I think if we take into account the person we are talking to, we come to a bigger realization of what getting yelled at means to different people.
To some...it literally means YELLING...to others it is talking meanly or sarcastically.
Yes, I suppose I should into account that yelling is not necessarily just speaking in a loud voice. Different people have different definitions, but for many, it is related to volume and tone, and perhaps subject matter as well. I've just realized that for my husband, it is really a combination of these three things.

You all (may I use a Southern term? ) just reminded me: I used to accuse my first husband of yelling at me, and he was completely confused by my accusation. I had forgotten that. Indeed, it related to the idea that I took what he was saying as unfair criticism. I doubt he ever really yelled at me.
