jana--Welcome! I don't know that we've met. Tell us a bit about yourself! Or at least refresh my memory...

Judy--58* isn't too bad! Heck, the lake is 62* this morning, and if I had a scheduled swim, I'd do it! I am racing this weekend and I am assuming the water temp will be similar.

Shadow--how do you grade sports?!

Ds1 was cracking me up yesterday. At his race this past weekend he got a sample energy bar. He said it tasted pretty good. Although, after the race, I think ANYTHING would taste pretty good! He went online and was spouting off the grams of carb/protein/fat. Uh, that ain't normal for a 16yo. Regardless, the things are $2 each. I think not!!!

I need to go to the library today. The nutritionist I've been working with wants me to get more whole grains. It's pretty slim pickings at the grocery store. Somehow manufacturers think "good for you" is a good reason to jack up the price. Other than that, the new diet is going well. I have three columns of foods. Each meal I pick something from each column.

Update on the new pup--he won. We ended up getting a second crate for upstairs. Now, ds3 potties him before bed, then puts him in the crate in his room. Benny no longer gets up multiple times/night! He has a gazillion chew toys, but his favorite remains the TV remote. The best is to stick half a dog bone in the kong toy. He's been working on that for the past half hour!

LOL! Amy is a nice name too & not common for a boy!!

Narnia - praying for your meeting to go well & you to get to say what you need to. I think taking a list of points is a good idea! It may not be the way you wanted to leave, but it may be God's way of getting you out of there sooner than later!

(((his))) - praying for you!!

We just finished yesterday! Yippee....I'm going to give them a little break and then we start in on cleaning out closets and stuff....my favorite summer activity!
Jana - welcome to the chat thread! I am getting ready for a garage sale this weekend - so we're in total clean out mode! We're moving in the fall & I want to get rid of all the stuff we've collected (& don't need) in the 4 years we've lived here! It's so exciting to actually have room in closets & drawers!!

Shadow - we'll be in the same boat as you are next year. The only thing I've ever "tested" in was Math. Now, I'll have to make sure to keep grades in all the subjects. We have other curriculum that has tests, but we've always done them orally or as a review sort of thing (never sit down & take this & I'll grade you on it, KWIM?). Anyway, it will be different for us.

Shadow--how do you grade sports?!
I have been wondering this too. Ds doesn't do an organized PE class, but does do Karate. I figured if he is attending regularly & progressing, then he passes. As far as I remember, PE was always pass/fail. His - do they need PE credits in OH for high school? I really need to look up the requirements, just haven't had a chance yet.

It's raining out, so I need to call & find out if they are canceling the golf clinic for dd. I sort of hope so, then we can tackle the rest of her room this morning (when we're both a bit more fresh)! She actually has extra room in her closet now & filled several bags & small boxes with stuff to put in the garage sale (and of course a bag of trash & lots of paper to put in the recycling ). She even seems excited to have her room in order & have space for things! I hope that excitement lasts!

Amy--yes, a half credit is required. I'm not worried about ds1. Last season, he did 3 5K's, 4 sprint duathlons, and 2 century bike tours. Not to mention all the training required! This season, he's done the 2 century tours and two bike races, and then will do a three week bike tour later this month. I think PE is covered!

For ds2, who is NOT athletically minded, I'll have him train for and complete either a 5K or an orgainzed bike tour. That is IF we continue to HS. Otherwise, he'll pick it up in school.

Ds3 will be doing another 5K next weekend. I'm not too thrilled that his training has dropped off. He likes to run at the track with me. However, Thursday mornings roll 'round and he can't be bothered. Okay, if you want to race, you need to get three runs in, otherwise it's a no-go. This is a fund raiser for the radio station the kids listen to, so it won't be a total waste.

His - is that only 1/2 credit each year? And is it only for high school or elementary too? Dd has done an organized PE class here, but since we'll be moving once the school year has already begun, I'm not sure what will be open there. She does do horseback riding & golf, so I could have her continue those. She's not riding right now because her teacher quit & I just didn't know if we'd have the time/money to do it this summer.

