Do you use an internet filter to protect your family from seeing things you don't want them to see online? Which one do you use and what are the pros and cons of the filter you use?

I don't have a filter on my kid's computers, but haven't had a problem.

We have chosen computers that have very good parental controls that allow me to see their history through the parental area.

With the parental controls, I can limit not only the time, but also set when they can get on. One of my kids can only get on the computer between noon and before 7:30 PM and and can only have one hour of free time during those hours. I have also set which sites he able to access. If he wants to go somewhere else, he has to come and have me give permission by having me type in the administrator's password.

The computer lets them know when their time is almost up and then shuts down when their time is over. It works really well since they rarely ask me for more time like they used to.

They also have no expectation of privacy and have the computers in public areas. There is a lot more leeway with my eldest, but he knows that I will check his computer at any time, and that includes facebook and email.

It is working for us. We just couldn't find anything that worked for our needs as well as having a really good computer and a LOT of supervision.

Did the parental controls you mentioned come with Windows Vista? We have XP.

No, all our computers are Macs.

No, I don't use any one. Is there any one that can be used with ease for XP. I also need it badly and want to know about it.

We had a lot of problems with our oldest on the computer. After trying many different software programs that you load on your computer and learning they can be hacked by teens with nothing better to do, I finally found something that works for me. I use OpenDNS which essentially points your computer to their servers to translate DNS requests (that is what tells your computer what the Internet IP address is for the URL name you typed in). It has categories and an Updater tool that I use for when my ISP changes my IP address.

I know a lot of this is technical, but if you go to their website I think it is somewhat easy.
