I guess my question is, what are your thoughts and opinions on them? They lack in serious moral and family values but women love to watch them anyway. I grew up with them everyday because my mom watched them. Thirty years later, they are still going strong. In fact, I work with three lovely christian women and it is a hot topic around the water cooler! One spends her lunch at home so she can catch the young and the restless. One other, tapes the show "religiously" so she misses nothing either! I get quite a tickle out of them because I view them nothing more than smut on television. When you think the producers can not get more perverse or deviant, they do, and a new storyline is born. They go against just about everything Godly in my opinion. But, it is almost an addiction for some women, including christian women.I think we can all agree that the lives portrayed on these shows are NOT lives we would pick for our children. Yet, we watch em anyways. What's your thoughts, please?

I refuse to watch them.

I've seen too many women that just "have to" watch their show.
It becomes an unhealthy addiction.

Also, it would not be a good use of my time and in that respect would make me a poor steward of the time that God has given me.

Peace,
Anne

Yuck. Drama really gets on my nerves in real life, why would I want to watch awfully-written pretend drama?

I think they're stupidly hilarious!

"Oh Lars! I love you!" "I love you too, Scarlett but we can't be together. It would be wrong of us?"

"Why Lars, why!?" (as Scarlett throws herself dramatically into Lars arms).

"Because Scarlett, as much as I love you, I'm your grandfather. I just never told you."

(Scarlett sobbing) "But you don't look a day over 25!!!"

"That's because when I was in the War I had plastic surgery. My skin will never change and I will always look this young."

"Oh Lars! Kiss me one last time! I won't tell Mummy...your daughter!"

"Actually, your Mummy is my son. He used to be Zach."

*gasp* "I wondered why her name was Zacharina!"

Sorry! I had to stop! I'm laughing too hard!

As a former General Hospital junky I will say that it is easy to become addicted and you know you are when you actually start hating the fictional charactors!!! I peek in from time to time if the story is good, but I try and stay away. Bonnie Hunt is on @ 2 here and I really like her.

One day, almost 25 years ago, the Holy Spirit asked me if I wanted to be a lot less frustrated in life. I was living with a pervasive, constant sense of frustration. I said, "Yes". The Holy Spirit said, "Stop watching soap operas."

Then, in an instant, I understood how soap operas cause frustration and feed addiction to them. They never ever resolve. They constantly take you to a climax in the story, raising your adrenaline and then leave you hanging there at the end of every episode. That way you must come back the next day to find out what happens, only to find that it still isn't resolved. They drag it on and on until Friday when the ultimate climax of the storyline arrives only to leave you hanging until Monday.

I stopped watching them that day. Six months later, I was at a friend's house and the soaps were on. It took me 10 minutes to catch up on the storyline. Not much had really happened in 6 months. One year later, it took 20 minutes. It took over 5 years for the stories to change enough to where I couldn't catch up if I happened to get stuck somewhere that was playing the soaps.

That pervasive frustration disappeared and I was a lot more patient in general.

Hmmm... only really watch one soap, and that's a British one. What fascinates me is the way the community and families can support each other. It (together with another British soap) have brought major issues to peoples attention ~ incest, child abuse, mental health, HIV/AIDS, disabilities... I don't watch religiously because I sometimes find some of the storylines too dark so simply keep up through what it says in the tv guide.

As for wanting our children to live those lives ~ well, much can be learnt about morality from some soaps (money, alcohol and sex don't bring happieness) and, if I had children, I wouldn't want them watching much that's on tv, let alone living that kind of life ~ nor would I want them addicted to watching soaps ~ nor anything else on tv.

But then so many parents use the tv as a kind of babysitter, putting their children infront of the tv from an early age to watch childrens tv. The tv should be seen as a treat, not as an essential part of living.

When I was little, I used to dream that the house was on fire and Mother wouldn't leave until her soap was over

The only time I really watched a soap opera was when we were in Haiti, and there was a tv at a place we were staying one night (and electricity!), and I was just *glued* to it--it was in English, and it was the only thing that was in English. When we got home, I turned it on and couldn't stand it.

