A Red Dawn remake is in the works except apparently this time it will not be the Soviet Union which does the invading (does the name of the movie make sense then?). From Wikipedia "Two top executives at MGM, Harry Sloan and Mary Parent, announced that a remake of Red Dawn is in the early stages of pre-production in May 2008 at the Festival de Cannes. This was announced along with a big-budget rebuild of RoboCop, which director Darren Aronofsky among others has recently been in to discuss. The remake of Red Dawn is slated to be directed by Dan Bradley, who has previously worked as a second unit director and stunt coordinator on films such as The Bourne Ultimatum, Spiderman 3 and the Quantum of Solace. MGM has announced that Red Dawn will be remade "keeping in mind the post-9/11 world that we're in".[1][5] In a further announcement the same month, Dan Bradley has been confirmed as the director with Carl Ellsworth, screenwriter of Red Eye and Disturbia writing the updated screenplay.[1][6] Ellsworth will be working from a story written by Jeremy Passmore. Vincent Newman (A Man Apart) is also acting in a producer capacity.[7] Australian Chris Hemsworth has been cast in a lead role.[8]"

Sweet! Maybe it will be called Muslim Extremist Dawn or Red and White Checkered Bandanna Dawn? Or, maybe they will keep Obama's theme of the US as evil and it could be called Infidel Dawn... Anyway, loved the old movie, and any movie that deals with survival and/or post apocalyptic themes. Just as exciting was the mention of a RoboCop reboot! Sweeeeet!

That will be interesting to see how they re make that. I know what my DH is going to say, I will once again get the speech that they no longer have any imagination in Hollywood so they have resorted once again to re makes. LOL.

I enjoyed the first "Dawn" when it came out, but I have trouble seeing a remake work in a post-Cold War setting.

When I saw Red Dawn the first time I was immediately hooked. Over the decades I've probably watched it 25 times.

ORIGINAL: crankius I liked Red Dawn. Can't see why it should be remade, though, and with a different invader--why not just write a new story with a new script and a new name? It doesn't make sense to me. eggszactly!!!!!!!!!

Red Dawn was a really good movie. I think it can work as a remake and will probably make some fair coin...which is what the studios really care about. As to the lack of originality...I would argue that the screenwriters see the goldmine that is in remakes. They take an old plot, spice it up a bit, throw in some saucy special effects, promote it as better than sliced bread, and rake in millions from us. It works because we already have good feelings about these movies and are thus more inclined to want to see the updated version. That, and it works because it works. If you hate the lack of originality...don't go to any movie that isn't original.
