http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2009/07/03/palin-to-step-down-not-seeking-re-election/ Plus, Sarah Palin is reportedly leaving her job as governor entirely. Why, remains to be seen. If it's for the purposes of gearing up for a presidential run in 2012, I would consider that to be a pretty extreme strategy as most governors who have run for the White House in recent years have kept their state positions as a fall-back in case their ambitions did not work out.

She will probably run for senator. I dunno, Earth. Based on what I've read, Palin isn't interested in a Senate seat, but obviously she can always change her mind at any time. But if her intent is to drop out for a while and brush up on big issues, we're I advising Palin I think this is the wrong way to go about it, as resigning before the end of her first term as governor makes her look too impulsive. If Palin's goal is truly to run for president in 2012, I'd advise she improve her knowledge of national issues and remain in office as governor at the same time. But of course, Palin doesn't pay me for advice. She's going to do what suits her goals first and foremost.

Yahoo also has a piece just up. It says that there is speculation she might be preparing to make a run for the 2012 Presidential elections. If so, I don't know how I'd feel about it. I don't see her as a good candidate for leading the U.S. as President (nor even the V.P.), despite her accomplishments so far as Gov. of Alaska. I have others in mind I'd put over Palin. She may also be simply retiring to focus on family as well. I am definitely curious. I agree that she's not a great candidate but, whether she'd be a good candidate or not, it doesn't seem to make much sense from a purely strategic standpoint. She loses the spotlight and the leverage that she has as governor, not to mention her ability to build her credentials on the issues - it's awfully hard to mount a run for president if you drop off the radar for a year, and I don't think anyone is ready for the 2012 campaign to start.

With more experience and time and like you said brushing up...well, actually learning in depth (not just brushing up) would be better put ...on our nation's domestic and foreign-policy/global issues would greatly improve her readiness. I found Palin to lack depth of understanding on those issues to the point of almost seeming dumbfounded at times, during both debates and interviews, that I lost a lot of my initial excitement about her over the course of the last '08 U.S. Presidential elections. I wonder if some of that lost intellectual credibility might stain her in future elections (esp. how the media poked fun of her), despite what improvements she may have made to her own credentials, effectively taking some of her competitive advantages out of the picture? It can be hard to recover from some blows. On the other hand, I do admire her as a women who has shown integrity of faith at times when it may have been tough. Choosing to stand up for Christian pro-life rights, when as a women candidate she may have been tempted to gain the support of women's rights constituents, ....and publicly acknowledging her faith as a foundation of how she views many social/domestic concerns. I also was so mad when people said she could have aborted her baby who had downs syndrome (was that the ailment?) when she knew ahead of time she'd be having a "special needs" child....She did the right thing and kept her child. ....There are many things to like about Palin, but the weaknesses she displayed in her grasrp of domestic and foreign policy issues made it apparent (for me, at least) that she was not ready to lead our nation in the highest of offices - as either P/V.P.

I genuinely wonder how Alaskans feel about Palin's move. After all, they elected her to a full term of four years, and barring a personal crisis (IMO) she should follow-thru on that commitment. Leaving in mid-stream does not feel like a wise political move. Also, Palin is discarding an opportunity to keep building her resume by continuing to manage state issues (energy, finance, etc) which could be used as future examples for why voters in the lower 48 should consider her should she seek higher office in '12. quote:

Well said. I truly wonder what she could possibly do outside of elected office that will position her as a more credible candidate or keep her in the public eye for the next 24 months until the presidential campaign cycle starts. CNN just showed a poll from May that provided a snapshot of the current Republican front runners - none of whom are currently holding office - but all of the serious contenders (Huckabee, Romney, Gingrich) have far more credibility and have a fairly well established platform that keeps them in the public eye without having to overtly raise money and run for office for 3 years.

My vote would go to Huckabee for Prez in 2012 if I had my dream choice. I dunno. Huck lost badly to McCain in the primaries. quote:

MSNBC is reporting that internal Palin sources are claiming that Palin is dropping out of politics for good as both a candidate and office-holder - a claim I'm skeptical about. Nevertheless, barring a huge blunder by Obama, I don't see the GOP fielding a strong group of candidates in 2012 - esp if said field includes Gingrich, who has a lot of personal baggage. As for Romney, he never really caught fire in 2008, nor did Huckabee which leaves other names like Bobby Jindal and Eric Cantor to bandy about. quote:

Did anyone else who saw it find Palin's speech extremely confusing besides me? She meandered all over the place.

ORIGINAL: todd_t Sorry, but this is hearsay. I'm not sure if we're on the same page, but to clarify, it was something that was the topic of an entire afternoon's show on Fox radio when I heard it. Basically, Palin had done the test to see if her expecting child would having any defects and it came back positive she knew her child would have downs syndrome and the radio show said there were some who said she should have aborted her baby. But the show said Palin showed courage and morality (probably due to her faith) for still keepig her child knowing it would be a "special needs" kid. I'm not completely sure what you mean by the "hearsay" comment or how it relates to my other comments and the OP. I know I heard this topic on the radio and also at Bible study.

Bizarre. Adding to the strangeness of the move is the timing -- a Friday before a holiday weekend. Not exactly the time to be making news if you want to create a big splash. (Friday is when all the inconvenient news is usually leaked out in hopes that the news cycle has moved on before people are ready to take notice again after the weekend.) If she's doing this for her family's sake, then I can understand, but this is not the action of someone who expects to be taken seriously as a candidate for president in 2012. And if it is a personal political move then I can understand if the Alaskans who supported her feel well and truly gypped by this move. She's going to have to fight hard against accusations that she's running away. I have the suspicion that Palin thinks this is a political masterstroke that will launch her towards winning the Republican nomination in 2012. If so, she is dead wrong about that.

Hmm, back to my comment on fickleness earlier, I recall similar accusations about her having attended and left/transferred to five different colleges during her undergraduate education. That did seem a bit odd...that she didn't stay in one place very long. Hopefully it's not the mark of a bad pattern of fickleness.

Come to the LP, Sarah. The GOP still has their head in the sand. You can say as Reagan did to the Democrats; "I didn't leave the party, the party left me"

This occurred to me also. A governor is elected to perform a job that he/she ran for on the premise of putting in a full four years for one's constituents, and if Palin can't fulfill that commitment why should anyone consider her for president in 2012 if she chooses to run? IMO, barring her leaving office early due to family issues, Palin's decision shows a pretty bold disregard for her responsibilities as governor.

Maybe she's having another child? Or has become disillusioned with politics? Or is burnt out? ....Just throwing out some possibilities to why she's leaving. It does seem surprising.

Not too suprising, she has accomplished in two years her stated goals for the four years, finially proved herself innocent of all the phoney baloney ethics charges; so maybe she is just ready for a new challenge. Thanks RC
