creationtalk -> How do I stop doing this? (6/6/2009 3:07:29 PM)

I work with a great crew. The team handles high pressure, fast turn-around technical stuff on a regular basis. This past week we had something come in that was high interest. I was able to get a little bit of extra information about the project--more than is usually available, so as a senior (as in been there longest) person I did an analysis in addition to the one that was put out by the regular crew then handed it off to the person who was preparing that analysis and made some suggestions on format of the information--how to present it. Anyway at a big meeting on Thursday the head of the organization we "work for" (it is not our company, but we work under their direction most of the time) said that it was the best analysis he had seen from our department. I tried to use that occasion to point out that we are understaffed--said that the analysis would not have worked without both of us working on it. I meant that the analysis could not have happened if we had only an analysis working on it--we needed the scientific/technical side as well. Unfortunately what was heard by my coworkers was that the analyst that worked on that project and me were the only ones who could do the job. I was trying to show management that they need to stop pulling all the qualified scientists out of our department and assigning them to other branches and we need to build up the analyst group. However, my coworkers felt that I undermined them in front of all of our bosses--on both sides of the job. I've apologized to 2 of them and will apologize to the others on Monday when I see them again, but even though they've forgiven me, I want to make it right and I want to stop doing this (I HATE meetings...I'd much rather communicate using email or another written format where I can reread everything to make sure it communicates the intended message).
