10SNE1? -> RE: Church camp for college students (7/2/2009 5:39:26 AM)

Our 21 year old daughter is working at a church camp this summer as a counselor. Many of the other kids did go there as a camper but our dd did not. However, our family is close friends with the director [;)] Just to give you a heads-up; both because of our friendship with this family and my role working in ministry to kids, I know that camp counselor positions were extremely hard to come by this summer. The economy is taking a huge toll on camps and there are many more college students who need to work for pay right now. If you are serious about being a counselor next summer, I suggest that you get some experience working/volunteering with kids between now and then. Until there is a drastic turn around in the economy, you are going to need some experiences or special skills to set you apart. Many college professors actually spend time in the summer working at camps. Don't underestimate how valuable a good reference can be....see above [8D] Seriously, if they know someone who will vouch for your character, work ethic, and that you are a committed follower of Christ; that can be a huge advantage. Many colleges encourage their students to volunteers in the community. Being a tutor at the local elementary school, mentor to students, Big Brothers/Big Sisters; these are activities that show your commitment to kids.
