Mbee, I haven't had much of a chance lately to chat, so I didn't say anything about you going back to work! So is this for sure? When do you go back? Do you want to go back?

I didn't sleep well last night. Every little noise would wake me up and it's NOT helping that my kids are becoming nocturnal! I'm REALLY tempted to wake them all up and make them keep normal human being hours today!!

We are sort of becoming nocturnal too. All of us are. I don't like it but I get tired and decide to take a nap, then I'm up all night. But if I don't take a nap, it seems like I get a second wind and am up anyway.

DeeDee is going to two camps, which I decided I could afford, then I realized what I didn't factor in, glasses. She has to wear them all the time, and has broken them in basketball. We talked about getting her two pair for the fall (one only for playing ball) and that was ok, now, she will be in camp Sunday to Thursday, with 3 practices on M-T-W, so maybe 10 total. I can see a problem coming in our future. And two pair of glasses for her will run us $300, at least. And, I need to get the appointments in, and find a new eye dr, etc, etc.

Glassed are outrageous. I watched how they make them on some show on discovery channel or something, and it takes no time at all. No reason for frames to cost so much.

Did you have a nice vacation? What all did you do?

Kylie, glad to hear X has healed already! I wish they could get J's headaches taken care of.

No and no.

Is that awful?

I don't have a date, and I have mixed feelings about going. I am tired here just running after the hive, what will I be like with work in there too. I just don't know if I remember how to make it work. But, on the other hand, I need to be around adults. I need to feel productive.

I'm bored here.

Nice fireworks!

We're fully into summer here, now that Nick is out of school and Noah has finished testing. Noah is going to keep doing science all summer, by his choice, and Nick is going to have Daddy's house summer school.

We're planning many trips to the library this summer, to get the boys READING lots! Anyone have some good book suggestions for 9 and 8 year old boys who really don't like reading? Noah is reading at the level he should be (entering 4th grade), but Nick struggles quite a bit. Maybe a late 1st grade level for him? He guesses a LOT when he reads, instead of sounding things out.

Donna - As for the reading for the boys. I would suggest NON-fiction. Find a subject that interests them and then hit the library for books about the subject. If they like motorcycles find books on motorcycles. If it's an animal find something on that animal. Or try comic books. Okay so it's not meaty kid lit, but at least they are reading something. Garfield comics can be quite hilarious! How about kids magazines? Boys that age sometimes get into magazines like Boys Life and Ranger Rick. One thing I do with my kids who are avid readers - and I've done this since they were little - is to never tell them that they can't read or check-out something from the children's department of our library because it was "too easy" for them, or as I heard one parent tell their child, a "baby" book. Picture books aren't just for little kids! My older 3 (10, 11 and 15) still love a good picture book from time to time and it's not like that's all they are reading. For each of the boys tell them that they have to locate a set number of books that they will be required to read during that week. Then you go and locate a set number of books for each of them too. And if it seems to be going good, increase that number the next time you go. Most of all let them SEE you enjoying reading and read TO them. The biggest way to insure that we as parents are raising readers is to make sure the environment and the examples are there. You reading and talking about the books you are reading with them is KEY in developing this love. Just because they CAN read to themselves, doesn't mean that read-aloud time should stop. All of my kids still enjoy being read too! Maybe you could set a goal for them to reach reading-wise. Or make it a friendly competition! Oh little boys love that!

Okay - Garsy steps off her reading/literacy soapbox. For now.

Anyway - My parents are talking like they are planning on coming to my house for about a week starting this weekend sometime. They'll likely be here on Sunday. Not sure yet but one of my nephews may come with them.

Blessings,

Garsy

I don't think my Nathan read a fiction book the entire school year, LOL. He's all about the books on snakes and ocean creatures and other non-fiction stuff. So I second the non-fiction suggestion.

Huh. I guess I don't think as much about non-fiction because I don't read a lot of non-fiction. LOL I think you're right, I'll try to point them that direction a little. Nick would do well reading about animals, and Noah probably about trucks/construction/etc. I would like Noah to read some fiction also, or maybe something I can read aloud to both of them. Noah does have a harder time with comprehension and thinking ahead in a story line.

So how many books do you let your kids get? And do you have a special place to keep them so they don't get lost? We haven't done the library in so long because those things have been an issue. And we have tons of books at home...but I know there is nothing like rummaging through the shelves and finding interesting books. I'm looking forward to going myself too!

