We don't really HAVE weekend plans ... it should be 104-107 here. I'm sure we'll swim. And eat. And hang out with the cats. We may get DH's car washed. (We got mine washed and waxed today!)

Happy birthday, Nicole! How precious that Mary is making her little sister feel welcome. LOL! Aww, and Veronica gets baptised this weekend. YAY!

Sharon, what have you been feeding your dog to make it have that problem? I'd say put a cork in the dog, but then that would just make it blow up. Not a good idea.

Not much planned for the weekend. I can't stand crowds and where there are fireworks there are crowds. The crowds are all ready starting campers and camping out and all.

Happy 4th of July to all!

Thanks to France for assisting in our little revolution (we couldn't have done it without you).

And here's to England, we couldn't have revolted from a nicer country.

Dog farts have NOTHING on cat farts, trust me!

Nestled in the southwest corner of our front yard, in the flower beds between the grass and our grapefruit tree, is a ginormous, 12-foot-tall, multi-headed mutant sunflower. I wish I could take credit for this impressive dsplay of flora, but it grew on its own from a black oil sunflower seed tossed aside by hungry birdies or foraging squirrels. When it was just 6 feet tall, we attached it to a metal stake for support, but with its recent heat-inspired growth spurt, we decided to anchor it more firmly to an adjacent tree using some natural twine. My wonderful DH was gracious enough to pose for some photos and to prop up Mr. Sunflower. Pretty cool, huh?

That is so true. I remember driving to and from college in Kansas and driving past a whole field of sunflowers. They always seemed to be watching you drive by.

PLANNING FOR PIERRE

We were busy bees this weekend, getting things ready and planned for Pierre .... our 16-year-old French kid who we will host for 3 weeks this summer as part of a summer English language immersion program. We've cleaned out 1/2 the closet in our guest room (no easy task, lol) as well as the dresser drawers, too! I've also put away most of the floral knick-knacks in the bedroom and the guest bathroom ... and switched the sheets from floral to solid lime green. I also put together this nifty basket of candy, nuts and snacks -- so that if he's got the munchies he can just help himself whenever he wants ... I even put gum and mints in there. (I'll add apples the day he arrives!) Some of it is healthy stuff ... almonds, raisin boxes, granola bars, too. I also put 8 small bottles of water in his room, on the book shelf, in case he's thirsty and/or doesn't like our tap water. His profile (and his Facebook page) shows that he's really into music and guitar, so today we went to the book store and picked up 4 magazines for him ... guitar-music ones. I just thought that would make him feel welcome, ya know? (He arrives a week from Monday, on July 13)

We're taking Pierre to Monterey/Carmel for 2 days (in the 1st week), and then to San Francisco for 2 days (in his 3rd week.) We met another host family at Orientation (they are very nice -- they are actually from Mexico and are here because the father works for the Mexican consulate) ... and we've made arrangements to take the host son (Gerardo) and their student (Martin) with us to Monterey/Carmel for the first trip. (We were already getting Pierre his own hotel room, so why not just fill it up with teenage boys, right?) Anyway ... the trip should be a blast .... my DH and I (with no kids), and three teenage boys! Talk about an adventure, huh?

Anyway, you'll probably be hearing about our adventures with Pierre this month -- since he'll be here July 13-August 1!

PLANS FOR THIS UPCOMING WEEK

I went to the eye doc last week for my annual checkup (everything's fine), but my prescription has changed. I've been wanting new glasses, so I think I'll head over to WalMart and see what they have. My insurance is weird -- they will cover one eye doctor visit per year (only because I'm diabetic), but they don't pay anything for glasses. Oh well. It's nice to get the eye appt itself paid for, right? Anyway ... glasses can be pricey, and I got my last pair from WalMart and was happy with them, so back I go. DH will be busy this week and working (flying) a lot ... so I won't make too many dinnertime plans until I know what schedule he's working each day. I am sure I can get him to grill by Friday and next weekend, so we may just do sammies and salads and "whatevers" between now and then! It's hard enough to cook just for two, and even more complicated when his hours are unpredictable!

I have vsp for eye insurance. I get either glasses or contacts covered. Although I am getting irritated at this 75.00 fee for contact lens fitting.

