Could someone tell me if the Swaddle blankets are worth it? I've been tempted to buy one, but don't want to if they work just as good as a regular blanket. I see there are different brands, too. If some of you do think they are worth it, is Walmart brand just as good as any?

I didn't know they made a "swaddle" blanket, I always swaddled using regular receiving blankets.

Me too. Even if they were available when mine were babies, I probably couldn't justify the expense if they cost more then a regular receiving blanket. Of course I had one that loved to be swaddled and three that would scream louder if I swaddled them.

Blessings,

Garsy

Not worth it! My daughter used one with her baby, and it was a pain to wash. Velcro fasteners! It stuck to everything. EEEK! Velcro closures on bibs are also a nightmare! Snaps are better.

I received a few swaddling blankets at my shower and they are all still in the packages The nurses at the hospital taught me how to swaddle my baby in a regular blanket, so I didn't see the need for a special swaddling one. Besides, my son hated to be swaddled from the get-go, so it definitly would have been a waste.

I have never heard of them, but my youngest is almost ten, so they must be a new thing. Receiving blankets work fine, imo. Trying to deal with velcro sounds like a pain in the neck. For one thing, babies grow really fast. If you are dealing with predetermined places to close the blanket. With a regular receiving blanket, you can wrap it exactly how it works for your baby's size at that moment rather than trying to deal with something premade. This is view is based solely on what I have read about them in this thread. I tend to be a minimalist. When my children were very small, we had hardly any room for a bunch of extra stuff. I even got rid of the changing table because it took up too much space.

I'd say wait on it, but if your baby is a swaddle-lover and you begin to get frustrated, trying to get it tight enough when sleep deprived... or if baby seems to get out (but not like being out)... or if baby is getting bigger and the rec. blankets are harder and harder to work with -- then you know where they are... right at Wal mart when you need them.

With each individual baby, you will know better what you need when you meet them -- and babies love those little outings. Don't get caught in too much minimalism and making-do, if you can spend a little extra to make like easier or more pleasant, those early days are the time to do it. You need space and time to breathe... so buy whatever buys you that.

I loved mine that a friend gave me, so much so I went and bought the next size up before she needed just so I had it.

I could NOT get swaddling down in a receiving blanket. Didn't matter how much I tried. I think it helped me to have the swaddle wrap already have shoulder spaces and the velcro to keep it on! She loved it until about 5 months old and we just took her out at that point.

I have packed them away for future use.

I almost bought a couple before Josh was born. Glad I didn't because he hated beings swaddled. Neither Mark or I could ever get the hang of doing it well with a receiving blanket but since our 2 day old could wriggle out of the nurse's "burritos" we didn't feel too bad about not mastering the skill! So personally I would only buy one if I had a baby at home who loved to be swaddled AND I couldn't figure it out. So who knows, you might see me in Walmart next Feb! Slightly OT but what worked really well for us were the baby sleep sacks/zip up blankets. He stayed wrapped up and cozy (we have a cold house) but his arms were free and he could move his legs so he stayed happy too.

I was given one at a baby shower and I only used it when my receiving blankets were dirty. Not worth it, in my opinion.

My daughter loved being swaddled and we swaddled her until she was 9 or 10 months old. Of course she grew out of her receiving blankets but thankfully we had been given three thin flannel blankets that were larger than receiving blankets that worked beautifully! So I would say instead of wasting the money on a swaddle blanket, spend some on some larger flannel blankets (that is, of course, if your baby ends up loving being swaddled like ours did!).

My wife and I have one. When I didn't know how to swaddle, it helped because it even has pictures on how to use it!

Little Jack was a little too thin for it though, so the velco wouldn't line up. So he would break out of it or try, I could hear "rrriippp!"

Now that I know how to swaddle correctly, we just use the regular blankets. The regular blankets really do the trick, and you can get them tighter than the special swaddler blanket since you don't have to line up the velco things.
