Happy July everyone! What are your plans for this month?

My parents are celebrating their 30th anniversary today...that is amazing to me.

I sent out Noah's testing. Hope we hear back soon. I looked at all his answers and I think he did very well, even with reading comprehension which has been an issue in the past. I really liked testing at home and we will continue to do that, I think. It was nice to do a test here and there until we were done.

We have VBS this month, two actually. The kids will go to my parents' church one week, and then ours the next. During that second week, I'm also going to a BJU hotel meeting to order our curriculum for next year and avoid shipping charges. If we have enough money, I've decided to order the Elementary Spanish DVD curriculum too. I'm so excited about starting "official" school with Hannah in the fall! I don't have to report for her for two more years, so that's nice too.

Brian is set to have another leg surgery July 31st. They're removing one of the screws holding his femur rod, as it is too long and is rubbing on a muscle and making it impossible for him to walk without crutches and lots of pain. Yay...another surgery...we'll get through, and hopefully he'll be walking with a cane once he recovers from that.

Wow, I'm jabbering...hehe...your turn!

Wow! I totally forgot (other than knowing that it is payday for my hubby!)! LOL

Happy July!!

We are heading to VA to visit my sis and her family for the weekend. It will be a short stay, but I am looking forward to it. Her church has a nice fireworks display, too.

I knew it was the first, and I was going to get around to starting a new thread.....in a day or two.......right after the meeting of the procrastinator's club.

Donna--wow... another surgery... Hard to believe it's been almost a year.

We got the kids test results back last week. All scored about as well as we expected. Very well in math, science, etc. Not so well with lang arts. Kinda like boys don't care or something...

Still haven't heard from ds1. Doubt we will at this point. Being a mom, I've been worried. Is he having fun? You know, those sorts of things... DeCycles posts photos and I posted some on my running site. Here's the link. http://www.kickrunners.com/forum//showthread.php?t=53844 . Most are just group shots. The only one of him is with his bike. To see all the photos, go to the deCycles website http://www.decyclesindiana.org/ and scroll down to "journals and photos". We don't have sound on this machine so I haven't heard any of the audio.

Ds4 is having an overnight birthday party tonight. They're planning on camping in the back yard. It's supposed to be 60* and rain...

I need to order curriculum. We will continue with the same math program as she is doing well with it and seems to like it. English we will need a new program but probably won't use it until the middle of the year. I need to add in history, geography and languages.

Still have to organize the school room too.

Ds5 and I will "officially" start kindergarten on Monday. Bible from the NKJV (it's got the largest print), ten "must-read" books and any others from our stash. (We're starting with our stash instead of the library because it's the middle of the summer reading program and you have to take what you can get right now). Math is a combo of a workbook from Sam's and a lot of manipulatives. Phonics flashcards from about.com. A Mother Goose book. Fun songs. Lots of coloring and play-dough. Penmanship will be a combo of techniques, including a MagnaDoodle and a cornmeal box.

Dd2 will be going to the dentist for the first time this month.

Wow ... July ... oh my. Time has passed so quickly. I need to spend part of this month prepping for the new school year. I'm going to be somewhat laid up for a while, so that will be the perfect time. (I'm having gastric bypass on Tuesday, and can't really do anything initially post-op, save for a bit of walking ... no lifting, no driving ...)

How patriotic are we -- today is Canada Day, so we skipped the festivities and went to the US ... lunch with friends at Golden Corral and then shopping at Hobby Lobby, LOL.

We were singing "Oh Canada" this evening. My mother is Canadian. She wasn't doing any better singing it than me and I'm not very good at it.
Happy Canada Day.

We had a lovely day and a half away. Our room was beautiful. The people at that hotel are all nice and helpful. The kids played in the pool for hours and hours. I didn't get much reading done, but I did finish Beowulf and most of the introduction of Venerable Bede's Ecclestiacial History of the English people. Hopefully I'll get to the real book tomorrow. (okay I spelled it wrong, but I have a headache and I'm not going to figure it out and fix it) I don't think my kids have any idea of how blessed they are to get to stay in such a nice place. Normally we could not afford to stay there, but especially not in a two bedroom suite. Dh and I decided that next time we will let the girls sleep in the king sized bed since we want to touch each other when we're sleeping and TL was complaining about MM's legs getting on her side.

Beowulf was really amazing. I had no idea it was such a wonderful story. I loved it. It wasn't scary. It was a little gross in parts, but it was so beautifully described that it was hard to feel too grossed out. I'm serious.

Hopefully Venerable Bede's book will be as good. I'm going to love this British History course.

WARNING: do NOT go rent the animated version of Beowulf.

Now that you've actually read Beowulf, you will weep if you go see the Angelina Jolie animated movie version! The liberties they took with the plot are horrendous! And all just an excuse to show off AJ's naked body in cartoon form. She was supposedly Grendel's mother, who was a hideous witch in the actual story, and Beowulf falls in love with her and sleeps with her in this awful, awful, awful betrayal of literature.

