ORIGINAL: cherish405 I really don't think that I could handle having to wear contacts. I don't like wearing glasses either, but by far, I would much prefer glasses to contacts. I feel the same way.

Well, I was inspired by the thread over in Finance that asked if air conditioning was a "need" or a "want." And it really got me to thinking about biblical times ... heck, even frontier/pioneer times, when people built this country and farmed the land and carved Mount Rushmore and built the Hoover Dam ... without air conditioning. and a lot of people died too. More power to you! I get too sick if it's hot and humid. I can stand hot, but the humidity just sucks the breath out of me. Plus it's hard on all this oak flooring and such in the house. The banisters really get sticky. Anyway, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

Back in the olden days they didn't have cars and all this machinery stuff heating up the atmosphere either. I think it is hotter now. Of course I have nothing to back up my opinion. It's just my two cents.

I just couldn't handle not having air conditioning. Before, I found that I could handle the heat better than the cold. Not anymore. I can't handle extreme temperatures due to having fibromyalgia, and now I'm finding that I can get things to warm me up, but once I'm hot, it takes a lot to cool me back down. Harvie, you're a brave woman trying to forego air conditioning. It's awesome that you're ready for Pierre too, along with providing him play mates.

I think the worst humidity that I've ever experienced was Nebraska and North Carolina. I've been to Texas several times, but I think it was always winter.

I like thunder boomers too. When I lived along Lake Erie I loved watching the storm come off the lake. Storms are a little different where I live now but I live in a condo above the tree line and can see the lightening--it is awesome.

That happen in Hawaii I'll be walking to the bus stop and feel the humidity before 7:00am . I don't remember HI being humid. Maybe that is because I was only 10 when I lived there?

In the area I live in here in Nebraska, we pretty much create a lot of our own humidity. This is a major farming area and with all of the corn and beans that have to be irrigated via pivots (really large sprinklers) and irrigation pipe we get a lot of humidity. Well I've successfully gotten two of the four kids bathed for church tomorrow. Actually I didn't do anything. I told the older two (7 and 6) to go take their baths. But, that just means I don't have to worry about them tomorrow. It's the two babies that always take up my time. Especially the newborn because she likes to feed every hour in the mornings!!

Harvie, have you had Transitions before? Does it work well? My dad had a pair when they first debuted the technology, and after a couple of years they got dark and stayed dark. I'm really tempted to try it though; I'm sick of juggling glasses and sunglasses.

My only complaint is that they don't stay dark in the car. They are activated by the uv rays and vehicle windows have a uv blocker in them so that prevents them from being dark in the car. I have two pairs of glasses one with the brown lenses and one with the gray lenses. I like the gray the most because they seem to get darker than the brown. I also wear contacts and prefer them over glasses any day. I would LOVE to get Lasik (is that how you spell it?) surgery.

This is a major farming area and with all of the corn and beans that have to be irrigated via pivots (really large sprinklers) and irrigation pipe we get a lot of humidity. We live smack-dab in the middle of the county that's the largest agricultural producer in the US ... more crops and more milk dairy production than any other county, in fact. Our entire county is criss-crossed with open agricultural canals, and we've got the San Joaquin River 1/2 mile north of us, Pine Flat dam and Millerton Lake just a few miles away, and the Kings River south of us ... so we can be more humid than many inland parts of California, actually. Every time I think about using the air conditioning, I just smile and remind myself that we're reducing our carbon footprint! (grin) And I go through our trash and double-check for recyclables, lol! Yes, I am a tree-hugging nutcase! I just checked our 10-day weather forecast. Ready for it? 98, 98, 103, 104, 104, 104, 102, 102, 102, 102. Oh well, at least our mid-July weather in consistent, right? (grin) At least it cools down at night to 72 (about 4am - 7am, actually!) Well, Pierre arrives tomorrow night! His plane actually lands tomorrow late afternoon in San Francisco, then they stick 'em together on a bus (20 students and 2 adult chaperones) for the 3-4 hour drive to Fresno. We pick them up at 10pm from a Denny's parking lot! We got all the cat fur off the guest bed (yet again) and have closed the door to keep the cats out of the room until he gets here. My neighbor and her 6 year old daughter are coming over this afternoon to swim. Sometimes another neighbor and her 8 year old son come at the same time .... it gets pretty noisy out there! (sometimes I come out and play with them, sometimes I stay inside, lol .... they appreciate the use of the pool and don't mind when I don't join them!)

I'd buy the transitions but I really need them for driving. I bought a pair of Oakleys in part because you can get prescription lenses for them but the lenses are as much as the sunglasses. Go figure.

It is hot and humid but I went for a walk anyway. Then to the grocery store. Now I am enjoying the AC. Have one more errand then no more outside stuff today.

Yeah, I was at the farmer's market holding hands with my friend's toddlers when I suddenly realized it's a challenge to switch sunglasses with kids! Would seriously consider it this time around, but I'm hoping to keep costs down. We'll see.
