Yes, that is a strange contradiction Dave. I'm going by my own situation in junior high and high school as to the rise in teen violence. (I don't remember gangs and violence being so open among teens.) I can see from the poll that most feel it's a combo of circumstances that lead to teen violence. And they're probably right. Although if Jesus and the bible was the center of homes, then teens would probably not feel the need to resort to violence to deal with life.
As far as the 7 teens shoot. One 18 year old had been arrested for the crime, but was then released for lack of evidence. I'm praying they find the shooters and they are arrested. If they get away with this, I'm sure there'll be more to follow from them.

Although the numbers don't back up this "rise" in teen violence.

Dave, I suspect the Baltimore numbers are most correct since they are quoted from the latest FBI statistics. It looks like the Chicago Sun-Times did its own math.

Thanks for all of your opinions. Some children these days seem so unhappy and they want to take it out on the world. I'm sure lack of God in their lives has a lot to do with it.

There are so many reasons. But, the jist of it comes down to not only lacking God, but a lack of parents. Far too many are being raised by single parents. Far too many who are fortunate enough to have both parents in the home have parents who are so busy trying to to provide material things that they don't spend quantity time with their kids. IN the 1980's we heard the buzz word "quality time." We were supposed to spend quality time with our kids. Quality time is quantity time.

After nearly 20 years of working with wounded people (teens and adults) in the justice system, I have heard countless people speak of the lack of love in their own parents and others that have contributed to the callous attitude they have brought on others.

Add to the lack of parental involvement the influence of the media. We are bombarded with all sorts of messages to pursue values that contradict biblical teaching.

I recently heard a news report on the radio that spoke about how teens and their parents are more disconnected today than in previous generations. I have to ask, how can this be? We live in an age where the majority of teens post the contents of their heart on social networking sites crying out to be known and loved. Is it the fault of the kids that they are not connecting with their parents? Seems to me it's the responsibility of the parent to seek to know their child/children. That instead of pursuing the career or the next material thing that parents should be involved in the every details of their younguns.

Perhaps if we parents loved our kids just as Christ loves us, we wouldn't have these tragic headlines. I know, I'm preaching to the choir. But, I just had to say it.

From re-reading it, it seems to me that Baltimore was working on murders per capita (rate per 1000 residents) while the Chicago claim is based on raw numbers regardless of population size.

What is unclear from either story is whether they counted just the municipal area (within city limits) for murder count and population; or if they included all the suburbs as well. That could skew the numbers.