Just so you know...

I love Brit Lit too!

I took a walk with ds this morning. It is so nice to have highs only in the upper 80s!

Thank you for the warning about Beowulf. That sounds ridiculous. I wonder if there are any good movies done of Beowulf. They would probably be pretty gross though.

Glad to know you liked Beowulf. I purchased it at our homeschool convention, but haven't read it yet.

It's COLD here!!! It was in the 50's over night. It's still in the low 60's and threatening to rain now. Ds4 had his birthday sleepover last night. THey slept in a tent in the back yard. And it rained. He wanted to go to the beach today. His buddies were game, so dh took them. 63* and threatening to rain?! Uh, okay???

The GOOD news is this cold weather that has settled here means ideal conditions for my race on Sunday!!! Only 63* at the start, probably only mid 70's at the finish. The water will be warmer than the air.

If they are older movies that relied on suspense instead of special effects, could be good. Now you have me curious.

ETA: nope, not any

I am bummed.

I didn't get a job offer from the place I thought was pretty much a sure thing. Now I'm questioning myself - what went wrong? I thought the interview went pretty well and that I had the experience they were looking for. Melissa gave me a pep talk so I feel better, but I still can't help but wonder why they didn't want to hire me. I sent an email to the recruiter and I'm hoping she'll be willing to tell me honestly what it was they didn't like.

Back to the drawing board. Sigh.

That stinks, Cindy. I'm sorry. Could it be one of those things where they already had someone picked for the job, but interviewed others anyway? A hospital I worked at was always doing that.

Cindy, I'm sorry you didn't get the job. It doesn't mean there is anything wrong with you. Who knows what went on behind the scenes. I hope you get an answer that will be helpful to you.

She told me she had 9 positions open, so I doubt it.

I know it doesn't mean there's anything wrong with me, but it was something of a shock. I really expected to get an offer from them. I'm curious to know what they wanted that I don't have. I hope they'll tell me.

Nine positions?! I'm shocked too. Maybe you are over qualified. I wonder if they hired younger nurses that didn't want as much money.

I'm sorry too Cindy. I too thought it was a sure thing. Cynthia might be right...hired someone for less money. I also wonder if after your interview, positions were cut as they did not have it in the budget? That happened to us when I was a technical recruiter..the company would decide they didn't have the money for that position after all.

Remember too that even the manager told the interviewer to hire you...I doubt it was something you lacked.

My printer can finally print more than 10 pages at a time. Yes! I asked it to print out 33 pages at once the other day..and it actually did it. I even have them all in the right order. It is very refreshing.

I am trying the rapid cycle on my bread machine for the first time ever...hope the challah turns out well.

Ds wanted to see it so we rented it when it first came out. We turned it off and took it back to the store.

Cindy, I'm sorry that you didn't get the job.

Cindy--that is a bummer!!! But, yah, I wonder if it was cheaper to hire a new grad.

My little beagle pup did his very first visit today! Well, he's not a therapy dog yet. He starts classes on Monday. My therapy dog and I visited my favorite facility yesterday. One of the residents made an afghan for me so I went back up today to pay for it. I asked the activities director if it was okay for me to bring Benny. She said sure! We only visited a few residents and Benny did great, although I see where he needs work.

Dh goes back to work on Monday. ANd that's a good thing... He's been off for a month. The down side is that he doesn't think he'll be able to make it to FOT. There most likely is a back log from him being off work. Also, he thinks it's doubtful that he can sit in the car for 8hrs. So I don't know if we'll make it this year.

awww... His. I am sorely tempted to ask if you could come without him like you did at first, but I know that I wouldn't want to travel that far without Russ if I didn't have to. Just know that I really want you to come and you will be sorely missed if you don't, but we understand that sometimes things just don't work out.

Yesterday was busy with Sarah's birthday and I ran off before finishing what I wanted to say. I am sorry that I forgot to say that i am glad that he is back at work. Times have been tough for so many people. I didn't want you to feel stressed about the possibility of not coming especially when the reason is a good thing for your family. There is always next year.

I am so glad that Benny is going to work out with a little training. How is your other dog taking his retirement?

We are in the throws of getting ready for FOT and getting ready for VBS. We now have a lawn in the front yard, and we are trying to finish the floor in the gym. We have some work to do on our septic system cover, and we need to get some more garbage cans with covers. There seems to be an abundance of little critters and we are being careful not to draw them toward the house. One day, there were groundhogs in out gym! We need to do something about our garden as well... the deer are enjoying our garden.

(((((cindy))))) Sorry to hear that they didn't offer you the job.

I always take the sour grapes position when something I thought was a sure thing doesn't come through. Maybe the interpersonal work issues there are a nightmare, even worse than dealing with the phone call people!? So it's actually a good thing you aren't working there?
