I'm almost 23 years old and currently trying to find a school that offers a distance learning program. I work a full time job plus run my own photography business on the side so I don't have specific set times that I could go to a college campus since my schedule changes from day to day. With a distance learning program I could squeeze in school during lunch breaks at work and later in the evenings or inbetween photo shoots. Has anyone here taken an online course? What are the benefits and negatives you found with them versus on site schooling? My other concern is that when I bring up distance learning/online to my family they give me the "an online degree doesn't look as good" speech. The two main schools I've been looking into for some time are Liberty and Regent... though I've also considered Columbia Union College.

Hi, I have a degree from University of California at Riverside and another from Whittier Law School. I am currently taking two online courses at UC Irvine and have taken online courses at other colleges. There is a stigma attached to online degrees, however, I would ask your employer (or potential employer) for whom you are obtaining the degree, what they are looking for in higher education. You might consider applying for a degree at a local college that has some online courses/certificate programs, depending upon what your goals are, rather than a full online degree that is not going to further your career or achieve whatever other personal goal you had in mind. One practical consideration is the face to face interaction in the classroom that far exceeds interaction online (in my opinion). Also, interaction online is VERY time consuming without the commensurate increase in knowledge/understanding. Further, some online courses create assignments that are more complex and time consuming than if you had just gone to class on a campus. It seems that some colleges over compensate for the perception that online classes are easy by making them more difficult than necessary.

I used to run and design a Distance Learning Programme here in the UK which included computer based training, as well as inter-active video programmes on discs and online. The advantage of Distance Learning is that you can work at your own pace in your own time. However you must be really dedicated and allot yourself a daily period of time at which you'll devote yourself to learning. You simply can't afford to play truant and give up for a while. Taking it up again becomes usually very difficult. Then there is the stigma amongst some employers that a Distance Learning Qualification is not as good as one obtained at college or university. I can't see why, because in my experience it is more difficult to study distance learning and keep up a job (or two) at the same time. It shows real dedication and I admire such people. We have a distance learning Open University here in the UK and some employers prefer a Degree obtained at a conventional university. So before you start ask yourself how a potential employer would view your qualification. What subject are you intending to study. And whether this will help your employed job - or your self-employed (photography) one. All in all - go for it and good luck. But check what value others will place on your qualification. God bless.
