I'd check with the teacher about wikipedia. It's a good site, but it can contain inconsistencies. (It says so in the disclaimer, I think). I would ask about using Britannica or another encyclopedia for fact-checking.

specificly said to only use wikipedia to check the facts. Why? So that you/the class can prove that winkipedia is not a good source for finding facts?

Wikipedia is often NOT allowed when doing research. It's facts are often not factual at al but supposition, rumor or even slanderousl!!!! It's a site where anyone can edit the info. Be careful of citing info as factual when relying solely on Wikipedia. I agree, check with your teacher to verify using Wikipedia for research. Good luck!

Yup, I think it's possible you misunderstood her or she misspoke about using Wikipedia. However, we have used the links imbedded in the citations section of Wikipekia articles for research. Look for .edu and .gov sites.

http://chronicle.com/wiredcampus/article/1328/wikipedia-founder-discourages-academic-use-of-his-creation Wikipedia Founder Discourages Academic Use of His Creation Wikipedia, an online encyclopedia compiled by a distributed network of volunteers, has often come under attack by academics as being shoddy and full of inaccuracies. Even Wikipedia’s founder, Jimmy Wales, says he wants to get the message out to college students that they shouldn’t use it for class projects or serious research. Speaking at a conference at the University of Pennsylvania on Friday called “The Hyperlinked Society,” Mr. Wales said that he gets about 10 e-mail messages a week from students who complain that Wikipedia has gotten them into academic hot water. “They say, ‘Please help me. I got an F on my paper because I cited Wikipedia’” and the information turned out to be wrong, he says. But he said he has no sympathy for their plight, noting that he thinks to himself: “For God sake, you’re in college; don’t cite the encyclopedia.”
