Wednesday July 1 .... My wonderful DH got up bright n' early and flew off at the crack of dawn. He just called to say hello .... said he doesn't know what time he'll be home tonight, but no later than 9 or 10pm. I got up, paid bills, watered plants, fed the cats, picked up some things around the house, went swimming, chatted on the phone with a college friend, and am considering cleaning out the fridge and freezer this afternoon. I also spent some time typing up a list of basic house rules for our french student, and then using various free online translators to translate them into french. Supposed to be 102 here today.

Hi everybody. Just signing in for the month. Some were talking about giving their excess fruit and vegetables away in last month's thread. I'm sure local soup kitchens would appreciate them if you have them nearby. Even if they don't use them in their meals, they'd be great to give to the patrons of the soup kitchen. Roberta, Amish people on your train? How fascinating! I'm just fascinated about their lifestyle. Sorry your trip wasn't as good as you would have liked though.

Hello ladies! I haven't visited this thread in quite some time. Trish, I was thinking of you the other day and I wanted to share this picture with you. She is the newest addition to our family. So Mary is a big sister now!! Veronica was born on the 26th. She is four days in this picture.

I agree, too!!!! Happy July 2, everyone! I'm excited that my wonderful DH has a three-day weekend. (Of course, he still will be emailing and there will be a zillion phone calls, but I will still BE with him, woo hoo!) Locally, we had a big fire start on the southern banks of the San Joaquin River this afternoon/evening ... about 1/2 mile from us. We saw the plumes of smoke and what sounded like a zillion firetrucks. (24 trucks responded, according to the news media.) One home was totally destroyed, two more have extensive damage, and about 20 homes are still evacuated. The firefighters were still fighting the blaze 4 hours after it started (as of 8pm tonight.) The wind was really whipping up, which is pretty scary. (Fortunately, we have a large 6-lane street between us and the neighborhood with the fire.)

It is pretty freaky to have a fire near you; there was once a fire in my apartment building, and even though it was contained to one unit, it was pretty frightening. Makes you think that maybe we should use concrete in home construction too; it does pretty well with containing fires in high-rises.

Fires are scary. Have seen them from a distance but I don't need to be anywhere close to them. Concretet houses in california would significantly raise the heating and cooling bills. Plus I don't know if they use concrete in earthquake prone areas.

But she's in california, it would significantly raise the heating and cooling bills. I wouldn't have thought of that; here (central Canada) houses are becoming more and more air-tight and insulated to reduce both the heating and cooling costs; concrete is seen as a material that adapts well to that but is too expensive for single family housing. At least I think that's why it isn't used; I know proponents of "green" construction are trying to encourage its use. However, if houses in the south are built less air-tight, concrete would definitely be a disadvantage.

She gives Veronica lots of hugs and kisses, but she also likes to pat her. And well, her pats are not the most gentle in the world. Poor thing has already been konked in the head by toys and has been sat on at least once. So, I think the real question is how is Veronica coping? HA!!

Congratulations Nicole! Your post was so subtle I didn't realize it was you that had the baby! Weekend plans: date night with DH tonight; Sat/Sun, do laundry, do groceries, cook for the week, study, go to church. Almost the same weekend we have every week. Ah well, the chores have to get done sometime! quote:

Tonight we aren't doing anything (although it is my birthday). Ryan woke up this morning and had even forgotten about it! It wasn't until my son wished me happy birthday that Ryan remembered! HA! Tomorrow we will be going to my parents farm for hamburgers and fireworks. Kind of like a family potluck. I'm to bring some watermellon. YUM!! Sunday we go to church and my "little flower" Veronica will be baptized. After that just hanging out with the family at home. If it is nice on Sunday I may kick the older two out for a couple hours to the swimming pool. They've been inside all day watching an old collection of the Super Mario Bros. cartoon.
