I'm a diabetic, so I can't have the candy they sell anyway. I sometimes take in a snack-size Zip-Loc bag filled with sugar-free Hershey's and Reese's if I'm in the mood for something sweet, or Weight Watchers snack bags of pretzels, chips, etc. I simply tell the people what's going on and why; no one's ever kicked before. I've even carried in my 24 oz., freshly filled, thermal coffee mug before. Now that's one thing that I wish they'd start serving at the concession stands - coffee. I'd gladly pay the price they would ask for it - I do it at Starbuck's! To me, nothing is better than sipping on hot coffee, while watching a movie with my lovely wife. Ahhhhh!!! Pure bliss!

I don't sneak candy into the theatre.

When I was pregnant with our first child we went to the movies. I was close to due date and about to blow up.

I drank water all the time, so when we got there I wanted to get a bottle of water. They didn't sell water, so I asked to buy a cup so that I could fill it at the drinking fountain. They said no, they weren't allowed to do that.

So I asked for the manager, because I couldn't imagine he would refuse to allow an about to blow up pregnant lady to buy a cup. He refused. He said I could have the cup if I paid the full soda price. So I asked again, just to be sure I understood him and he understood me, and yup--he still refused.

He claimed it was because of accounting--at the end of the night they add up their cups and they know what's missing and that's how they tally their drinks, and it would mess up their system.

We do have a graet theatre near us called The Angelika....that shows primarily "art films"....they have a full coffee bar, the BEST popcorn in town (with UNLIMITED refills), good food....AND, a FULL bar for 'adult beverages'....all at "relatively" normal theatre prices....

when we went to see "Rachel Getting Married" there, I had a bit of a cold or something that day, so I opted to get a latte instead of the standard soda & popcorn.....and THAT "hit the spot"....was feeling better by the time we left.

Concessions are a massive rip-off, but they are also usually the only way that theaters make any money. So I always buy popcorn and soda from the smaller art theaters I frequent (and yes, they usually have a wider selection: i.e. coffee, lattes. etc). I just see it as a contribution towards keeping them in business in our area.

But I rarely ever buy concessions from large chain theaters. They don't need it.

I want to say something funny, but true.
Years ago, (when I was married), we went with the 'redneck ' neighbors to see 'Tommy Boy'. (Very funny movie, BTW).

Anyway, the girls say"Lets stop at the store for some snacks". I'm thinking "No" because I know them. Sure nuff, their purses are LOADED with everything from Soda pop bottles to nuts to candy bars. So I'm feeling a little uncomfortable, as they pull out the soda and poor it into cups, Ripping open all kinds of snacks. She even said,"Ya, we bring KFC in to eat sometimes".

I go out in the hall to recover for a few, and 'redneck mama' comes out and starts looking for a cup, IN THE GARBAGE. So I'm thinking "Good Lord, she getting a cup for her soda".

Ends up, she needed a cup to spit out her pistashio shells.

Kind of funny 20+ years later....

I think the only people that has a problem with bring your own is the Manager. I refuse to pay $4 for a pack of M&M's. Don't they know the prices of food everywhere else? The guy who sets the prices must live in there and not get out at all. They need to take a walk down to the shops.

One time my brother told me when we were planning to go was that they banned any outside food so I wore my cargo pants with extra big pockets to hide the food. I was able to hide a big bag of M&M's, a bag of Starbursts, and a 1.25 litre bottle of Vanilla Coke in those pants. When the lights dimmed I emptied my pockets and my brother and his friends were like "What the heck? Where did all that come from?". I found out it was just a rumour and I could have just brought the food in without trying to hide it.

Another time my mate took a plastic shopping bag full of stuff in and they told him he couldn't take it in so I had to stand there waiting for him to return the stuff from his car. When he came back in he looked like a pregnant dude. When we finally got to our seats and sat down he pulled bags of food and drinks out of the pockets in the top he was wearing. Its amazing the amount of food you can smuggle into the cinema's. I guess it depends on who the Ticket dude or the Ticket chick is ripping the ticket and doing the inspection before you go in.

