1 Peter 2:4-5 (NIV)
As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him— you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

Greetings!!

My name is Brody and I lead a small men's group where our goal in the group is to, as disciples of Jesus Christ, learn more about, and how to be more like Him. We work through a book of the Bible, week-by-week, discussing the word of God and encouraging each other in our individual walk with Christ.

For this week's study I'm asking the question(s) of the group (from 1 Peter 2:5):
(1) what does it mean to be "built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood",
(2) what does Peter mean when he says, "offering spiritual sacrifices"?

I'm interested to hear from the Crosswalk community.

Thanks and God Bless!!

Welcome to the Forums.

Men of old (and I suppose people today too) considered temples and churches as places where God resides.

Actually this is wrong. God resides within you in the form of the Holy Spirit.

Peter is trying to explain this concept to his readers. To be a follower of God one must have God within him (the Holy Spirit) and to live a Godly life, day in day out, sacrificing self for the good of others (like Christ) and not just talk and call Him "Lord, Lord ..."

Difficult? Of course it is.

Welcome Brody.

1. That we are His and he resides within us. We are here to serve Him, dieing to self daily and seeking His will.

Romans 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

2. Praising Him, worshiping Him, seeking to do His will not our own, serving Him, and serving others in His name.

1 Peter 2:1-'Therefore[taking the previous chapter; 1:6-'In this you greatly rejoice even though now for a little while if necessary...', 10-'As to this salvation the prophets who prophesied putting aside all malice and deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander...', 22-'Since you have been in obedience to the truth that purifies your souls...]; 2 [but] like infants eager for the sustenance of a mother’s milk...'] grow in His Word so that you may mature in His discipleship. 3 [For] you have tasted the mercy of the Lord 4 by coming to redemption in Him as a living stone which has been rejected by men but is choice and precious in the sight of God. 5 You also[Since this is the case], as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For this is contained in scripture: "Behold, I lay in Zion a choice stone, a precious corner stone and he who believes in him will not be disappointed." (My paraphrase)

..both personally, as family units, corporately on the local church level and church universally so that we(the church in Christ Jesus' obedience)can impart this teaching to the wider world.

Hello Brody 0313

quote:

"built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood",
I'm not a theologian by any means but I'm glad to give an opinion.

As men, we are to be priests of our household. That is we are to take the leadership in the things of the Lord. Since the Lord desires this of us, He is ready and willing to condition us and to equip us for the task. But our part is to study the word and seek God's guidance.

"offering spiritual sacrifices"
quote:

I guess this is referring to dying to ourselves and serving God whether we feel like it or not. IF we step out in faith, the Lord will empower us to do His will. One such sacrifice I can think of is to praise God whether or not we feel moved to do so or not. Like in corporate worship services, we are to praise God. We are to praise God in all other situations as well, even if it might mean persecution of some degree or the other.
