So, my almost 2.5 year old daughter is fascinated by letters. It's not really anything I did, other than I suppose the fact that I read to her at least twice a day and answer when she asks me what her toy letters are (she has a set of capital letters in foam puzzle form and a set in refrigerator magnet form), and she pretty much knows all her capital letters at this point and she's been learning letter sounds along with the names. She's trying to read things using the sounds when she's playing with her books. Can anyone suggest some good books or other resources to teach a 2 year old how to read? I figure as long as she's fascinated it's a great opportunity. I have no intention of pushing her if she loses interest, but I might as well capitalize on it while she has the desire. So, something that will work for fairly short and informal sessions. I especially need something to teach her lowercase letters also. Obviously she lacks the manual dexterity to write right now (though she loves to hit keys on my keyboard while announcing what letter it is). I am leaning toward homeschooling her eventually, but I have no plans for anything "formal" until she's actually of age.

Continue to read to her. Alphabet books would be great. Get some lower case letters. Talk about letter sounds (phonics). Put the letters together into words. If she takes to it, go for it. If she decides it's not fun, then back off. Ds2 taught himself to read in preschool. Ds4 was closer to 6 or 7yo before he learned to read. Both are normal. Well, when it comes to learning to read...

ditto on just continuing to read to her.....don't try to "teach" her any words...but as you read to her...point out the word you are reading with your finger. She will start to recognize words and how they look. Also....go ahead and with her letter cards, start saying things like A says (short a sound) etc. My biggest concern is when kids are TAUGHT to read early.....there is usually a lot of undue stress that they internalize later...BUT...if under loving conditions such as were described above a child learns to read BY THEMSELVES......it turns out differently......

Yeah, I have no desire to push her into anything she doesn't want at this age. I'm mostly concerned with my own ability to point her in the right direction properly... I do not remember much about learning to read myself. I was sort of self-taught but not encouraged or assisted, which I recall being somewhat frustrating just getting "chunks" of words but not the whole sentence out of hymnals due to memory matching as opposed to phonics. I have a weird ability to remember songs and things that rhyme well after hearing them a couple of times (commercial jingles are the bane of my existence), and I had trouble matching what I knew to the "letter chunks" in the hymnal. I can vaguely recall the delight in church one day, when I figured out which word in the hymnal was "Jesus". So, I'm worried about doing something incorrectly that will have to be "fixed" later on. I am starting to suspect that she has a similar capability because she's picking up things like "here is the church, here is the steeple" and "pattycake" and so forth after just a few repetitions, and she "jumps ahead" on her current favorite book, "Green Eggs and Ham", by insisting that I get to the part about the "TRAIN AND RAIN!" in short order.

A lot of children are able to memorize songs and books, especially their favorite ones...it is actually how they jump from a vocab of 8 words at 6 to 12 months to a vocab of over 5,000 words by age 3. (not all children do...but most can and do).....so work with her on that...take her favorite books and read them word by word...showing her the words..... I was "reading" the bisquick box when I was a year old....I had an insatiable need to be read to and an older brother more than willing to read me anything and everything.....I had that box memorized as well as all the cereal boxes, etc. My oldest daughter had some books so memorized that she'd "read" them to her little brother...and would even turn the pages at the right times....maybe she was really reading...maybe not...but because we read to her and let her "read" what she knew to her brother...she still loves reading today...and learning to read was easy for her later. I am glad you are letting her take the lead.....that is the only way to go with reading, especially at her age.

My parents did that and also ran their fingers under the lines of text from left to right as they read. Someone they considered an "expert" recommended that they do this from the time they started to read to me. I don't know if it's a coincidence, but I was reading by four. I remember that the ability to memorize the words to stories definitely helped me, too; I shifted from reciting as my parents read aloud to actually reading the words on the page fairly easily.

My husband was just playing with our daughter on the computer back in '93 when it all clicked for her. He made giant colored fonts in Word, then wrote a few simple words: the bee bit bear cat dog and rearranged them to form new sentences by cutting and pasting. It cracked our little girl up! She was delighted with this new game. The next day she was sounding out words on the advertisement on the table at McDonalds. My point: keep life fun, reading a pleasure and let life unfold on its own timetable. The interest your daughter is already showing is an assurance that she will learn to read when she is ready without formal "lessons". And to all parents of gifted children, I would add this caution: do NOT push your students to the limit of their abilities. Offer age-appropriate classes (call it kindergarten when she's five, first grade when she's six, etc.) and even stick to age-appropriate curriculum but EXPAND on it everywhere the student shows an interest- crafts, field trips, story books, poetry, non-fiction, theatre, movies and anything else you can think of related to the area of interest. Go wild, but I think it would be a mistake to simply push them ahead a grade or two. There comes a time when they will want desperately to be "normal" (whatever that is!) and that is hard to do when you are several grade levels above your peers. It makes an adolescent stick out like a sore thumb, something adolescents (regardless of IQ) do not want to do. Plus what will you do at the other end of things? Send your 15 year old off to college? It's been done before with disastrous results, as they are exposed socially to things they are not developmentally ready to deal with, along with the added curse of envy from older students struggling to make it work. So relax, parents of gifted students (including the OP!) and enjoy your child as a child, no matter where they are academically. Socially and all other ways, they are just their biological age. Let them be who they are.

I haven't read through all the thread, so I'm sure I'm repeating what has already been said. My kids were early readers. When we played games and read stories and they started learning the letters, I always associated a sound with the letter. "That's the letter B--buh buh buh..."etc. If it was a vowel, I attached a long sound and a short sound. We would play with the letters in words, like say their name with all the different letters--Bob, Sob, Gob, Bab, Beb, Bib, etc. (my children are not named Bob BTW). They would laugh themselves silly over this. Anyway, once they knew the letters and the sounds they made, it was natural that they started reading small words on their own. Then we would give them the Bob books to start with, and they loved those. They would slowly read through them out loud to us, sounding out the words. Once they read the Bob books on their own they were sailing. Edit to add one more thing--when my daughter was learning I wrote a book for her with all the letters and example words (demonstrating the different sounds that letters make)--and I drew silly little pictures to go with the words. She read that ad nauseum.

My favorite started books are "bob" books. Costco carries them sometimes or you can find them at all the major bookstores.
