I pulled something similar one of the "Southern-Lady-To-An-All-Dominant-Male" techniques today. <grin> There is a preschool/kindergarten in the church building where I work. There was to be heavy-equipment construction here that would block their entrance, so I made detailed signs, telling the parents with their children which entrance to take (instead of their regular one). There were pictures, arrows, and words -- everything they needed to know. The teacher added bright orange tape, marking the way and added her own signs. So what did 2/3 of them do? Walk right through the trucks and other huge, heavy equipment with their tiny children, right by the signs, and into their normal entrance. Although there was a huge colored sign, pointing to the bell, some left the door and went in their normal entrance or stood silently at the door until someone exited, so they could get in. But the one who took the prize was one guy I watched wind his way through the heavy equipment, past all the signs, and into the normal entrance for the school. As she did with the other parents, she directed him to leave by the way he should have cme in. What did he do? He came up to my office and reamed me out for not making the exit clear -- the exit what has signs point toward it, the orange tape point the way, clearly marked -- two huge doors out to the parking lot. So he gives me a good griping. I stood there thinking things about him but just smiling as he goes on and on. "Have a nice day!" I say as he finally goes toward the door.

Go the dollar store and buy a box of pacifiers...the next time you have to smile through gritted teeth, just hand him a pacifier. That should take care of soggy diaper attitude.

ORIGINAL: GraceyGirl It's a lot we're stuck with frankly. I get the whole, "Man is king of the cave" thing - I really do. But, the days of being drug around by my hair are far gone. We're making progress - slowly. Boy(sorry, girl), when was this considered acceptable by Adonai's people. Maybe, I need to start a thread "So 2009 is half over, and men are still being stereotyped."

Well, Blue, I am married to a great man. I told him the other night that he is not the epitome of a husband, because the epitome would only indicate the standard by which men may be measured. Rather, he is the acme, the highest point. No, all men are not like the ones decried in this thread. Thank G-d!!!

ORIGINAL: doinkdom As for the military...yes, I can certainly agree with that aspect for the most part but it has nothing to do with being from the south. My brother is in the military, and he works with guys who strongly believe that women should not go to college (unless it's some sort of finishing school) and they should not work outside the home and never have authority over a man in any way. Can you imagine being a female coworker of such a man? Even if he did try to control his behavior around you, it would still creep into day to day interactions. My brother's wife is a civilian, but she was chastised for working outside the home (they did not have a child) because she is an officer's wife, and they should be at home. She took to telling people she was infertile because so many people harassed her about not having a baby yet. They now have a lovely little girl, but still.... the military is a culture all it's own. I spent many of my childhood years on military bases, and it definitely has it's ups and downs. Actually, before I had kids I worked in an office where one of the gentlemen was originally from Africa, and he had real trouble taking instructions from a female, but that's a whole 'nuther story.

Sideways, too well understood. Talked to someone about that this morning and going through it right now at work . . . .

When I went back to college and took French, everyone was required to attend tutoring sessions. The tutor at my scheduled time was a native African male. He couldn't tutor me, (I was older than him) because "in his country" this and "in his country" that. I finally had to go the language department and ask for another tutor. It was part of my grade, and part of the required coursework for which I was paying.
