Graduates...The Rolling Stones Were Right!
David Burchett - Author and Speaker

The Stones sang that “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” back in 1969. But for some reason we keep telling our children that they can and if not it is somebody else’s fault.

One of my favorite editorial writers is Rod Dreher of the Dallas Morning News. I usually agree with his views and that is likely a concern for Rod. I occasionally disagree with his columns and sometimes strongly. But I like Dreher’s articles because they are always thoughtful and graceful. He can state a strong opinion without being a divisive flamethrower. Sadly, that is becoming a lost art. His most recent column was another good one. Dreher wrote about those ridiculously hopeful graduation speeches. Here is the opening paragraph.

The bad news, high school graduates, is that you can't have it all. You aren't as free as you think you are. Sorry, but no matter what optimistic flapdoodle your commencement speaker tells you, that's the truth.

First of all, kudos for the use of “flapdoodle” in a sentence. The word dates back to 1833 and means “the stuff they feed fools on” or, if you wish to be kinder, nonsense. Dreher is right. You really can’t be anything you want. Shaquille O’Neal can’t be a jockey in the Kentucky Derby no matter how much he dreams or hopes. All the horses certainly hope that is true. I realize that there are things I simply cannot do. I will never be a rocket scientist unless they eliminate that pesky math requirement. Back to Mr.Dreher’s column.

What's more, unless you're an incurable romantic or an American politician, you eventually will learn that life is more tragic than you were led to believe. You will discover your own limits. You will fail at something, even if you succeed by the standards of the world. That failure may save you; success may destroy you.

Nobody really wants to hear that on graduation day but everyone needs to hear those truths at some point and hopefully early in the journey. If I were asked to speak to young grads (not likely) I would tell them some things I wish I had known at their age. I would talk about my faith so that would rule me out of most venues. And even if I got to speak I suspect there would be a lot of texting going on from a restless audience. But maybe a couple of them would hear some things that they will have to figure out eventually...

Read Dave's 7 "I wish I had knowns"...

Great list of "wish I had knowns" here.

What are some things you know now that you wish you had known in high school?

What a wonderful topic!!! There's so many things I wished I'd known, but to sum it up...
Life is filled with lots of turns and bums, but it's how you approach each situation and learn something from them.

I keep typing things, and I keep realizing I knew those things then.

But I also knew I was damaged so I waited for healing. College was a very healing experience. You can know things mentally, and not have the ability to turn them into action while the wound's still open.

I dunno, that was such a bad time for me.

So, I constantly daydreamed about this ideal life post high school.

But my life since has been difficult in a lot of ways too.

But I'm glad I didn't know that at the time. I would have done myself in if I had known that.

Cool thread.....

1. I wish I would have understood that you get out of each experience only what you put into it.

2. I wish I would have known that going to college was not the only option after high school.

3. I wish someone would have told me it was ok to not know what I wanted to be when I "grew up."

Oh, ditto. What a waste of my precious teenage time and what pointless heartache.

I wish I would've known that keeping my mouth shut was really best in most situations.

I would give anything to relive my teen years for God.I missed out on so much youth events, and etc simply since I thought living for God was uncool and not for me. I was backslidden throughout high school and am sorry for the poor example I was being a phony christian.

I wish I had known that Jesus Christ was real and not just a name to throw around in anger. I wish I had known about salvation through Him and just how amazing His love is.

Stella, yes! I was so desperately unpopular back then. There were quite a few in our school who killed themselves over breakups and other silly things. I contemplated suicide myself quite a bit with that very mature motivation "they will be so sorry when I am GONE!" God's provisions for me did NOT include suicide but I think of all of those kids who chose that path and it is so sad!!! My life is just exactly the OPPOSITE of how anyone would have predicted it would be back then. I was, truly, in all likelihood, headed toward drug addiction, single parenthood and minimum wage work. What I got was an education, travel, a real career, a dedicated/talented/wealthy husband, a beautiful home and the world's most amazing little daughters ! What a tragedy it would have been if I'd been able to follow up on my selfish plan of doing myself in.

