I met Steve Demme today. He is very nice and just like he seems on the videos. (Steve Demme is the Math-U-See guy.) He was at the Washington Homeschool Organization convention. My daughters and I were there all day and enjoyed ourselves. I didn't spend a lot of money, but got some great books that I needed.

Cynthia - we heard him speak at our convention in May! We really enjoyed him! We've never used Math-U-See, so didn't know who he was before he spoke. His talk was very encouraging! We, on the other hand, spent a LOT of money at our convention. But not over our budget & we got almost everything we need for next year! WOF - praying for you to find your phone! I'm feeling good this morning! I am up early (for a Saturday), but I figure that's because I got about 12 hours of sleep on Thursday night! We have lots to get done around the house this weekend! At least I'm feeling better!

Amy, I am glad that you are feeling better! It is humid and rainy here. (They probably sound like the same thing, but with the warm weather, it FEELS more humid.) The entire house feels damp... even my printer paper! I am officially unemployed now. It has been 30 days since I was able to work, so they had to terminate me. I am rehire-able, as it was for medical reasons. But they will not be able to rehire me for 30-60 days, and the HR manager encouraged me to take a couple of months to recuperate. So, it will be a relaxing summer for us!

Melissa - that's good that they will be able to re-hire you. I'm glad you will be able to take your time to recuperate before returning to work. I pray this won't put too much of a strain on your family budget & that you will have a restful summer break!!

Sent ds1 one his bicycle tour this morning. I know he's gonna have a blast! Still, it was hard to let him go. Link to my post (with photos!) on my running forum is here: http://www.kickrunners.com/forum/showthread.php?t=53294

Our homeschool conference is over. I went to quite a few speakers this year. It was very good. I am feeling a bit discouraged about Mr. Manly. I have come to the conclusion that he is dyslexic. I can fix that, if he would co-operate, but he gets so frustrated. I think I'm going to focus on reading to him for a while and then let him join in when he wants to. For now, I think that will help. If he gets calmer about it, I'll do some other things too. His biggest impediment is that he gets frustrated too easily and become impossible to work with. Hopefully that will change over the next few months as I work with his attitude separately from his academics and read interesting material to him over the summer. Dh travels for work. In a week or so we are going to go with him and spend two nights with him. I think we will have a great time. He asked the hotel manger to upgrade his room for free so the family can stay and they said no problem. There is a pool there and unless they give our really great room away we will have a suite with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, living room and kitchenette. I hope the whether is good as the pool is an outdoor pool and we plan to spend a lot of time there while Daddy is working. This is a nice hotel. We have stayed with him there before. They also have a very nice free breakfast. We will make sandwiches for lunch and one night the hotel makes dinner for all the guests, so we will order pizza another night. I am really looking forward to this. I have a stack of reading to do and hope to read for hours on end with the kids happily playing. I hope to keep up with TL in her reading this year, which means I have to start out ahead in order to not get behind her. I hope to read at least ten books this summer. Here's the first ten on my list: Beowulf The Ecclesiastical History of the English People, by Venerable Bede “The Pardoner’s Tale” and “The Nun’s Priest’s Tale,” by Chaucer Sir Gawain and The Green Knight The Faerie Queene, by Edmund Spencer Macbeth, Shakespeare Dr. Faustus, by Christopher Marlowe “Holy Sonnet XIV,” by John Donne “Sixlex,” by Henry Vaughan I don't have them all yet. I ordered John Donne from the library to see if "Holy Sonnet XIV" is in it before I get to that point. Some of these are available through the library, but trying to get them in the middle of the year can sometimes be a challenge. Our library also just limited number of holds due to budget cuts. This can be a problem if you have things on your list that take months before your turn comes up, as they take space on your holds list. Oh well, I'm sure I'll survive. When I told my husband that they were limiting our holds to 25, I think he was trying not to look relieved. ETA: I do have three children, so realistically I could have 75 holds. lol That won't happen. I could never keep track.

I missed my race this morning! There was a detour which made me late. THis was an "A" race. Now I need to decide if I'm going to "make it up" next weekend. If I do, that means I lose a weekend of training...

I've never missed a race. It was up near Cleveland, mapquest said 2:20. I left at 4am for a 7am start. I should have had plenty of time. I called my coach. He said he had never missed a race like that so didn't really know what to say.

Sorry about your missed race, His. I'd be aggravated. Amy, I hope you have your a/c fixed. We had temps close to 100 last week with humidity and this week will be much the same. It is sweltering here. I have tried three times during the day to call my Dad. They have been out all day enjoying themselves I'm sure, but I can't try anymore as they will be heading to bed soon.

I just discovered my little beagle has a hernia! For some reason I decided to sit on the floor and pulled him into my lap and flipped him on his back. Uh, something wasn't looking right for a neutered dog... I, uh, was able to, well, put things "back". It felt like a loop of bowel. Needless to say, he'll need to go to the vet tomorrow morning, and will need surgery. This could explain why he hasn't gotten on a potty scheudle. When he has to go, he goes RIGHT NOW. He can hold his pee but not poop.

Any chance you could find one of those on amazon.com or at your public school book give-away? They have seven selection for John Donne in that textbook, but not Holy Sonnet XIV, though a good poetry book from the library should have it. You might even find it online somewhere. And also the only selection by Henry Vaughan is The Retreat. I love teaching out of this textbook and have used it once already for a course in Brit Lit and have used it as a reference and for author's bios just in general. One of my good friend had a hand in putting it together, and she gave me my copy. I will treasure it always.

Tomorrow will be 100..woo hoo. Cynthia, Your dessert sounds great, but the domestic diva does not bake in this heat. It is almost midnight and it is 84 degrees, humidity is at 70% and the dew point is at 73 degrees. And I am south of this area so everything is a bit higher here. And the weather temps instead of being one day of 99 have now changed to the whole week being 99. This is why I have my bread machine and my crock pot...hot meals and baked bread without heating up the entire kitchen. I will do stove top cooking, but no oven! I'm glad Judii is enjoying the cool temps...I know you know what it was like to be sweltering!!, His, Poor pooch! Now you know he was not being ornery about the potty though, which I'm sure is a relief to you.

I don't blame you for not using your oven. I normally don't bake when it's hot out. Yesterday was not hot. Hopefully today will be warmer.

Pup seems to be okay. Has something to do with the fact that he was neutered when he was "mature"...

Your theory about living outside makes sense. Does he go in his kennel?
