I was introduced toe Weber's Honor Harrington books a couple of years ago, and have enjoyed them rather well. If you're not familiar with them, they're kind of like Star Trek done in a Tom Clancy kind of way. The political situations rather closely mirror how things are/were when the books were written--one system, the main one, is a kind of British Parliamentary type of government, another is a Soviet set-up, other could be said to represent Europe, the Balkans, and the US. Has anyone else read these stories, or some of them? What did you think?

I've like them so far, though the one I'm reading now, At All Costs I think the name it (it's one of the last ones), has been disappointing in at least one sense, in how it's treated the romance between her and White Haven. While I do mostly agree with a lot of the books' views on military and social things, the way in which it's been rather blase about their affair, and his wife's acceptance of it, has been rather surreal. True, it does give a rather strong pro-life message when it's learned that she's pregnant (any mention of abortion is quickly shot down), so I can respect that. Weber usually does a good job of making the people one all sides rather balanced. The Havenites and Peeps aren't all mindless drones, and even the leaders like Pierre were to some degree trying to do right, which only makes how badly they screwed things up more scary, I guess. Saint-Just was a good villian. And treecats are now among my more favorite sci-fi aliens. And since they've started learning sign-language so they can communicate with humans, I'm waiting to see how their characters will develop. For example, is writing far behind? What about involvement in the military? And, since they are obviously sentient, when will they insist on have representation in government?
