We'll head back to WalMart tonight to get a new pair ... hopefully the SAME style I bought last time! (And I like the Transitions lenses, as well.) I have only seen an optical store carry the same frames as I already had once. I was very lucky they did, because the frames broke but the lenses were fine, so I just bought the frames again. Has anybody else had a new prescription put in an existing frame? I'm debating whether to do that this time around. They're plastic and they're three years old but they are in good shape because I have two pairs of glasses.

I will probably do that if my prescription changes cause this is the only pair of glasses that I have ever liked.

Has anybody else had a new prescription put in an existing frame? Yes, I did that with the glasses I'm wearing now. The previous company used a defective lens and refused to make it right. I couldn't wear the glasses at all. Tried to wear them and it made me sick to my stomach. I didn't get around to getting lenses from another company for a couple of years. So I got a new exam, new Rx and used the frames. The new company encouraged me to buy new and refused to guarantee the frame. Hey, they were new frames that hadn't been worn more than an hour. Worked out great! Anne

ORIGINAL: Harvie On the phone, Walmart said that the optical department was open til 9pm. We got there at 7:05pm. They closed at 7:00pm. That is very typical for Wal Mart. They seldom have a back up person working in any dept. and if the person who is supposed to be there is sick, they will close it rather than call in another person. It saves them money because most people will just come back at another time, even if it's very inconvenient for them.

I think it's the service that is expensive. Costco keeps their prices down by providing bare-bones service and really cheap frames. I got glasses there once; I am not very good at picking frames so they were kinda too big for me, and they fell apart within a year. No warranties on them either. I didn't find their prices all that lower than other places, to be honest. This is the first pair I have purchased from Costco. I bought their "Kirkland" brand and I hope they last 2-3 years. If they do, I will probably make another purchase there. I don't think the contact solutions that I buy are expensive. I have day-to-day wear, so I have to take mine out every night. I spend about $6.00 for Target's brand of a cleansing solution that will last about a month. I also get their saline solution for around $2.00. Since I bought my glasses and wear them quite a bit now, I wear my contacts a lot less and don't have to buy the solutions as much. Another advantage to wearing glasses.

ORIGINAL: _Cinderella_ I greatly dislike glasses because I cannot keep them adjusted for anything. And having them adjusted never seems to fix the problem. I know what you mean I have been wearing glasses since 3rd grade...The idea of contact just weird me out though.

I'd love to wear contacts but my eyes get too dry. I've also been dealing with something like blepharitis or ocular rosacea; contacts are not a good idea until it clears up. I did wear them intermittently after getting some disposables for a show I was in (everybody in glasses had to go without or switch to contacts), and I found I loved them, but even before my eyes started bugging me I couldn't wear them to work. It was just too dry.

Yeah, that's the way I was. I couldn't fathom the thought of a finger or anything else touching my eye; the very first time I used them the doc put them in and I kept winking and swirming. After I got comfortable with the idea that I can touch my eyeball and it wasn't that bad, I was fine.

For some reason, I get eyelashes in my eyes all the time lately; if I didn't know that it doesn't hurt to touch your eyeball (the whites anyhow) I would be in trouble--ironically my eyes would hurt more. My DH is so good at putting contacts in he can do it one-handed; props his eyelid open with his index and ring finger, and pops it in with his middle finger. Even his optometrist was impressed. That was with gas-permeable lenses though (they're smaller).

I really don't think that I could handle having to wear contacts. I don't like wearing glasses either, but by far, I would much prefer glasses to contacts.

My glasses have (finally) been ordered. I went back to WalMart where I got my glasses last time, planning to just get the same glasses -- quick, simple, and I'd be done. No such luck ... they've been discontinued. So I tried on a few pair and made a decision. Of course, the frames on the new ones are twice the price of the frames on the last pair. Oh well! Once again, I ordered the lightest weight lenses, plus Transitions coating so that they will be sunglass-y when needed. Total cost ... $363. My wonderful DH joked that $1 a day for a year's worth of being able to SEE isn't that bad, in the grand scheme of things. My girlfriend, Laura, came over to swim today, and for lunch. We rarely get together because of her work schedule ... she's a community college professor and has about an hour commute (each way) to work ... and works afternoons/evenings 5 days a week. But today the city broke a water main (yay!) and she called me to say that her school was closing! So she came over, we swam and chatted, made sammies, chatted some more, and she went home to take a nap, lol! It was nice -- unexpected -- but nice! I'm a weather geek. Yes I am. I freely admit it. If I went back to school to study something, it would definitely be weather. Anyway, for those of you who are interested, we've had 12 days so far this year of temperatures over 100 degrees ... with a LOT more coming. We usually get 30 or so days a year in triple digits, so I'm watching to see how we're doing. Since this is the summer of my great "Air Conditioning Experiment," I seem to be paying a LOT more attention to the weather forecasts. So what's the big experiment? Well, I was inspired by the thread over in Finance that asked if air conditioning was a "need" or a "want." And it really got me to thinking about biblical times ... heck, even frontier/pioneer times, when people built this country and farmed the land and carved Mount Rushmore and built the Hoover Dam ... without air conditioning. Anyway, I resolved (with my DH's blessing), to see if we could "fast" from turning on the A/C in the house this summer.... with the possible exception of the three weeks we'll have Pierre staying with us. (DH cheerfully pointed out that it's really not fair to make HIM "fast" from air conditioning when it's over 100 outside!) I think we're ready for Pierre's 3 week visit from France. We even bought (gasp) sodas with sugar in them! (double gasp!) And I stocked up on what my wonderful DH calls "the good ice cream!" LOL! I talked to one of the neighbor boys (who seems like a nice, but quiet, kid) who's agreed to come swimming (probably with his younger brother in tow), a few times while Pierre's here ... and maybe do some other stuff with him, too. While I know he said yes to be nice and neighborly, I suspect he also said yes because we have a pool and they don't. That's ok ... I laughed and told him we also had lots of junk food and ice cream and that I was prepared to bribe him as needed so that Pierre wouldn't be bored! (They both are into guitar and music, so I do think they might "click!")

How's the experiment going for you Harvie? We did fairly well this summer with out the a/c until the humidity came. If I don't turn on the a/c it makes my wallpaper in my dining room bubble (it is really old paper). So right now we have it going. And with a newborn, I'm glad we have it on. For me trying to nurse a newborn when I'm hot is miserable.
