Just a quick question ~

Does the teacher's set include answers to the questions?


For those that have used this approach for Lit. Pros and Cons please? I'm trying to decide what I want my 8th gr. son to do for Reading/Lit this year.

I didn't honestly even know they made teacher's sets, and I used these when I taught private school and am using them now! LOL

I can't really imagine why you'd need the answers to the questions unless you hadn't read the books yourself. The guides usually have a vocabulary section, general comprehension question section, and then application sections. So, except for the general comprehension questions section [which would require you to have read the book], you should be able to figure out the answers to everything else on your own.

I like PP's study guides as they do a pretty thorough job of going over the chapters. When I taught 8th grade, the main emphasis was still on grammar/writing. The students did book reports on books from a list and did a weekly reading from their literature books. Grammar was the big emphasis in middle school while literature was highlighted in high school. So, I think picking some good classics for your son and using the guides to work through them is a good idea.

I didn't know there were teacher's sets either. I have only seen the guides and they do not have answers in them. If you haven't read the book, you cannot really grade the paper, but it still helps the student's comprehension and understanding of the material.

Since I have limited reading time to be one step ahead with this, do you think I should go with something else? Or, do you think reading the book, doing the best you can with the guides, is still good for the student.

It depends on the student. For TL, she did one or two and they were great for her, but for MM, they did not work at all. I had her do one, which I ended up reading the book and doing with her, as she was unable to to it alone. It did show me where she needed help though.