We keep R's library books in one spot, in the living room. That usually works. Although I do have a missing book at the moment. She is allowed to check out ten books at a time on her card. A lot of times she does check out that many. My older kids check out less books; whatever I or they think they can read before we'll be going back. They can take the books to their room also.

The Magic Treehouse books have the stories, and also the research guides (non-fiction) to go with them. There are Magic Schoolbus chapter books if your kids are into those sorts of subjects. The Magic Schoolbus picture books might be good for Nick. My son liked Choose Your Own Adventure books starting a couple of years ago.

I do the same thing Kath; I stay up late and take a nap and then can't sleep the next night; or I stay up late anyway.

We went to Colorado for vacation. The first evening we spend with my best friend from high school who lives there. That was a lot of fun! Then Sunday we went to to the Mile High Marketplace fleamarket near Denver. After that we drove to our campground, a state park about 30 minutes north of Denver.

We spent 3 days in Rocky Mountain National Park, and did some hiking. Thursday we drove down to Focus on the Family and Garden of the Gods. We hadn't planned on going down there, but N was asking about going there. I figured we should go to Garden of the Gods since we were already nearby. On the way home we stopped at the Lego shop.

Friday we didn't do too much; we did some shopping. Mostly thrift stores and a flea market. Oh, and Sportsman's Warehouse. Saturday we left our campground; we stopped at the Butterfly Pavillion on the way home. Got home late Saturday night.

Our library has crates that you can check out to contain your library books! I ALWAYS have at least one or two of those sitting on the floor in my office. Each child also has a library bag. They earned these simple bags a couple years through the summer reading program at our library. These they keep in their bedrooms and are used to hold books they take to their bedrooms. Even before the crates were available for checkout, I had a plastic crate that we used to keep the books in. This one happened to have wheels and a handle so it was easy to transport and handle in the library!!

As for the number of books. I started out asking them to pick out at least 3 books each. This was when they were 4 and 5 years old. By the time they were 8 and 9 they were up to 5 to 8 books each, depending on the kid. Now that my kids are 8, 10, 11 and 15, I really don't have to push, because it's become expected and they KNOW before they can do anything else they need to come to me with some books. And they all love to read so I actually have it pretty easy. My 10 year old LOVES comic style books - LOVES them. Now days it isn't unusual for us to leave the library with the following: Zoe - 5 or 6 picture books as well as 5 or 6 chapter books ranging from Berenstain bears to Disney fairy series. Ethan - at least 5 different comics ranging from Garfield to the newer Japanese style comics and at least 5 other chapter books or a couple non-fiction ranging from NasCar racing to the latest bug interest just to "bug" his little sister. Aryn - at least 6 BIG chapter books and she will get through these easily in a week, SO her dad and I find at least 4 more that we think might interest her too. Ty - he'll pick up a couple pretty meaty novels and maybe a few other less meaty things. Right now he has two books he is reading as summer required reading for school and his honors English class. Now days I'm thrilled with going to the library! I don't have to sit and babysit my kids and their choices and I actually get to go and locate stuff for myself!!

Try Geronimo Stilton books for both boys!! These are great little books about a nation of mice characters! Geronimo is the owner of a newspaper and the main character and goes on all kinds of adventures! And they are written is a very creative way that will keep their attention!

Blessings,

Garsy

Go figure. My little ones are all in bed and I can't sleep for some reason. I HATE nights like this. I tried to lay down and sleep, but it's just not coming. GRRRR!

News on the school front - Our old superintendent decided to leave our school and take a position elsewhere. This was announced before school even ended for the year, and quite honestly it made a good many people pretty happy. This man was superb at taking the credit when others should have gotten it and a pro at passing the buck when things went awry. Anyway - so the search began and not in a traditional fashion. According to the schools website the board was not issuing a formal search and were doing things differently - my take is that they didn't have the money to do a big to-do. Well today it was announced that the superintendent of a district in the area was resigning his post immediately with them because he had accepted a position as our superintendent. Now I don't know too much about this guy so I'm going to be making some contacts with parents and teacher friends of mine that have worked under him, starting with my neighbor lady that teaches high school math in that district. He's coming into a mess - so I will cut him a little slack for a little while.

Blessings,

Garsy

I swore I was getting the girl up an hour ago, but hubby was able to sleep in and I kinda liked having him to myself.

