Well, the case was about a snake, so I would reflect on that.... I think it is a very bad choice to have a snake as a pet because those animals are not sociable and show no loyalty to their owner. You can feed a snake for 30 years if you miss one time they will go after you with no hesitation. I think snakes of any kind should be studied like they have, for medical/biological/life sciences etc. reasons. They don't make good pets at all. I'm sure God had a good reason to manifest evil as the Serpent. Those parents are irresponsible.

Snakes don't "go after" you for no reason. They can be tamed, but are in no way domesticated. They are driven by instinct. Their eye sight isn't that great. They smell food, they will strike. If you were handling a prey animal, the scent is on your hands, and they will stike. They are not doing it to be mean or to get back at you. They smell food and instinct tells them to strike. Part of having a snake is making sure that they are in a proper enclosure. Proper size, plenty of things to climb on, as well as a hide. Most important is making sure they can't get out! Snakes aren't for eveyone. But please don't say that noone should have one as a pet. We do handle our snake on a regular basis. Sometimes when we have guests over we'll get her out so they can touch her or hold her. It all depends on how the snake is--if she's getting ready to eat (sometimes that can be about a week), if she's just eaten (doesn't like handled then) or if she's about to shed (very poor vision, could strike at anything in front of her)--in those cases noone handles her. But, if the guests are interested, and the snake is good to be handled we'll get her out for a bit, putting her back before she becomes stressed.

This is a tragedy that should have/could have been avoided. This "pet" was bigger than this child, for pete's sake. I can not see myself letting my boyfriend bring this snake into the house around my small child, knowing that pythons smother their prey. Don't care how secure boyfriend thinks the cage is! Not in my house. I pray for all these people.Poor choices equaled the loss of a life here, lives will forever be changed due to this irresponsibility. This is very sad and tragic.

Well, I read an article last night on this situation, and it seems charges are pending for the boyfriend (pet owner). 1. He had not paid the fee for the permit that allows him to own the snake in that state. 2. The snake had already escaped once earlier the same day. 3. Local laws state that if you own the kind of python he has, the cage needs to have a lock on it. This cage did not have one. So, he is going to face a lot of animal related charges and could also face child endangerment, abuse, manslaughter or homicide charges now. Not sure if the mother will be charged (or could be charged) with anything. The adults here did not understand the animal nor it's instincts and they did not take the proper precautions with not locking the cage. This would not have happened if the cage had been locked.

Or somehow double caged. My FIL has several snakes of different types. I'm not a big fan, but they don't really bother me. He keeps them double caged as a general precaution against escapies even though none of his are harmful or big enough to do any harm to anything but a small rodent.

Yes I saw on the news as well that criminal charges are pending. I wonder if anything the police do to him could match the nightmare he is living right now. I know if my baby died I do not think I could survive the grief. I did not notice if he was her father or not though. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,529835,00.html

If you have a dog in your house, you have a deadly animal. My mother back in March was attacked by her house dog she has had for 18 years. For some reason, the dog just freaked out as she walked by it taking the trash out. She had to have 35 stitches in her right leg. The vet just pulled all of it's teeth out. I have worked for the UPS over the holidays for 4 years now. Twice I was jumped by the "classic" dog type: "I have had that dog for 20 years and he has never bit anybody..." Well, guess who the first person was he bit! The problem is that people, for some reason, don't understand that animals are no different than people: they can snap at any moment. Best keep Rover in the yard, unless you wish to pay for his lack of self-control.

The WORST thing you can do is "keep Rover in the yard". Dogs are pack animals. They want to be adopted into our family as a pack member. Isolating them in the yard will lead to behavior problems. The BEST thing you can do is train your dog. That way even if they do get out, they are not a threat to anyone.

You are missing the point altogether; my mother's dog was "trained" and it had a "behavior" problem. I don't care how trained your beloved Fido is...it can snap at any moment for reasons that you may can see or might not be able to ever determine. My point is that you had better keep a close eye on him, especially if he is around people in your house or yard. If your dog decides, for whatever reason, just to go nuts and attack someone like my mother's dog did her, YOU will be paying for it. I mentioned "the yard" because so many places don't have laws governing dogs. Here where I am they just roam free and lie all over the roads becuase someone failed to use a little common sense and now their dogs are dead in the road. My niece last year had two Rottweiler dogs, both females. One was 6 months old, the other was two years old. She tried to keep both in the house, until the youngest one began trying to bite her grandmother all the time. So she put both outside. I told her "you had better get your daddy up here to build a fence to enclose this area on the side of house so they won't be tempted to play in the road.." To which her response was "they would never do that..." Well, six months later, the oldest vanishes one day. I was at the county DOT shop and mentioned it to the foreman that that dog was gone. He told me that if he saw it wandering around, he would try to coax it into a vehicle and return it. Well, my niece finally decides to try to find it. She rides about 2 miles up the road to find it laying on the side of the road. She brings it back, yelling and carrying on when that could have been prevented. For some humor, the youngest was very destructive. My brother had two four-wheelers. The dog would crawl into the seat and gnaw on the wiring harnesses under the steering wheel. She chewed the wiring completely out of both vehicles. My niece would say "you can't prove my dog is doing that..", afraid my brother might say something about her paying for the damage to his vehicles. One night I came in and saw the dog up under the left taillight on her truck, gnawing on the wiring. I took the camcorder and set it up and filmed about 15 minutes of that event. The afternoon she came in yelling "my taillight don't work...someone must have hit it..." I promptly showed her the video, after which she got quit and never mentioned it again. The four-wheelers still sit out here in the carport with wires hanging everywhere.

I would not keep a deadly pet in my home with small children. Of course, I wouldn't have one around with no children, either. Dangerous animals belong outdoors or in a zoo, not in my home.
