I know a lot is said today concerning 'the horrible public school condition' we-U.S.-is in. Also that parents should do more home-schooling and pour parents should send their kids to Christian Schools. but I just want to say, "I am an 4th grade public school teacher and proud of it ! I am a dedicated Christian & I believe that if more dedicated Christians were in the public school system then the public schools wouldn't be the way they are - in some places that is........Just thought I'd pass those thoughts along!

Thanks for posting Indianaguy47670! I am so thankful that there are wonderful Christian teachers in the public schools. My public schooled children have had some awesome Christian teachers over the years.

My kids have had Christian teachers, and I have a couple of Christian friends who are public school teachers. They are out there, and I am very thankful for it.

Thanks Indianaguy! Thanks for being one of those 4th grade teachers that I think I would love having teaching my kids! Of the top of my head I could name for sure at least a dozen committed Christian teachers in our elementary school alone. Ones that I would not hesitate whatsoever to ask them to pray for me, my kids, our family or whatever issue was happening at the moment. I know of 5 that would immediately on the spot, take a moment to pray WITH me. I know of one teacher although she retired this year and was at a different school this year that would spend at least a few moments praying for each of her students by name every morning. I walked in on her one morning 7 years ago when my eldest was in her classroom and found her walking around the room touching the chair of each child and praying quietly. It was quite moving in fact!
Anyway - from one very appreciative parent (also in Indiana) thank you!

I think there is a misunderstanding in this post that I'd like to clear up. I know quite a few families that homeschool while one parent works as a teaching in the public school system. I don't know of any homeschool parents that think adults should not teach in the public school system. I've only heard from people who are glad that our Christian brothers and sisters are taking salt and light into the public schools. So please do not feel that your homeschooling brothers and sisters are not behind you and praying for you in your job. Many of us are. I am glad you are teaching in a public school and that you are dedicated to Christ. Praise the Lord for teachers like you.
The second thing I wanted to clear up about your post is that many people believe that children need to be taught by adults and to develop in their Christian walk and understanding of Christian principles. Many of us homeschool because we believe that children need to have a biblical foundation to their learning and that it is much different than sending an adult into the school to teach children who may or may not be Christians. This does not mean that we have anything against teachers like you who are doing a wonderful thing in the schools.
May the Lord bless you in your job and may His light shine through you.
Just as an aside, In the fall, my 15 yo dd will be attending a public school part time. It is a vocational high school. She is enrolled to begin an office careers class to learn computer skills, so I am now the parent of a public school student.

I was told by a mom that if her kids taught, it would only be in a private, denomination based, school. She went from private to cyberschooling. But, it wasn't an indictment of my kids not going that route.
I was told by an HS mom that I had to HS to save my kids from the awful things they would be taught in school, and heard things that weren't true. (specifically, I was told that DeeDee would be weighed every day in front of everyone)
I had one tell me that it was ok to send my daughter to elem school, but I should pull her out of High School, and pull my son immediately because they don't teach boys at all. My son is currently second in his class.
I agree with the OP, the more Christians there are (not just teaching either) the better a place, an opportunity, as system will be. We show Christ to others thru our actions. Why would we only show Him to believers? We are commanded to go forth, not stay in.

This problem extends beyond the scope of just primary and secondary educations. Modern evangelical Christianity has done much to segregate itself from many facets of our culture including music, art, film, academia, journalism, and science. Instead of being involved and interacting with the institutions of the rest of society, we've essentially created a parallel subculture with sanitized, "Christian" versions of everything. Instead of challenging ourselves by engaging other people of different beliefs, we stay safe in our Christian schools, studying Christian textbooks, reading news from Christian news organizations, watching Christian movies, and listening to Christian music with our Christian friends.
You can't have the sort of paranoid delusions that momma_bee described without abject ignorance. That ignorance stems, in part, from believing what other people tell you and not having any experiences of your own.

Thank you, Indiana Guy -- and Amy, too. It is a 'mission field' and a ministry to be sure.
I've heard all sorts of misconceptions about public schools (usually from hs parents or those who are considering hs). As a parent whose children have been in public schools for their entire school career, the teachers who are Christians in that setting are wonderful. My son's health teacher and biology teacher were Christians (they self-identified; those are usually the 2 subjects that are criticized by people). We have had various other teachers who were Christians, also.
I think that sometimes, people don't even know that my kids are in public schools (they usually ask if we homeschool--I have a lot of friends who homeschool), and they might make comments about the ps system. They aren't really wanting to engage in a conversation about schooling choices, at least most of the time.

All three options (public, private, home) are fine and dandy. I grew up attending public school from day 1 to 12th grade. In an environment that is not necessarily friendly to Christians, it makes you grow more than might otherwise have. If I could afford to send my daughters to Christian school I might because it is a stricter environment that would help her academically I think. Christian colleges are viewed as tougher academically also, though I don't necessarily agree with this.

Neither do I. Accreditation is often a big problem with some Christian colleges.

How refreshing! I think it's just wonderful that you have chosen to teach children in a public school setting. What better way to reach the lost?
Think how many children will grow up with fond memories of their 4th grade teacher...who's character reflected the heart of the Jesus.

Because they can play up the "we're more moral then those godless public schools" card. And yes, there's probably more competition amongst public schools. Plus public universities do get public assistance after all. Private schools (religious or not) pay for it all themselves.

many secular institutions receive money from teh government to subsidize the cost to the student/parent. that is why mnany secular schools are cheaper.

Because they're private. Most private schools charge more whether Christian or secular.

I don't know where this idea comes from that Christian schools are more expensive than secular schools. I've done quite a bit of research on colleges over the last 5 or 6 years, and the real dividing line is not Christian/Secular but Private/Public.

Good thread! My whole teaching career has been spent in the public schools because I thought of it as a mission field that God could really use me in (I spend a lot of time praying over the school and kids) and the salary. I am making about three times more money in the public school system than I would be at a Christian school here in CA. I interviewed and was offered a position at this school and I turned it down because I could not live on the salary they were offering.
