I would love to hear advice on encouraging my 15 yr old to participate in Driver's ed. She is unwilling to at this point. I don't know if I should just consider this a gift and let it be or encourage her to take this step towards independence? Any suggestions would be welcome.

MY Ds is 15, will be 16 in a couple of weeks and didn't want to go to driver's ed, either. He said he didn't want to go because he saw how the people who teach it drive around town. He siad he was going to wait until he was 18 to get his license.
Our state doen't allow parents to teach the kids how to drive.

If you need her to drive to take some pressure off of you, it is important to get to the bottom of why she doesn't want to drive. You could also give her an ultimatium and let her know that she need to drive and get good at it, because when she turns sixteen you are not going to be nearly as available to drive her around as you are now. You could also set a rule in place that if she wants you to take her somewhere, she will have to drive or she doesn't go.

I let my daughter put it off until she was 16 1/2 and then I insisted she take it. She did, and got her permit, but was not in the least bit interested in driving until she was away at college.

She was four months shy of 18 when she went off to college. Since she was home on weekends, her Dad let her drive then. She got her license about a week after her 18th birthday.

So I was glad I made her take the class when I did, but earlier probably would not have been any more useful. As it was it still took her a little over a year to warm up to the idea of driving. [:)]

I was in my 30's when I learned to drive! I think I was 18yo when my mom decided I needed to learn how to drive. I wasn't ready. I had a very minor accident, and said that was it! Dh tried to teach me to drive when I was 21yo. His methods (yelling!) didn't work, so I quit again. I finally learned when ds1 went to half day kindergarten, and the school didn't provide mid-day bussing, so I HAD to drive.

Ds1 is 16yo. He's almost ready. He does a lot of bicycling, so had "road smarts". He'll be taking college classes this fall, so we'll probably get serious about it then. Biggest problem will be ds2. He's not nearly as mature as ds1, so I hesitate to let him drive at 16yo.

I got my permit when I was 15 & took driver's ed through the school, but didn't actually get my license until I was 17. I was terrified to take the test & convinced I would fail (I think mostly because of my 1st experiences with my dad trying to teach me)! Dh waited until he was 18, because his school district quit providing drivers ed & his dad couldn't afford it. In OH, you could take the test at 18 w/o having driver's ed. I'm not sure when my kids will be ready. Right now, I'd say ds (who is 14) will not be ready next year, but we'll see.

I signed my dd up for drivers ed at our local high school when she was almost 15 and she just got her permint last week. She didn't really want to do it but I told her she was going to do it now. A lot of her friends just got their permits so that helps a lot. She has done well driving us around. I am letting her get comfortable on the highway and rural roads and not trying towns and cities yet. My friend made her children the primary drivers as soon as they got their permits. That way they are driving for a whole year under parental supervision. Going to the high school was eye opening to her. She NEVER wants to go to public school. She couldn't get over the lack of respect, discipline and amount of profanity. This has also improved her attitude at home. We think the sooner the better. Just one small step to independence.

Dc#1 is 17.5yo and still doesn't have his learner's permit. Dh and I have to get our licenses renewed soon, so we'll take ds to get his learner's then. Ds just hasn't been interested in driving. He would rather be chauffeured while he reads. 14.5yodc#2 is eager to get his learner's, so we'll probably be taking him as soon as he is allowed to get it.

I haven't been in too much of a hurry to get ds to drive. When we were at our state's homeschool convention last year, I suggested we get the driver's ed curriculum. Dh said that ds was too immature to drive and needed to show responsibility first. We bought it this year.

I have mixed feeling about kids driving. A huge percentage of auto accidents are caused by 16-17yo.

He sounds like my Ds. Why should he have to worry about driving when he can read a chapter on the way home from the library? [:)][:)]

That's what I miss about being driven around. Reading is fun. [:D]

I took driver's ed when I was 16. It was the thing everyone did, and I can say that I truly enjoyed it. The guy was a safe driver and a good role model for the kids. I'm glad I took it, if only to get my learner's permit.

I envy all of you who can ride in the car & read! I get carsick (even now as an adult), so I'd much rather drive actually! I mean if I have to sit & stare straight ahead anyway, I might as well be driving - KWIM?

I am 24 years old and I do not want a license... however my bf thinks i need it and so do my parents.
I did want it when I was 16 years old, but then my parents said that driving was too hard... [sm=worried.gif]
so then i developed a fear of driving after that...
Just this february, my friend who was 17 died in a car accident- he was not driving though......
Anyways, i was home schooled in 7th grade because in school i had no friends... however being schooled at home did not allow me to make many friends... so i attended 8th grade in a Christian school.
btw, i cannot read in the car... nor play games either- i also get carsick too. i used to get carsick when i was little just by long car rides in general-i.e more than 20 minutes longs :/