She is moving now. Well, at turtle speed, but moving...

I have a coffee story.

I didn't feel well yesterday. Headache, upset tummy, tired and achy, but I was doing better after a nap. We went to camp for 'family night' to see BigBee. Every time we go to camp, we pass the same ice cream stand. Last night, since I was cranky with DeeDee (I made her change shoes because I had a headache and those ones popped when she walked) and whiney with my Sweetie too, I suggested we stop.

Now, it is important to know that I get an upset tummy when I eat ice cream so while I may chose to do so, I ask myself if it is worth the bellyache and last night, it wasn't. So, I ordered a cone, a shake and a coffee. We had a drawn out discussion about the size of the coffee and I ordered a medium, which must have been 32 ounces, after I said that 32 oz was too much. After I paid and they served the ice cream, they STARTED the pot of coffee. It was a slow pot. So I had to wait. I almost left. We were all tired and it was just coffee. But, I had paid as much for it as the milk shake and I didn't like walking away from the $$. So, she poured it, asks if I want cream / sugar and I ask for three sugars and, as an after thought, could she put some ice in it so I can drink it right away.

She brought it over with the lid on it it, sugar beside it, and ice CREAM in it.

So, I waited 15 minutes for an overpriced coffee I couldn't drink, when the only reason I ordered it was because I couldn't eat the ice cream.

I was upset. I couldn't ask for a new one, there wasn't enough coffee left in the pot. I couldn't even pitch it because the only can was right by the window. So I took it home.

And, what left me mad at myself was the fact that the last time we stopped there, I just didn't buy for me. That is fine. I like treating the family. This time, I thought I'd take care of myself too, and well...by the time I got home it was funny. And, I tell my kids to go and complain about their food or shut up and eat it, but I just didn't have the energy left.

Who would put ice cream in their coffee???? Poppa said they are probably asking the same question at the ice cream stand.

I'm over it. Poppa made me coffee when we got home. He even offered to stop at the gas station and buy me one but I won't spend money there unless it is an emergency. WHY? They have a sign on the bathroom door that they are only for paying customers and you must PAY first. We stopped because BigBee had an emergency stop (and he won't use a public bathroom unless it is an emergency) and I wanted a soda and he couldn't go in until after I paid for the drink - standing in line wasn't enough. Which begs the question - if I stop to buy a sandwich, where am I supposed to put it when I go to the bathroom? So, I will only spend money there if I have to, and I didn't HAVE to have a coffee.

Hmm

School is just around the corner it seems. DeeDee's list for camp grew because it was suggested that she have fresh socks for each practice, as well as underpinnings...

Sounds like a fun vacation, Dee.

Donna, my son loved the Matt Christopher books around age 9-10: sports-themed fiction. He also enjoyed the Boxcar Children mysteries and some Hardy Boys. Each of my children get 6-8 books each, and we have a special table where we keep our books at home. My youngest is in the library summer reading program, so she gets taken to the library each Wednesday morning for the program. During the summer program, she usually only gets 3 books per week, sometimes 4.

Garsy, I wish your district the best with its new superintendent. We are looking for a new one, as well, after only two years.

Mbee, I hope you hear something definite soon.

Hope everyone has a great Fourth! (Love the fireworks, Kath.)

It's good, but it's basically the same concept as putting flavored creamer in your coffee......... just cools it off quicker. Basically it makes for lukewarm coffee and we all know what Jesus said about lukewarm.

I like ice cream in my coffee, but they had no right to do that to yours...I think you should call the manager of that place, and tell all that you told us! And maybe ask for a refund.

I'm having a fight with my coffee pot because it keeps giving me lukewarm coffee. If I was supposed to heat it up in the microwave for a minute or so after brewing, you'd think it would've come with it's own microwave! I don't like nuked coffee anymore than I like lukewarm. I would complain to the company about how satanic the coffee is, but it was used when I got it.

Ice cream is great, coffee is great, but there are just some things that don't go together. It's kind of like dipping your Hershey's bar in Ranch dressing ........ just not a good thing.

I don't put cream in my coffee either. Sometimes but not often. I do like flavored coffees though, but I like the bean to be flavored, I don't like the syrup. It has a very bad taste to me.

Nah, each to his own....my mom tells me that I don't really like coffee, I like coffee flavored cream and sugar! Now, THAT probably offends a lot of coffee purists!
