I took the SAT in high school and got about a 1280. Then I took a Kaplan course, and sat through 10 weeks of mind-numbing boredom, churning out problem after problem. When I took the test a second time, it was a walk in the park and my score increased roughly 300 points.
Just practice, practice, practice, until it's mind-numbingly boring. Then you're ready.

One caveat is that they're also a little expensive. My suggestion would be to get the Kaplan books first, study out of them, and when you feel ready, take the exam. Since the GRE only reports your highest score, you only need to take the Kaplan course if your score still isn't high enough.
