I have a picture in my head of what each character looks like, and sounds like, but it's not an actor. I also have pictures of their homes, etc. in my mind. I was surprised in another book discussion when I found out most other readers don't visualize inside their head.

Yikes! You mean there are many people who don't see what they read? I'm surprised, too. I not only see, but hear, feel, and sometimes smell or taste everything... even if that much information isn't given. I read "Edward stepped onto the boat," for example, and I hear the creak of boards and the sound of wind and water, smell the lake or ocean, and feel the difference in air temperature and the movement of a suddenly unstable walking surface. I read "Sally climbed the stairs," and I hear her footsteps, feel the tension in her muscles, and (depending on the context) feel nervous or weary or claustrophobic. This is why I can't read romance novels.

I don't usually see the characters as actors, though--I don't watch enough movies to be familiar with very many of them. I don't need movies; I can only hear and see them, and only in a little flat space. The books are real!

That doesn't just go for stories, either; I read an email from a friend and mentally see that friend's face and hear that friend's voice. Nonfiction books get at least a generic voice that matches the gender of the author. I did tell all this to one friend who was pretty surprised that I got so much out of printed words. I just thought my friend didn't read enough to pick everything up--I didn't know that that was common.

I guess I would say that I get pretty into nearly everything I read; thankfully, I read fast, so I don't have to live in any of the books too long. Does anybody know what I mean?

This book is one of my favorite, "RABBIT PROOF FENCE" It's a true story happened during 1930s in Australia. During that time, the colony authority wanted all the mixed kids to go to their settlement to learn their behaviors. Three mixed girls were forced to send to that area, about 1600 miles away from their home. However, they escaped the settlement and determined to go back to their family by walking 1600 miles along the rabbit proof fence (it's in the desert area thought).
At times, I could picture myself in that situation, the determination and courageous spirit of three little kids (about 10-14 years old), where did they get it from? Truly they love who they are!
So if the kids could be so determined just to value themselves, why not we as Christians?

The story also has the form of DVD, it's a very good drama, you will really like it.

God bless!

No, but I have read so hard that when I stopped at the end of the chapter I literally could not remember who I was, what my name was, what my life was like...nothing. Then I'd start to panic a bit. Once it even took me 10 minutes for it all to come back.

Wow, Auben! What was the name of THAT book? I'm very curious to know.

Probably the closest I came to the involvement you describe is when I read Crime and Punishment. I do not ever recall being drawn into a character (Raskolnikov's) which led me to pulling for him to do this or that--very odd. It's like the author, Dostoyevsky, knew what he was doing. I nearly felt manipulated in pulling for Raskolnikov in spite of his evil crime.

I'm not sure I answered the question properly, but this book quickly came to mind when I saw the forum thread.

Most people "don't" do this??? That happens to me with pretty much every book I read, even some theological/commentary books. I've never thought it odd.

^ yep that

I get so lost in a book, that I lose all track of time, just like I do here in forums. I'd be reading and someone would try to talk to me, but it's like they're annoying background noise that I try to ignore, unless it's important.

same... i can have short conversations with people and not even remember it. I tell my kids all the time if they happen to ask me a question when i'm reading... make sure that i look you right in the eye, otherwise i'm probably on auto pilot. One of the reasons that i try to only read at bedtime these days.

i guess i just get so immersed that everything else just fades away temporarily.

I'm the same way, I usually will ignore people when I am ingrossed in a good book, Buy if I have to respond my family knows to make sure I am "There"

I am still in the process going through the new book I just got, titled "The Girl In The Picture." War could be very damaging, not only in the way of infrastructure, social society, public services, but mainly the minds of the innocent citizens.

If you see the cover of the book, this little Vietnamese girl was naked, you could tell from her face with panic, helplessness, etc. The effect of any war could be very negative, it may take decades to bring people back to the normal settings.

During my staying in the post-war country, that's how people behave there, their minds are all about destruction, rather than build!

The closest I've ever gotten to that was falling asleep while I was reading a book and dreaming I was in the story. I kinda expect it to happen more often than it does, considering I always read before bed and almost always fall asleep with a book in my hands. :P
