minds to it.

Akeelah & the Bee ROCKS! My first thought was "Mr. Holland's Opus".....he takes what was to be considered a "temporary" position....and STILL gives it all he's got. The "typical" person would have regarded it as "just" a temporary thing...and simply "walked through the motions", as if it really didn't matter....since, afterall, it was "just temporary".... thankfully, when i was in high school....our band director was a "Mr. Holland"....so much passion for teaching and for music. And, for really not much in 'return' (that one could immediately see)... Shawshank Redemption - A story about HOPE...and, never giving up.... Gran Torino - talk to your neighbors, and find out who they REALLY are (instead of just who you THINK they are...), you just may be surprised.... Pursuit of Happyness....it's NEVER too late to find a career-path that you're passionate about....and no matter how bad your current situation is...things can always get better....with determination.... I am sure if I sat here...i could come up with dozens more....

A few days ago I saw Autism: The Musical. It's a documentary about a project put together by a mother of a child with severe autism. She used music and acting in an attempt to bring a group of kids out of their own little worlds. It runs the full spectrum of emotions. Joy, sadness, triumph, heartbreak, laughter. A great film, I thought.
