hello everyone so here it goes , I'm 17 and i will be a senior in high school next year . i get average grades
and lately i have been wondering what i have been wanting to do when i get out of high school. My dad wants me to go to college like my brother did so i can get a good job and makes lots of money . But in all honesty money isn't important to me . I want to find something that i love doing and not something that i hate even if I'm making lots of cash.i have been considering going into the military probably air force , when i graduate next year . and using my GI bill after the four years and going to a nice four year college . I don't really want to go to college after high school because I'm sick of this small town i live in , i want to see the world , i hate school , and i also want to go find the love of my life and i don't think i will find her where I'm currently at . I just want to find a good christian women that i love and settle down and have a family . I'm not looking to make tons of money because i know money doesn't buy happiness . Any advice from some older men out there for a young guy like me ?

I can't really speak for the military option, but I recommend choosing a field that you enjoy. Many people opt for the higher-paying "boring" jobs, and I think many eventually regret that. Trade schoola, etc, are also much cheaper than the traditional 4 years. Depending on your field, skill may trump education too. (where portfolios come into play, rather than where you graduated from)

Just for perspective, I went to 2 years of a Bible college and then transferred to a school for Graphic Design. (actually, none of the credits went over, so "transferred" is probably a bad term for it) While I wouldn't trade those first 2 years for anything, the actual career training I received only took 18 months. (though was quite a kick in the butt)

Listen to your dad.

It is *your* life and ultimately you should be the one to make the decision of what to do with it. But if you have the opportunity and academic ability for college I think you should seriously be considering it. Especially if your dad is willing to foot the bill for it.

Just how much older do you have in mind? Is 72 old enough? I enjoyed your post because it brought back memories of my days of being 17 years old.

It's very common for a guy of your time in life to feel exactly as you do. That urge to get out a see the world is something that comes naturally. Many guys join the military and it gives them a chance to see the world. I'm not sure which of the services offers the best opportunity. I know the Marines are the most dangerous followed by the Army. The Navy is good and can be dangerous. The Air Force is the easiest of the services, unless you are a pilot. That could be very dangerous. I'm not sure how much support personnel the Air Force uses. Much of that portion is contracted out.

Joining any of the services would be a way of getting to see the world. But let me give you a clue. Don't go looking for the love of your life. They don't come well that way. That person can crop up without warning and usually does. So be open on that.

You know there's lots of colleges out there. Certainly you could move out of town and go to college somewhere else, even if it means getting a job too. As long as you stay within your own state then the fees are less though.

If you do decide to go into the military, make sure to get training in a field that transfers well into the private sector after you get out. There's not much call for Combat Engineers and Sonar Techs on the outside, for some bad examples. Even if it's not your dream job, it could be something valuable to fall back on.

It doesn't hurt to wait for college if you have no idea where you'll be taking it. Although if you do meet the dream girl, get married and have kids, then it makes it more difficult to go to college later.

I'm 67 and like the poster above said you are at the age when there are no end to the questions you have. I would say, unless you know for sure what you want to do, and can find a good school to attend then go for the military. Which brance is really your choice. I was in the Navy, and it was good, I did see some of the world and loved going to sea. However, I realize it's not for everyone, and I did see some unhappy men while in the Navy. Some didn't like bging on a ship, others didn't like going to sea, some didn't like the jobs they were doing. Others were there because they had to be, and were there only to dodge the draft which was up and going when I was your age. Anyway, you have a year to decide. But like mentioned above, get training and in some field that you can use when you separate from the military. Also if you can use the GI Bill do so to go on to higher education. As for the love of your life. Wait awhile on that until you have you feet under you, and are secure in your job, and can provide for a family.

If you didn't have to worry about making money, what would you choose to do with your time?
