I bought a 1972 Chevy Nova in 1980...I was 16. Paid 300 bucks for it...still miss it!

1976 Chevy Silverado crew cab dually pickup. I was 22. Paid $4500 for the truck and a 4-horse trailer.

I bought an '85 Chevy Blazer when I turned 16 in 1996 (well, my parents paid half and I paid half). I think it cost about $3,000 and it wasn't worth that  My dad got tired of having to pick me up on the side of the road whenever the car would randomly die, so my parents upped the amount of money they would give me to $2,500, provided I match that.
I bought my second car, a '94 Jeep Cherokee when I was 17 for $7,000. It, too, died on the side of the road, not to be revived and once again, my dad was the one to come rescue me. At least it survived until 2006 before falling apart

in 2005 my parents bought me a 2000 jeep wrangler. its yellow and only had 19,200 miles on it at the time. it was a lake house vehicle. i was 16. i've still got it and it's pretty much the best.

I got my first car a 1959 Plymouth Fury after I got out of the Navy in 67, four door and drank gas like I drink water. But still a good car. no don't really miss it.

1996 Honda civic, I worked all summer at my parents coffee shop for tips only, and they bought me the car at the end of the summer. I think it was in the $5k range back in 2003, it was a lovely little car.
The first car that *I* bought was a 2000 Nissan Xterra for about $10.5k in 2006, although DH and I bought it together.

I turned 16 in 2001, and my first car was a red 1991 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme that my Dad lent to me.
I grew up as a middle-class kid in a rather wealthy suburb of Chicago and my classmates made fun of me for driving the Cutlass. They said I should grow a beard and offer candy out of the car to young kids late at night. Or put a sleeping bag in the back and live out of it. Or they would joke that if I got pulled over by the cops for speeding and they saw the address on my license, they would assume it was a fake. One of my friends even named the car, "The Clunker."
But I had $15K in the bank that I had saved up from mowing lawns since I was in third grade. I took that money and used it to buy a two-year-old Mustang. After that, the kids who made fun of me got laughed at for driving Lexuses. Still, it was a foolish financial move. Had I put the money in the stock market, or a Roth IRA, I'd have been able to pay for a semester or two of grad school.

Ford Mustang, a 1967. I was 15 and it was 1974. My mom gave it to me, when she bought herslef a new car.
I've been driving for 35+ years, am on my fifth car and all of them have been given to me.

When I turned 16, I bought a 1984 Mitsubishi Cordia in 1986 for $6000. My parents gave me $2500 for it in 1990 and sold it to someone else who needed a car. It was a very good car.

Mine was a 1967 Camaro SS with a 327 cu in, 210 horse power, V8 engine. I paid about $1800 in 1972 when I was 20.
I got my first speeding ticket driving it at 80MPH in a 60MPH zone - without realizing I was going that fast.

yea you really had it rough kid, how did u ever survive that horror?
I had a 1963 Nash Rambler that I worked all summer cutting my grandfather's grass for.
4 door , inline 6, i think Mitt Romney has a collectors edition.
And my friends were cool, we didn't base things on what people drove or how well to-do they were. Guess NY is different than the midwest.
And yet you operated dangerous lawn equipment while in elementary school and making $1600 a year cutting grass, wow very commendable , and even somewhat miraculous.
Yep stock market is better than cars, long term anyways.

My first car was a 1965-ist Toyota Coralla coupe with a two speed automatic for $1100 in the winter of 1970. Slick looking but a dog. The next fall I traded up to a 1967 Toyota Land Cruiser. Now that was a machine! I loved it; noisy(like riding in a tin can!), leaked inside and out(fiberglass top), cold in the winter, hot in the summer(token heater no A/C), like driving a bucking bronco(short wheelbase), murder on tires(heavy) and lousy gas mileage(15 mpg on a good day but at less then a quarter a gallon .19 at times it didn't really matter)I reveled in it! Those days are gone forever.

Funny to think we have 4 cylinder engines now that generate more HP than that. That was a pretty fast car back then.
My VW I think had about about 65 HP which barely qualifies as a motorcycle engine now.

My first car was a 66 Blue Mustang - excellent condition - I bought in 1977 for $1,500.
My best friend had a 64 1/2 Mustang...very cool...

1970 VW Bug, $1200. Bought in 1973, and drove it until 1978 or 1979. It was a great car. Cost me $2.50 to fill er up when I bought it. When the gas crunch hit in 1974, it doubled to $5.00.

Hehe! I was very blessed as a kid! I grew up in a really safe neighborhood in the suburbs, got a great education, and learned some of the ropes of hanging out with the upper-middle class and the rich.

Wait... did you grow up in upstate NY or in Chicago? I grew up on the Chicago North Shore, but it probably has just as much in common with the San Fran or NYC suburbs as it does with Watertown, WI. The rich kids can still be just as obnoxious! :D

My Dad was baling hay and operating a tractor at age 9, so he didn't cut me an inch of slack and always kept reminding me how easy I had it!

It might have felt differently over the past 9-10 years, but usually, the stock market isn't a wasting asset. Still if I had taken that $15K and put it into the DJIA in mid-2001, I'd have about $13-15K today and I'd have saved another $5K in the difference in insurance costs over the past several years.
