One Herod was when Jesus was born, and killed the males under 2 years old.

Was it another Herod that beheaded John the Baptist?

thanks
John

Yes, it was one of Herod the Great's sons that beheaded John the Baptist; however, Herod the Great had more than one son, so technically there were more than two Herod's. When Herod the Great died, his "kingdom" (actually the kingdom of Rome) was divided among his sons. The reason that John the baptist was beheaded was because he was condemning Herod for taking his brothers wife (i.e. another Herod)

The Massacre of the Innocents is an episode of mass infanticide Herod the Great(74-4 BC) that appears in the Gospel of Matthew 2:16-18. The author, traditionally believed to be Matthew the Evangelist, reports that King Herod ordered the execution of all young male children in the village of Bethlehem, so as to avoid the loss of his throne to a newborn King of the Jews whose birth had been announced to him by the Magi.

Herod Antipas, son of Herod the Great(his brother Herod Archelaus was deposed/exiled after only ruling two years)was the Herod described in the New Testament as ordering John the Baptist's death and as mocking Jesus.

Thanks. you for the answers, I'll have to read it again!

I did know about "Massacre of the Innocents". When I took art history in college, one of the paintings was that subject.