I don't think eye insurance saves that much money, its just to get you to go regularly, diabetic or not.

Regular eye problems are covered under the health insurance.

Vision problems aren't. It gets confusing.

Yup ... seems to me that a "vision problem" IS an "eye problem!" LOL!

I woke up at 5:45am this merry Monday morning because the cats were playing Nascar all over my bed. Seriously, we had three cats mysteriously zooming and crashing around our bedroom for no apparent reason other than the obvious one: THEY ARE CATS. So I got up to run the Whole House Fan and get some more cool air inside our house! (The only time you will hear me use the word cool all summer is in reference to either out of town weather, or in reference to 5am weather!) Anyway, I straightened up the family room, put away clean dishes in the kitchen, and enjoyed watching the kitties inside and the birdies outside. At about 6:15am I chased off a neighbor's cat who had climbed my front tree (where all my bird feeders are!)

It's now 6:45am and I'm awake ... but it's more than an hour away until breakfast time .... ugh! If I eat breakfast too early, I have to eat lunch too early, and I want dinner in the middle of the afternoon! Ahh.... the joys of scheduled eating, insulin shots, and diabetes, huh? Oh well .... maybe I will just try not to THINK about breakfast for a while!

I need new glasses soon too; DH has been commenting about how I can't see stuff (eg reading street signs) that he has no trouble with. Insurance here is pretty dumb about glasses. I believe we're covered for an exam every 3 yrs, and $200 for glasses every 2 years. That might have been generous at one time but these days it's barely enough to cover lenses (most packages are ~$150-200), let alone frames, which usually start at $100 for the cheapos you know will fall apart. Need another pair of glasses for computer or for reading? Feel free to buy them on your own dime.

I just don't get our insurance; it's provided by work, and they know they're sitting us down in cubicle farms and having us stare at computer screens for 8 hrs/day--why don't they at least kick in a bit more to help us keep our eyes in good shape?

My glasses cost a ton of money. I got a new pair a few weeks ago, and the lenses took up a majority of the cost.

My sis is upset with me because I told my mom something that happened on a recent trip that my sis and I took, but I think it was worth it-- upset or not.

I decided to (try to) get a Master's when the next entrance semester comes around. I'd try to go this August, but I haven't taken the GRE yet... I don't want to (take the test), but you gotta do what you gotta do. I'm concerned about being able to pay for classes and being able to work at the same time, but I'll have to figure all that out (there's no fin. aid for the program and they don't offer being a TA or anything). If I went for a PhD I'd have paid tuition, a stipend and insurance-- none of which I have with a Master's program. I'm confused about the entrance requirements though; on one page they say you have to have certain classes as prereqs, but then on another page they say something different. It wouldn't matter, but I've done the prereqs only on the first page I looked at, but not the second. Lol. I kind of wish all the grad schools for biomedical grad degrees would have a similar set of prereqs.

How was everyone's holiday (for those in the States )?

Harvie- You may want to check out Costco, also. I bought my glasses there in March for approximately $130.00 and that included the frame, the lenses with scratch resistance and transitions (when they automatically get dark in direct sunlight) I think I got a great bargain and I get lots of compliments on them.

I had a great 4th of July while watching a baseball game, eating a hotdog and seeing one of the most spectacular fireworks show I have seen in a very long time. It helped that I had my earplugs in. Love the fireworks but hate the noise. Does anyone else hate the sound of a fireworks show? Sometimes I feel like I am the only one that brings earplugs to these events.

Honestly I have not ever thought that eye care was too expensive. But since I don't do any other medical care besides eyes, teeth, and chiropractor, I guess it is a low percentage of my income that goes to that stuff.

I DO think contact solution is too expensive though. Even at Wal*Mart it is like $13 for two bottles of the kind I like. Are you kidding me? There is no way it costs that much to make the stuff.

But I married someone whose father is an optometrist, so now all my eye care is free.

I am trying to convince my husband he should become a chiropractor so I can have that free too

The contact lens solution is expensive, but I buy the double bottles at Costco for almost the same price as one at the grocery store.

Btw now I can't find my glasses. They are here somewhere because I only use them to drive so I wouldn't have left them anywhere else.

never mind they are on the floor beside the desk. Duh. Stupid cat.
