What I took away from it is that the faculty and students are good, well-meaning people and any problems you may have with Liberty are likely problems you have with that brand of Christianity. The creationism questions are to be expected, I suppose, but what really bothers me is being out of touch and isolated from the rest of society. Seeking the advice of one unsaved person on what to get another for Christmas, solely because both are unsaved? Really? I've been harping on this self-segregation for a while, but it's a problem much bigger than Liberty. -Dan.

Was this about Kevin Roose? It's a well-written and interesting book, IMO. I have a daughter attending Liberty, and I think that over the school strikes a pretty good balance regarding being in the world but not of it. That doesn't mean that I agree with every stand the administrators have taken on every issue, but that overall I think there's a good balance. It's not nearly as restrictive a school as Bob Jones University, where my niece attended. And there is a decided focus on spiritual life at Liberty that one will find at few other schools these days. Kevin found that things at Liberty really weren't so much like all the common stereotypes. The school has rules, and students tend to bend them when they can and sometimes break them (such as not viewing R rated movies, kids know the ratings system is subjective and unreliable; and, I suspect not many seriously dating couples at Liberty haven't kissed). Many of the rules also have a protective angle to them (such as restricting members of the opposite sex from dorm rooms, and having to sign out when you leave the school on weekends so they know where you are). Comparing the rules with Bob Jones, though, Liberty seems like a bastion of liberality. Dress code: Bob Jones, girls have to wear skits/dresses except for participation in athletic activity. Liberty, girls can wear neat jeans, pants, and capris to classes, and fingertip length shorts on campus. Arts and music: Bob Jones, only classical music and classical hymns allowed. Liberty, basically any type of music is allowed if it is not "lewd." Liberty's drama department puts on musicals once or twice throughout the year, last year that included West Side Story. Bob Jones does not allow students to see movies for entertainment. Liberty allows this for PG-13 and lower rated films; there is a dollar movie theater right across from campus and movies are also shown on campus. Well-known Christian rock bands come to Liberty for concerts several times a year. Bible: Bob Jones, KJV-only. Liberty...not. Given the restrictions on arts and music, you can guess what worship would be like at Bob Jones. In addition to the more traditional Thomas Road Baptist, Liberty has a "Campus Church" that is more emerging-style (not emergent theologically, but casual, rock worship, etc.). The Liberty school bookstore carries Kevin's book, but they've got a very silly disclaimer stuffed into the front of the book. Which is rather funny, IMO, because not very far away on the shelf from Unlikely Disciple sits Ted Turner's autobiography! Ted Turner is pretty anti-Christian, and there isn't any disclaimer stuffed into his book.