She did end up having golf today. I just took my Bible & prayer journal (and Sudoku book) and sat in the car. It has quit raining but is pretty gray & gloomy out. Dh e-mailed & said they had some pretty hefty thunderstorms at camp. Our tent is pretty leakproof (except one corner & he's not sure that it was completely zipped there). I bet it's a muddy mess there - I'm sure the boys will have a good time with that!

Half credit TOTAL. I sorta remember that's what I needed to graduate. I don't know that it's required in elementary or middle school. I never worried about it since the kids have done an organized event (5K or bicycle tour) plus all the training required.

I took ds1 and ds2 for haircuts. Dh used to do it, so I was clueless where to go. I ended up taking them back to the barber in our old neighborhood. $7/head. Not bad!!! Ds1 looks like a respectable young man. Ds2 no longer looks like Cousin It.

On the way home we drove by the old house. The new owner is replacing both the front porch and the garage. Exactly why we moved!!! In the back yard there are two oak trees that sprouted the spring after ds1 was born. They were acorns that squirrels forgot. The trees are now huge!

Speaking of dh... he's on FULL disability. He was going into work for a few hours but his boss doesn't want him there at all until he gets a doctors okay.

I'm not sure if Illinois is the only state that does this, but public schoolers her are required to have 3.5 years/credits of PE.

PE grades:

I give an A if my student participated five hours a week with a great attitude. That is an easy A for football season, and for capoeira this fall.

If the class was only one hour a week, like some marital arts are, I would have my student walk 3 or 4 miles a day along with that, about an hour a day. This year my son took two 2 mile walks, one in the morning and one at noon.

I have threatened that if you give me grief about walking or attending class your grade will suffer, but the threat has always been enough to change the attitude.

With my dear daughter who hated P.E., we did one semester of going to the gym with mom every morning for thirty minutes. She had to go both semesters to get the .5 credit, since she didn't want to do an hour a day.

Rw called again this morning to say that she realized that her conversation was veiled and that she did not want to upset me or put me on the defensive, and apologized if that was the case. She did state that they do want to discus dance and see if the problems can be solved.

I still think I will be removed, but we'll see. Their version of problem solve is for me to make all changes they want without question, seems to me.

And one thing I will point out to them is that they seem to want a robot who will never deviate from the dance...in which case dance is not worship based, but performance based, and if that is so, then why do we dance at all? I have other things to say as well.

Narnia, It is very good for you to collect your thoughts and to be prepared. Remember to also pray for the people who will be at the meeting. I am praying that the Holy Spirit will move on all of you before and during the meeting.

his, Yes it is! Ds told me how many calories I ate at Taco Bell the other day. Bet it wasn't as many as his chalupa!!
I told him to check and see how much salt was in the food. Well, dh was right. There is enough salt in one meal for an entire day

Ds went to his camp out and swim. It was sunny but only 61. He said he got pretty cold. Now he is falling asleep on the couch. They stayed up til almost 5 and then got up at 7.

Homegrown, congrats on the boy. Louise is a nice name!

I don't have any records written down for this year, either. I'm going to have to go through books and figure out grades. This has been the worst year we have ever had. We moved so many times, it wasn't funny. The motor home still has stuff in it because there is NO room in this apartment. I told Ds that he needs to write reports out for what he read and I will give him credit for modern literature. He went to the library and came back with a list of all the books he read all year.

He gets credit for health because he took first aid and cpr and has the cards. I bought him a book on nutrition to study and then make a menu plan for a month. I think I'm going to have to count the pre Algebra for math instead of Alg 1. I'm going to pull out (if I can find it) the Stewardship math we never used and let him do that when we start back to school in July.

Ds wanted to go to the high school next year. Well, they are moving all of the 7th and 8th graders into it and doing a lot of things that are making the parents angry. The teachers are also working without a contract.

Narnia, praying for you that everything works out OK.

Thanks everyone. I'm off to get ready for dance and then the meeting afterward. Will update you when I return.

