I've been planning on going into dental hygiene for a few years now. I didn't get into the program this year (I had a 3.5 while everyone who got into the program had at least a 3.7). Next year they're adding on a bachelor's program for DH along with the associates. For the past few months I've had several people encourage me to go for my bachelor's and then transfer into a dental program once that's finished.

I've been praying about it, but I'm still not sure yet. My biggest fear is the college loans. It's so much money and my parents aren't able to help me out AT ALL. Unfortunately, I'm only 19 so my parents wages are still taken into consideration for FAFSA. I'm not receiving any aide at all.

Any wisdom or guidance?

God bless!
Sara

Hi! I'm a dentist.

In your situation, here is what I would do:

1- continue on towards getting your bachelor's degree. try to get all A's - to increase your GPA. at the same time, work part time. it is possible.

2- keep on applying to the dental hygiene program (even when not finished with your bachelor's degree (i was accepted into dental school without a bachelor's degree as a bachelor's degree is not a requirement ... it's just necessary to fulfill all the prerequisites).

3- look into becoming a dentist, although i understand some people prefer not to have all the responsibilities of being a dentist. look into the positives and negatives (dental hygiene is usually 2-3 years, while dental school is 4 years ... not too great of a difference if you're already considering getting a bachelor's degree. also look into salaries).

4- maybe look into joining the military ... they have programs where they would pay for your education in exchange for an equal number of years of service with the military ... so that's a guaranteed job in this economy ... but it depends on your personal family situation ... if you're married/planning on getting married/children?

good luck! and ... in my opinion, don't let $ issues hinder your education. and i know what i'm talking about ... i have a $200,000 dental school loan as my parents weren't able to help out at all, and there are no scholarships for dentistry. i would do it again.

Hey,
Here is what I would do,

Here is my little story...

Check the college you are applying for, ask 'bout their students aids. When I took Intra-Oral Dental Assisting course. It was at a private school the course was highly expensive it was one on one pretty much with the student and teacher, it was a class of 19. When I took the course I was worried because the course cost $17,000.00 to enroll in it. I achieved 93% Honor roll student the government took 3/4 of my student fee off my back Now I have a little under $6000.00 to pay off, they took off $11,000.00 since I kept my grade up. See what your college has to offer.

I wish you all the best, will pray for you as well!

((((Much LOVE))))

Thank you both for your replies! It's very encouraging!

I have a hard time stepping out in faith with money. Growing up we were always in debt, and I've been scarred for life whenever the thought of me being in debt comes up.
