How many pastors pray, as part of their service, for God's Hand and blessing to be upon them when they preach? The reason I ask is because I have attended various churches of various denominations, and the church I currently attend is the only one in which I've observed the pastor doing this.

I think it is just a matter of preference. I don't think a formal prayer in front of the church is going to make or break a sermon. Some pastors do this as a way to focus the congregation on the sermon because they just finished worship or some other special. It's not a big deal to me one way or the other.

The pastors at my church pray before the sermon, supposedly to get the congregation in the right mood or heart and prepare to receive God's word.

This is done sometimes at our congregation. One thing I like from the PRMI* meetings I have attended: the person speaking usually asks for as many as want to to come forward and pray for them before they speak. *Presbyterian/Reform Ministries International

I find it crucial prior to handling the word of God publicly. We must never forget that there is a spiritual battle going on, and there is always the danger of the flesh getting in the way of God's glory!

Although I don't really preach formally any more. When I did much prayer and preparation was done privately, I believe that is the most important part. The public prayer was a sort of a segway to the message. Yes, I asked for God's guidance but I also prayed tha peoples ears and spirits would be opened to what God had to say. It also helps to focus people and settle them so they can hear the message. In all reality, it's not Biblically necessary. Holdcard

When I preach, I spend many hours in prayer before delivering. When I go up, I usually say a quick, "God, if you don't help me and this isn't from you, it'll really really suck, so let's git 'er done" kind of prayer.

If you don’t pray in private during sermon preparation it shows. In public I will normally read from the Word, and then pray before the message. Any given Sunday morning Service we will; Open with Prayer. Our ushers will ask prayer before the offering. Later we will ask prayer requests, then gather around the alter for prayer. The Pastor will pray after reading of the Word. We will then close our meeting with prayer. Many times we may pray and anoint someone with oil over some infirmity; there is communion and other special opportunities for prayer. We are to be a house of prayer.

WOW! I have just finished a message on Matthew 21 where Jesus quotes Is. 56, it is written My house shall be called a house of prayer! (not exact) We do well to keep this on our mind as we plan/program our Worship. Regarding preaching, I have never entered the pulpit/podium/front of the assembly hall without opening in prayer. Usually I will read the message Scripture and then pray. After, I seat the body and enter into the message. I can't imagine speaking to God's people from His Word without first speaking to Him.

The reason I ask is because I have attended various churches of various denominations, and the church I currently attend is the only one in which I've observed the pastor doing this. We have bible study before the worship service. Each bible study group prays for the service before we enter the sanctuary. I have never paid much attention to the actual number of people/pastors who pray before the service. I have always believe we are "all" praying for the service when whomever speaks the prayer out loud.

I think it's better to pray in private and also infront of the congregation so they can agree with the pastor in the prayer.

I agree with most of the posts. Pastors should pray however long is needed "before" and "during" preparation. And a quick prayer before teaching/preaching doesn't hurt. But the focus isn't just on a pastor/teacher. Turn the tide and ask "how many congregates pray before coming to church." How many pray while the pastor is praying? Is that the only time they pray? The house of God is to be called the "House of Prayer" and it was for all nations (Gentiles). So, do all gentiles have to pray or do the Jews have to pray for the gentiles?.................lol..................just a thought. We come to church biblically to be equipped for the ministry. Not a pulpit ministry, but a ministry of living FOR God through Jesus Christ. Sorry for the nitpicking...............lol

Lapidoth, this is not nitpicking in my eyes. What you are saying in your post is exactly what I was going to post! God bless you for the words you just gave. We should all be mindful of what you've said. For me, personally, I wonder the same thing all the time. I am a firm believer that it takes sincere prayer before, during and after the message is given for the Word to sink deep into our soul. We are wise to pray before entering into His gates with thanksgiving and into His courts with praise. The enemy is inside the church. satan does not care one iota as to how full the pews are. his goal is to have our minds sooo preoccupied with things of this world, that when we sit there to receive God's message, the seeds fall on fallow, hard, ground. We should pray for the leading of the Holy Spirit, for God's Word to be spoken in Truth. I read somewhere a long time ago that keeps coming back into my head and heart lately and it is this; satan trembles when he sees the weakest saint upon his knees. If all of us could be mindful of this, I do believe we will see the Holy Spirit move in such a way that He brings forth a revival within ourselves and within the Body of Christ.... So, to me, the body of believers are wise to heed what you have said, Lapidoth. Thank you.

I have filled in during a pastor's absence many times and have never spoken from the pulpit without praying first. Even in teaching a class I pray 99.9% of the time first...on a rare occas. I may say we are going to pray later, but almost always it is at the beginning and end of class.

I'm usually rushing around getting me and my son ready for Sunday School/church and what are we going to eat since we won't have lunch until 1:00. I think I need to pay a little extra attention to pray about church while on the way to church. Edit: typo. Sometimes it's hard to concentrate with so much going on around me.

I know of a church who has a team of two elder's appointed 2 prayer each Sunday. Those 2 do not sit in the service they go into the prayer room and pray during the entire service.

Greetings in Jesus, As buckifn mentioned, we too employ 'prayer warriors' during each morning worship gathering. They rotate differing weeks and the week they are praying, they receive a free CD of the morning message. They are primarily praying for souls and a strong move of God's Spirit. However, the message is an offering from the Pastor/preacher back to the Lord, therefore I'm stuck on the fact that the messenger must open with prayer, asking God to receive his/her offering (message) and to anoint both it and the hearers. regret looks back, worry looks around but faith looks up from where our help comes from ...

The Elder's rotate weeks so that none of them are absent from a service more than once per month. I think it is a great idea!
