Here's two I thought about last evening. The recent Harry Potter movie likely brought one to mind. The first is Cedric from HP and the Goblet of Fire. The death itself, killed by Voltemort in the graveyard, was maybe not itself so moving, but the reaction when Harry takes his body back, when the celebratory mood changed to silence and mourning, was effectively done. More than that, his death, in both the movies and the books, signaled the point at which the stories changed from nice little kid movies to something more grown-up and serious, even dark. The second is Fredo's death in The Godfather, Part II. It was a signal event, too, showing how far Michael had gone in his descent, even to the point of having his own brother killed.

The death of the dad at the end of The Champ made me cry, and I can't believe none of the women have mentioned the deaths of the married couple at the end of the Notebook.
