ORIGINAL: danas_mom The mother donkey in Nestor, the Long-Eared Donkey - I first saw this when I was like four years old and I still cannot rewatch it to this day. I cried for hours over that. Is this where the donkey mom freezes to death? If so, I remember it as well, watching it as a child and being quite upset.

Although you don't see the death, James Caan's death, or more correctly, Billy Dee Williams reaction to the death in Brian's Song.

ORIGINAL: DaveW Great lists. I am surprised no one mentioned my favorite: Ernest Borgnine in The Posiedon Adventure. That hand coming up out of the water.... (aside: when I saw this in the theater, someone said "You will notice the sweep second hand is still moving...") There were several powerfully memorable deaths in that movie. Shelley Winters, Gene Hackman, Stella Stevens ... man, now I want to see it again. Did you see the remake? Don't bother. ETA: Reading about Spock's death in Wrath of Khan reminded me: Gene Hackman's death in Poseidon was also self-sacrificial. I think I even cried at that one.

Connor and Griffin in The Navigator: A Mediaeval Odyssey. And if you've never seen it, it's well worth looking for. From New Zealand, 1988.

Many good ones so far. I'll add: James Caan as Brian Piccolo in "Brian's Song". "Testament" The entire movie, basically. Death of "Billy Quarrier" ( son of a missionary couple) in "At Play in the Fields of the Lord". William Holden (Patrick Foley) in "The Earthling". You don't really see him die, just Rick Schroder's reactions after the fact. The little girl's death in "Pan's Labyrinth".

Sir Alec Guinness's death in Bridge on the River Kwai. He's mortally wounded with a Japanese bullet in his back. He pulls off his hat, puzzlement filling his face, and as the full import of his betrayal hits him he mutters "what have I done," and falls on the detonator, blowing the whole bridge sky high. A brilliant, haunting piece of acting.

Mary Corleone's death in Godfather III. The sad picture of Al Pacino in his devastated last weeks in Italy is kind of moving, too.

Wow...I love most of the movies already mentioned... One that truly got me right in the gut was Phenomenon with John Travolta as he's lying there with Kyra Sedgwick and says... it's time... and she says, no not yet... just one of those love-my-husband-so-much moments I don't look forward to ever dealing with

I just remembered two more. In "The Big Red One": the child rescued from the concentration camp by Lee Marvin, dies while being carried on his shoulders. Richard Dreyfuss in "Once Around". Just as it seems that he and Holly Hunter have a great future ahead of them... Timothy Bottoms in "A Shining Season". In a different way (disturbing) Adam Goldberg's excruciatingly slow death by bayonet to the heart in "Saving Private Ryan".

I have to add "Aragog" from Half Blood Prince to the list. Not because of anything to do with the acromantula itself, but Professor Slughorn's reflection and his story of Lilly and the fish... What a great scene. What great emotion and regret he showed. One of my favorites, and a very pivotal scene in the movie.

The end of Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid. quote:
James Caan as Brian Piccolo in "Brian's Song". How 'bout his death as Sonny Corleone in The Godfather? Okay, these weren't exactly "moving", but great death scenes nonetheless.

I just watched Anne of Green Gables with my 8 and 6 yr old daughters - yup that scene was sad! Also - Marley and Me. Not for the dog death. For the miscarriage. I haven't seen many movies portray miscarriages as accurately as this did.

I thought the way it was portrayed was very good.