Although, I will admit to be addicted to House and NCIS, so I cannot say anything, really. Except I prefer stories that resolve in one or two episodes.

I do remember a secretary that we had once, that had a particular soap she watched every day. I walked into the kitchen, looked at the screen and said "That character is pregnant again?" Turned out it was the *same* pregnancy from a year and a half before. Longest human gestation on record, I suppose. Two years later the kid was in high school--I guess he grew up in utero

Not bad. The babies are usually coming home from college in two years.

I'll quit watching Days of Our Lives when Sammi gets the baby back that was stolen by Nicole.

She'll probably get the baby back when she's leaving for college. I'd say that could take awhile but it could also happen next week.

^^ true. Her other son, Will, grew 10 years in about 2. Then he changed from having black curly hair with a thin build to blondish/straight hair and a more solid build (different actors). So, anything's possible.

They're addictive. Easy to get into the story until you have to watch the next one, you have to find out what's happening next, and you can't miss it.

I think some of the shows really don't make much sense at all... and it feels like they're saying the same thing to each other after a while. And everything's so overdramatized.

I don't think I'd even know any of the names of American soaps. Here in the UK I watch Coronation Street (about life in the Manchester area) and The Bill (about the London police).

Amanda, your sops sound similer to the ones my dh's aunt watched, called Novella's. There in Spanish and usually tell of their migration to the US. I've never seen either so I may be all off.

I guess it's no different than watching the evening line up.

Technically The Bill (which is totally brilliant) is a drama, not a soap...

American daytime soaps seem cheesy to me. I do watch Mañana Es Para Siempre sometimes. I like Desperate Housewives, but it doesn't seem to be like the American daytime soaps are.

Well, Digital Spy classify it as a soap, and so does the magazine "Inside Soap" (not sure about "All About Soap"). Perhaps it's borderline!

I think you mean novelas (or telenovelas). The ones I watch are usually about the normal "soap" stuff, but less outrageous. It would depend on which one it is though, and from what country. There's so much diversity in Latin America...and what each country produces sometimes. I watch novelas and movies/peliculas from Mexico mostly. I tried to watch some from Peru, but for some reason, their Spanish is harder for me to understand unless I have on the Spanish subtitles.

I was standing in line at the grocery store and read a soap magazine cover that says "Baby Grace Dies". Time to quit. &:) Of course 2 years from now a teen will show up and... voila... baby not dead after all.

Television soap operas are long-running serials concerned with everyday life. The serial is not to be confused with the series, in which the main characters and format remain the same from programme to programme but each episode is a self-contained plot. In a serial at least one storyline is carried over from one episode to the next. A series is advertised as having a specific number of episodes, but serials are potentially endless.

Although having said that... The Bill has won some soap awards!

The freakiest thing that I ever saw in a soap was when Frankie was killed by a serial killer on Another World. It almost made me stop watching that soap cuz it was scary to watch and not relaxing. But, the soap was cancelled shortly after anyway.
As for Days--I only watch it (on average) once a week. So, I miss a lot of that stuff. And if a storyline starts annoying me, I skip it and watch something else.
I don't love or hate soaps. I usually watch them while I'm doing housework to take my mind off the dullness of that.

You don't watch EastEnders or Heartbeat, Manda? I used to like those when I lived in the UK!

We don't have TV at home anymore. We decided to get rid of it because the TV license fee they charge here is very high -- about $360, twice a year.

When I looked at the kinds of things I was watching (mostly soaps) I realised that they were adding nothing to my life and stealing a lot of my time. It was painful for the first week or so to be without a TV! But I noticed a clear change in me after a while of being soap free. I LOVED my soaps! I was following about five by the time we put the TV away.

This is not the case for everyone, but for me soaps have the potential to be, if not a stumbling block, at least something that clutters up my life and makes it harder for me to grow spiritually.