Meeting will happen around 8 p.m. or so CDT, if more of you would like to have a specific time to pray.

Ah, now I undertand why you all wondered what I did for a grade in sports- LOL!

When you play community league football, the coaches want to see report cards and progress reports or you can't play. So when the public school issued any kind of grade, I had to come up with something for my student too.

Ah, the English language. What a hoot!

I'm a little frustrated tonight. Joe went to an employee meeting for the new theater in town. We were all under the impression that he had a job there. Well, it turns out that the company is bringing in some of their own people and Joe was told he may get a call in 30 days if they need more employees. Jake was told he'd get a call in 48 hours. I'm glad that Jake should have another job, but disappointed for Joe. On top of that, Joe wrote on his application that he's in 10th grade, which makes him appear like he was held back. He's actually just finished his 11th grade year, so he's technically a senior. I know we don't make a big deal about grade level, but he knows he was a junior. I guess he never thought about how that applied to the number level of the grade.

At least one of them found a job. I know it's frustrating, though. Ds was trying to find a job here but no one is hiring teens. There are only about 3 places here that anyone under 18 can work, McDonalds, Dairy Queen and maybe Burger King.

We saw ds's old CAP leader last night. She has 5 kids and homeschools them. I know at least 3 of them are still at home. The youngest one is 9. She told us her Dh died about 3 months ago. He wasn't doing well the last time Ds went to Cap in October. Pray for her and the kids. She said she is still in a fog..

Well, I think I'm going to switch back to Math U See. It worked before and I believe it will work again. I'm about ready to toss the Lifepacks.

I'll pray for your CAP leader and her kids.

Yes, I'm glad that Jake may have a job. Not sure how many hours he'll get. Hardees has only been giving him 8-15 hours, and those have been mostly from midnight to 4 am, a really stinky shift to work. It's just that we have a deal with Joe that he can't get his license unless he has a job. I was really looking forward to going with him to get his license tomorrow.

That doesn't sound like a good shift to work. I would fall asleep in the middle of it!
That's too bad that you were looking forward to him getting his license.
Ds doesn't want to get his license until he's 18. It has to do with the driver's training school here. He doesn't like the way the people who teach it drive. The other night, one of his friends was telling us that he goes there for driver's training. He said he was run off the road when he was driving on the expressway. I don't know if I can blame that on the school, though. We only have two lane roads around here so maybe the kid wasn't used to all of the traffic.

Here's something funny that happened today. Ds didn't want to go to church tonight. In the past, if he doesn't want to do something, he'll threaten to call the police or call 911 (and we have told him every time that cops aren't going to come and let him skip school, or make his sister do what he wants etc). So today, he dialed 911 on his cell phones, that have no service. He didn't know that even cell phones with no service can still call 911 (and I didn't realize that he was doing so). So a little after 5:00 this evening, a county Sheriff's deputy showed up at our door investigating 8 incomplete 911 calls coming from our house. I called Ds to the door and asked if he had called 911. He said that he did so the car would be towed and then we wouldn't be able to go to church. Having a cop show up at the door sort of scared him I think. The officer told him that calling 911 when it wasn't an emergency was a crime. Ds was a bit shaken up after that (a real cop showed up at the house and seriously spoke to him!) and he was very mellow and cooperative the rest of the night!. And we did go to church. He is embarrassed about it now and doesn't want us talking about it. I told Dh about it when he came home this evening and he thought it was really funny. I had to fight off the giggles in the car driving to church! I hope that Ds stays cooperative for awhile. I wonder if he'll ever touch a cell phone again

I was not removed from dance. R and rw told me they wanted to hear my thoughts about how dance was going. I told them some things and they were surprised. For instance they had no idea that C was there to restore the dances. They asked me who told me that and I told them she did, and that the decision had been made while I was away on vacation and I did not find out until mid March that was the plan. They told me that they did not know that either and that directive did not come from them. They also told me to do the dances the way our leader wrote them.

