ORIGINAL: nealmorsefan quote:
ORIGINAL: ctpruitt Word of Warning To People Who Are Converting Vinyl or Cassette To CDS: Make sure you keep the original LP or tape. If you copy the lp or tape to a cd and then trash, give away, or sell the original on Ebay or anywhere else, you are breaking the law, technically. I believe you are correct, but, honestly, anyone who has vinyl at this point is not going to get rid of it because they will likely never find another copy. Even rare CDs (like the indie Jars of Clay) show up on eBay every now and again, so there's always the notion that it is re-0.tainable. And does anyone really buy cassettes on eBay anymore? We really only burn CDs of our vinyl/cassettes in order to have a more useful medium to enjoy the music from. The reason I made that post is that I transferred some 400 lps and cassettes that were purchased in the 1980s to cds after I bought a burner in 2001. I could not think of a good reason to keep the originals since I had cd copies of them, so I gave most of them away and sold the remainder. Now I have a program that I can use on my pc so I keep copies of any lps that I transfer for people on my PC as backup in case the cd copies get lost. About 75% of my collection will never be reissued on cd, hence all the copying to cds. Ever since I trasferred my collection to cds, all my friends have wanted me to do theirs. And everytime I have, they don't want the lps or tapes back. Their attitude was the same as mine: "I have a cd now, why do I need the lps or tapes" and then I would get stuck with their collection. So I would just give all their tapes and lps away. The reason for the warning was that sometime agao I posted a question on a web site related to southern gospel music. I found some lps at a radio station of a band that I was not familiar with and masked for info. I said that I would send a cd copy of the lps to anyone who had info. And I immediatly got reprimanded for it by the site adminstrators. They invoked the Fair Use Home Recording Act (or something like that). I looked it up and that is where I got my original warning. I don't want you to make the mistake I did. I was just ignorant of it; I had never heard of the Fair Act thing until then. But, oddly enough, the version of it that I read included a phrase "you cannot be prosecuted for it". How something can be a crime and unprosecutable I don't know./

Yeah, I'm all over that too! I want to have 2 copies of ever vinyl I ever own: 1 to keep as a collection, and 1 to use as decoration in my media room (if and when I can ever afford to make it). Vinyl artwork will always and forever be better than anything you'll ever find behind plastic in a CD. And not just the covers but the vinyl themselves also!

I wish I could find Silverwind Songs on CDs. I enjoyed it when I was introduced to CCM as a fifth and sixth grader back in mid-eighties. They are along the line of ABBA.

I have a Silverwind album somewhere...can't think of the name off-hand. I also recall having a CD version of the album that I sold on eBay several years ago for a nice chunk of change, so they are definitely available. You just gotta look for them. 2 places I have had success finding rare items are Crossingmusic.com and Rocksolidmusic.com. Can't seem to get a link to work on RSM.com...oh well. And, of course, put it on your eBay favorite searches with e-mail notification.

ORIGINAL: nealmorsefan Has anyone had luck hooking up a turntable to your computer and recording your Vinyl to CD? I haven't spent a lot of time investigating this but I have heard that it isn't very easy to do. I've played with this using the Audacity program, but last night was the first time I really put any effort into anything serious. My dad's probably got a lot of older CCM records, most from the early-mid 1980s.

I like vinyl a lot! I have Poor Old Lu's "Sin" on vinyl which has the bonus track "Army Guy" that was only available on the record. And it's a solid white vinyl also!

The thing I miss about vinyl, was the album art. All of the Hipnogisis covers, on Pink Floyd's albums(yes, the guy is really on fire, on the Wish You Were Here Album). The "messages" on the Beatles' albums(Paul is dead- the bass in the black roses, the 'OPD' logo on his jacket). Now it's pretty blah, as far as art. Besides you'd need a magnifying glass to see the subliminal messages.

Yeah, there was something about looking at all of that stuff, everything from the lyrics to the liner notes also.

ORIGINAL: nealmorsefan So how many albums do you all have? And what are your most prized finds? Around 4,000 albums (best guess). Most prized finds: While I'm not a huge Billy Joel fan, I have a mint/white label promo copy of the album he made while he was in the band "Atilla" - this was before he was a solo artist. It's the only copy I've ever seen of it. Paid a quarter for it at a library sale. I also have a few Beatles items I like, my favorite being a copy of "Songs, Pictures and Stories of the Fabulous Beatles" with the three-quarter gatefold cover on Vee-Jay. I have a mono copy of Sgt. Pepper with inserts, but it's pretty beat up, and I also have 3 or 4 copies of the White Album which have the embossed number on them. None of those numbers are very low, however. I've also found a few bootlegs through the years - Dylan, Jackson Browne, Yes. Again, rarely in the best of condition, but worth having to me because of the artists.

I have probably 400 - 500 albums and another 100+ 45's. Prizes include a still playable 45 of "Like a Rolling Stone", a 45 of "Paperback Writer", and a couple of extremely rare albums Billie Holiday recorded in LA. I also have a bootleg copy of Dylan Live at the Royal Albert Hall in '66 that I bought decades before he officially released it, and Yes performing all of the Relayer album in Jersey City (on blue vinyl!).

Now I have about 30 or so CCM albums from the 80's, most which are out of print. I have not actually counted how many LP's that I actually have, so I just estimated instead.

I have some really strange lps among all the ones that my friends have given me to copy to cds for them and left me stuck with them: One appears to by pressed from a translucent form of vinyl; I am noit too sure what it is a recording of, but it seems to have been made possibly made in the 1950s or 1960s. It looks like it is made of clear gold. A few weeks ago my sister-in-law passed away in Hannibal, Missouri. She was a teacher in a town called Perry or possibly Pittsfield, IL. She had a box of dozens of 45s from whenever until they were stopped in the early 1990s. If anyone wants them...you can have them. Just let me know.

One of the last vinyl LP's I bought, was ZZTop's Eliminator(one of their best IMO). If you had a turntable that would allow the needle to run to the center of side two, you could hear Billy Gibbons faintly say "Oh Mercy" over, and over.
