stateofgrace -> We are now a homeschooling family (sort of) (6/30/2009 2:36:10 PM)

A few years ago I never would have expected this...but I just put in an application and deposit with an online Christian academy.

My younger daughter, who is a rising junior in high school, is going to be "home-schooled" starting in August. The quotes are because I consider it more a partnership between me and the online academy. She is going to be off-and-on supervised by me while she works on a combination of online and traditional course materials, as well as held accountable by staff at the academy. I'm still working, and hubby is still an OTR trucker.

The plan is also for her to take her foreign language classes and possibly start on college classes at the local community college. Apparently she can do this as long as she is classified as "home schooled."

This comes after two years of hard lobbying by my daughter. While she did come to actually like public high school this last year, she still wanted the different educational experience and flexibility of home schooling (yes, the structured program we are using is less flexible than do-it-yourself home schooling but more flexible than public school). If she had her choice, she'd skip the last two years of high school and go straight to college.

I'm still shaking my head that we're in this situation. Even with the structure of the program we're going into, I still find it intimidating. It is a walk by faith!

Congrats to your daughter! It's awesome to watch your plans come to fruition. She will likely do an excellent job all the way around.[:)]

Welcome State of Grace! It sounds like you guys have a great plan in place & you have a motivated student. You both will do just fine!

I think it is wonderful that you are willing to let your daughter explore her educational options. There is very little about parenting that isn't intimidating or just flat out terrifying, and it takes a brave and unselfish parent to set aside those feelings and encourage their kids pursue their goals. Kudos.

That's great! May God bless you as you start on this new journey![:D]

You may not be a traditional homeschooler (what in the world is THAT anyway...seems to me we're all pretty different!), but you will likely have many of the same joys and rough spots as the rest of us.[:D]

Thanks for the words of support, everyone. I've got paperwork to fill out (with the local school system, and then records sent to the online school) and she's got to take the achievement tests online in the next week, so we are officially moving along!

The online classes will be SOS, but we'll likely only do one or two of them. I think doing all SOS would be tedious.

Wow! I am always extremely impressed. You are going to do fine. It is brave for you and your husband to do this at this stage of the game. There is nothing wrong with the approach you have taken. If in your shoes, I would probably take the same route. It gives you security, but a lot more flexibility. You are going to do great. I know this because you have already been very involved with your children and their education, so this may actually end up being easier.

I would like to add my congratulations!!! You're both going to do great! I love to hear about youth who are grabbing hold of their own education and moving toward their goals. The mental shift I had to make from "teacher" to "facilitator" for my oldest was probably one of the most difficult steps I've taken in our homeschool journey. Once made, though, I found that being her cheering section is a lot more fun than being her taskmaster!!! We work a lot better together now!

I pray that you and your daughter will develop the same comraderie in the coming months! Blessings!!!

How Exciting-Your daughter sounds like a very motivated young woman. College classes are a wonderful option for her. Both my sons have taken college courses and enjoyed the experience. in California, they are free for high school students. I know it's a little scary at first but you will get used to it really quickly. You are definitely a homeschool family! the great thing about homeschooling is that everyone does it differently.
