Three years ago I attended satellite company xyz retailers conference. There were many key note speakers. One of them made the comment to us as business owners "Do not let your computers make you stupid."
Today my installer stands on the front porch of a house that is at least 10 yrs old. After working for many hours to install a satellite tv system he is unable to activate the system for the customer because xyz satellite company says that google earth says, “there is not a house at that address”.
And yes, I am serious.

Computers are a tool, they make a lot of jobs easier.

Management can be blamed though for problems, like your satellite system installer in regards to not having a procedure or training on what to do if there is a mistake or the system is down.

Look at it this way, you are saving money by not having it on anyway...

Free TV, the only way to travel...

No no you missed it giggles, lol. Experienced installer. We have to call in the activations to an activation center. The activations center would not activate it because the new proceedures involve looking on google earth to see if a house actually exist.
My point was that sometimes we lose our common sense by depending on technology too much. Like the cashere that cannot give you change because a malfunctioning register doesnt say how much to give.
To add to my frustrations, today I had a potiential customer come in and want satellite. I run his information through and he is not in the mega computer database. Therefore I get an error message from xyz satellite, "Please inform person we cannot offer them service." Translation: tell the person standing in front of you that they do not exist, they cannot have satellite TV, and to please go away. There is no override for these systems. If the database says you don't exist, then you don't exist. This person cannot even pay cash and have a system activated. This happens a lot!
(Side note: There are only two satellite companies in the nation. It's one of them!)

Oh yeah that's what I meant, when our computers are down no one knows what to do - since very few places have procedures for an emergency. When the powers out the places close.

You shouldn't have planted grass on your roof. Then Google Earth could have seen you. [:D]

Well then you don't have to pay the bill.[;)]

actually it's not computers that make a person stupid...it is the Information Technology (IT) department that, in the interests of "security" and "time saving," program the computers with all sorts of things to make sure that the non-IT crowd has their hands tied.

Hey, don't offend Miss Giggles who I believe works in IT. Although she does not care to ever answer me, I will defend a person when then time calls for it regardless. [sm=biggrin.gif]

We don't make the policies. The policies are set by management or HR. Management most of the time is NOT technical. Read Dilbert? Its funny because its true (and sad). Add in a union or the government and it just gets worse.

Unfortunately the IT department has to lock stuff down because people will do anything to their pcs, from watching porn out in the open, outright losing laptops, cell phones , to gambling, etc, etc. Then there are the users who think they are geeks and "fix" stuff and totally crash their pc. You can make them sign all usage policies and do training and it all goes in one ear and out the other.

^^^^I know...we just get frustrated sometimes with the rules imposed and IT is the front line when it comes to enforcing them, so they get the brunt of the displeasure. Ironically I'm often the one defending IT in my workplace.

I work in a place where someone with NO scientific background decided that all of our work could be done with a small number of programs and if we need to add a program, we have to get it conditionally approved, then another program has to be removed...so if someone in another department requests a program, someone with no knowledge of how the software works decides that this new program does about the same thing as a currently approved program...so suddenly a piece of software you've been using for years is removed from your system with no warning and replaced with this other thing...and if the other thing doesn't work for your application, you have to go through the approval process again....

I agree with this. Although the cashier who cannot make change without the cash register...THAT is a function of a failed educational system or failure to train than the fault of the technology.

PixieSunBelle -> RE: Computers make you stupid. (6/28/2009 1:12:00 AM)

People are not taught to do their jobs when the system is either flawed or failed.
If a person clearly exists... then their should be an override. Technically, who cares if a person wants satellite in a place where a home is not? As long as they are paying they should be able to get service... haha why you would, I don't know... but hey, to each his own.
Clearly, with that mindset xyz satellite will lose customers and perhaps they will learn the hard way.

APZR -> RE: Computers make you stupid. (7/15/2009 1:59:29 PM)

If I was the owner of the retail store and the satellite company said they can't provide service, tell the customer to go away... I'd be signing up to sell the OTHER satellite company's service. [;)]

Oh man, I can't believe it. That's absolutely ridiculous! It just goes to show you, I'm right when I say "you can't believe everything that's on the Internet."