One time my husband, my daughter and her husband and I went to a movie at a "Dollar Theatre". Four humongous people came in and sat behind us. They opened all kinds of snacks during the entire movie, including pop cans and all kinds of bags. They munched, smacked, laughed and talked and it was horrible to be in front of them. It was aggravating all of us and I turned and gave them a couple of dirty looks, to no avail. Then to break the tension, my son-in-law said that they were probably going to break out the grill and barbeque some burgers and hot dogs in a minute and we broke up in hysterical laughter! Guess the people in front of us was totally frustrated! That was the worst that I have ever seen!

When the movie was over, they carried out a couple of baby diaper bags - empty, needless to say.

??? Diaper bags??? ...What did ya mean on that part?

As for the talking, I do hate that as well. I also do hate when people bring all kinds of snacks in that aren't allowed and leave a mess and eat and laugh and talk it up.

I've been in those situations and you can ask the usher to request those people quiet down. Just go to the front lobby and ask for an usher or theatre manager and tell them the issue. You can pretend you're gonig to the restroom, so they won't know....or tell the usher or supervisor person to wait a while before going in to confront the rowdy group, so they won't think it's you who told....or if you don't care they know, then it won't matter. You can even tell them they brought in illegal foods (if the particular theatre doesn't allow it). .....

I think the more "ghetto" the theatre location is the more crazy stuff I've seen. .....We do have the right to enjoy the movie without other people's disturbances.......

I took it to mean that they hid the food in diaper bags.

As for me, I don't go out of my way to bring food into a theater, but if I happen to have an Atomic Fireball in my pocket, I wouldn't feel bad about eating it during the movie.

I get low blood sugar at weird times and always carry emergency candy. Eat it at church, movies, museums. Otherwise they'd have to pick me off the floor. Also don't see anything wrong with bringing food to a movie. It's not illegal.

I remember going to see a James Bond movie in the 80's. It was in one of those $.99 theaters. This was in my drinking days and we brought in a small bottle of Jim Beam. Well, wouldn't you know it, we finished it, put it down on the floor and during a quiet moment in the movie, my friend accidentally KICKS IT. Do you know how loud an empty booze bottle sounds rolling down in a theater? YIKES

Rarely. I normally buy popcorn because I love it. I often buy a 500ml drink and keep it in my handbag.

If the theaters didn't charge as mentioned $4 dollars for a candy bar,and the same for a beverage,+popcorn they would not have to be worried about people importing candy in the theaters. We already pay too much to watch the movie in the first place. (nearly $20 for two people). I remember when Star Wars came out *1977 the admission was $1.75,and the food was not far from the price of it at the stores. I would guess that they rely on the concessions (sp) as a huge part of their income.

My wife and I went to see "Up" a few weeks ago at a nearby AMC theatre. In the process of buying our snacks (and we usually let our movie snacks take the place of a meal), the girl at the concession stand steared us to a "special", where you can get a large popcorn and two large drinks for a fairly low price ($12, I think it was). This saved me about $8, cause I was going to get mediums for me and smalls for the wife, which would have been $20 or so. She was also happy to let us have an extra bag to share the popcorn in (I like more butter than my wife does). With the free refills, this was more than enough to keep us snacking through the entire movie, and I didn't feel quite so "taken" by the high prices.

I brought food in to the movies this weekend, in plain sight. If they would be willing to provide relatively healthy snacks I'd be happy to buy them. Until then, I will bring in a granola bar and an apple, so as to resist the temptation of snacking on my husband's extra-buttery popcorn.

LOL, it's true. My aunt Vicki would ALWAYS have happy meals for us somehow hidden in her purse, along with the drinks in those paper cups. You'd just be sitting there watching the previews, when my aunt would start passing down the fries, then the burgers, and even the toys. haha