Our leader was here tonight and she along with everyone else got to see C in her fine form. We were doing one dance and while I am teaching it C is talking over me saying "She's doing it back wards, it's all backwards"..while I am teaching. She was right and I did correct that part, which led to the next disagreement. This one I let her and our leader discuss ..I did not say anything. When the leader agreed with me that that part was right, C left the dance, sat down and did not join us until we went on to the next dance. Basically having a little pout since she did not get her way.

Meanwhile I am thinking how bad this is and how it will probably be yet another mark against me. Remember this incident happened before the meeting. I did ask our leader if she could please tell r and rw what she observed tonight in practice. I figured that coming from someone who was there just one night would carry some weight because C's behavior was wrong.

R and rw told me they did not want me to second guess every move all the time as that is frustration and it is not good for me or for worship. Nor is it helping my confidence.

So I was surprised and pleased at how it went. I might also add that when we left...an hour after practice was over, guess who was sitting in her car waiting to say her peace.

I can only hope now that we have had an impartial observer see her antics, that eyes will be opened. They also told me that a couple of people have gone to them and asked how they could make things easier for me because they saw or sensed what has occurred. I didn't say it but my thought was "Tell her to knock it off and we won't be having these problems!"

R and rw told me they were sorry for what I have been through and that they don't want me having all this angst. Our leader told me she is on my side and will support me no matter what.

So that's how it went.

Narnia, I am so glad that it is finally starting to work out.

Yesterday was a beautiful June day, and today looks like another one. Took the kids to the optometrists yesterday. Caleb has light prescription for reading and computer, Sarah and Rebekah have even lighter prescriptions. I LOVE out eye plan that we have. We get a free exam and frames and lenses every year. What a blessing. If we want spiffy lenses like with Timothy, they cost more, but he is the only one that really needs them. Well, I am probably going to be getting bifocals next time and that will cost extra, but it doesn't cost much compared to what we are saving. I am just so grateful.... I remember when we had to buy Timothy's glasses out of pocket and being concerned about keeping him in them from year to year.

My mother and father-in-law are here! they got here last night. We are all so happy!

Bagel, Ds did that once when he was little and when the police showed up, Ds told him that he wanted to see if they were really there. He never called 911 again unless we had a real emergency!

Narnia, I am glad that the truth has finally surfaced!

Ellie, Have a good visit!

Saturday the fairground is having a free small animal care workshop. Can I count that for biology?
Next weekend it's going to be large animals, you know lions, elephants, OK, it's really going to be a circus.

Want to know what was just on the news? A teacher was convicted of having you know what with 2 boys- 16 and 17. Want to know her sentence? 90 days in jail and 5 years probation... If that would have been my teenage boy, I doubt if she would have got as far as going to court if you know what I mean!! I guess that's what happens when you entrust your teens to the "professionals".

Narnia, it sounds like the air was cleared quite a bit. I'm glad that things went so well at the meeting.

Hi Sarah!

Narnia, That is amazing. I am so glad to hear how things went. I hope this improves how things go at the dance practice and during worship.

Hi Sarah! Glad to see you're still with us!

It is beautiful outside today, naturally. I'm working. It's also supposed to be nice tomorrow, though, and I'm off the next 3 days. Melissa is going to continue to feel better (only a fairly mild headache today, PTL!) and we are going to work at getting our gardens in. We'll work at my house one day and hers the next. Our poor plants are looking rather sad - they needed to be transplanted a couple of weeks ago but the weather hasn't cooperated.

Cindy, How many days do you work a week? How many hours a week? I am glad I don't have a job outside the home, I don't know how I'd manage doing that and trying to homeschool like many of the moms here.

My garden is coming up. I planted a few seeds and wasn't sure if they'd acually come up or not. I don't have much confidence in my gardening. My starts are doing okay, but MM stepped on one of them and broke it completely off at the ground when she was mowing the lawn. I told her not to step in the garden box again. She said she couldn't help it. I told her that she would have to move the mower differently as stepping in my garden is not an option. I think it was the first time she had used the lawn mower, so I can understand.