God's plans for my life have never ceased to amaze me! I wish I'd have known what it is to trust in him!!! I would have been such a witness to those poor lost little souls around me!

So, in sum, I suppose I wish I'd had PERSPECTIVE. That's one of those things you just don't get without putting in some serious time first.

I wish I'd known that I was a beautiful child of God and deserved to be cherished by a man, not used by whoever would pretend to love me. I wish I'd known that sex isn't love and that I would never have the respect of a man who only wanted sex, not to adore and cherish me as a precious helpmeet.

I wish I'd known that I was up for several scholarships before I gave up on school and started smoking pot. By the time God woke me up to where I was, it was too late for the scholarships. I got back on the honor roll and dumped those "friends," but I didn't go to college until I was 25.

I wish I'd known that my dad was proud of me for having good grades and being a good daughter before I decided he didn't care and found the wrong crowd.

I wish I'd known that my sister's delinquency was her choice and my choice was to do what I was supposed to do, not that she was taking anything away from me. I wouldn't have spent years of my life resenting her for being an addict and a prodigal.

I wish I'd understood that the "Jesus Freaks," as we derisively called them, had the right idea all along.

I wish I knew how to be independent, find something that I was interested in and pursue it with a passion. Instead, I just kind of skated through everything.

That time would age us all, and even some of the jocks would get fat.

That those who were "popular" were probably the most unhappy people, and still are.

I wish I would have been happy with who I was and not tried to be someone else.

I wish I had known then that my parents would ALWAYS love me. I would have told them more, and asked for advice more.

That my parents were right more often then they were wrong.

That I was not invincible.

And most importantly, that God really, really, really loved me and I didn't need to seek that love anywhere else.

I wish I had known that not everyone didn't like me and not everyone I thought was a snob actually was one. This thread reminded me of an occasion a few years ago when I was in a shopping mall. One of the store clerks greeted me enthusiastically, as though she were really glad to see me, and reminded me of who she was. I remembered her then as one of the popular people when I was in high school. I had written off all popular people as snobs and would not give them the time of day. I wondered, in a self-satisfied kind of way, why this upper crust girl was now working in a mall when I, the lowly one, had a college degree. I then remembered that I remembered nothing at all unkind that this girl had ever done, and only kindness from her. I had to wonder--who was the real snob?

I wish I'd've known how much more I would have learned about real life had I chosen to read biographies and other nonfiction in class and during Chapel than I did reading Sidney Sheldon, Stephen King, Judith Krantz, V.C. Andrews... As a matter of fact, it's a wonder I'm even sane. I can't say that I would have tried harder in school- you could graduate from my school while in a deep coma.

I also wished I'd've known about homeschooling- I would have finished high school in about 6 months and headed for college at the earliest opportunity.

It would have been nice to know that life was not going to be The Breakfast Club forever, no matter how many movies attempt to portray high school as the end-ball be-all of life.

I wish I'd known to care more about affecting other people and less about how other people affected me.

Wow, that was a great article. I had the list that the author made pretty well down in High School, Except for the one about choosing your friends carefully (#6). It wasn't because I wanted to be cool or popular. There were times I hung out with people just because they talked to me. With #5 I knew that I needed to take responsibility for my actions. I was terrified of making poor choices, and had trouble not beating myself up (for sometimes years afterwards) and letting it go.

I wish that I had truly appreciated how easy it was for me to memorize back then.

I wish that i had known that I had the right and ability to protect myself from abuse., and to expect others to help me.

I wish that I had known that God had a life planned for me that was way better than anything that I had envisioned or dreamed of.

I wish that I had known that (academically speaking) I would have better of dropping out of school at 16 and getting a GED before I forgot all the things that I had learned in the Christian school.

I wish that I had known (like Sunnymom) to not put things in my head that didn't measure up to Philippians 4:8.

I have to completely agree with this one! If I'd realized this I wouldn't have ended up thinking that only one boy in the entire world would ever like me and ended up getting pregnant at seventeen and so on, and so forth! But I can't say I regret having my children; they are a blessing.
